G2 invited to DreamHack Austin

G2 Esports are the first team invited to DreamHack Austin, the event's organisers have announced.

The North American event is the first confirmed offline competition for G2's new roster, which was bolstered last month with the signings of Kenny "⁠kennyS⁠" Schrub, Nathan "⁠NBK-⁠" Schmitt and Dan "⁠apEX⁠" Madesclaire from EnVyUs.

DreamHack Austin 2017 will run from April 28 to 30 inside the Austin Convention Center, with eight teams battling it out for the lion's share of a $100,000 prize pool.

This will be the third DreamHack event of the year, following stops in Leipzig and Las Vegas. Eight more events are confirmed for 2017, including the quarter-million Masters championship in Malmö, from August 30 to September 3.

Currently ranked 15th in the world, G2 are struggling at the wrong end of the table in the ESL Pro League, with a 1-6 record. They are through to the quarter-finals of the European SL i-League StarSeries Season 3 qualifier after defeating PRIDE in the first round.

Five more invitees will be revealed by DreamHack in the coming weeks, with the final two spots being determined by qualifiers, which will be announced soon.

In this ecosystem, it's beneficial for all to invite a team like G2, no/bad results or not. They gotta get started someway. And they are probably among one the biggest name on face value that the DH Open circuit can attract at the moment. Who else would you have chosen as a first invite?

Astralis, Virtus.pro, Na`Vi, North, SK. All have proved themselves in some way by at least making the knockout stages of 1 or more tournaments in the last 3 months with their lineups. Maybe FaZe as well since they made the finals of IEM Katowice, not G2 who didn't make past a qualifier. These are all quite big names as well.

Did you read the rest of my post at all? $100,000 tourneys have barely/no interest for those teams/orgs you mention above. Especially not when they need to travel to America for it. Maybe for SK at a stretch but they participate in cs_summit the weekend before.

but again; six invites in total. Might as well get started with the name/team that drives the most interest/exposure :-) IMT is otherwise a good pick and i'd bet my ass that they get an invite. Interestingly these 100k events they've actually won a decent number of.
