DreamHack Open Austin 2017Immortals edge out Heroic
Immortals are the first finalist of DreamHack Austin 2017 after defeating Heroic 2-1 (14-16 on Overpass, 16-6 on Inferno and 16-13 on Cobblestone).
The first map of the series was Overpass, where Immortals got out to a 5-3 start despite losing the second round to an ecoing Heroic side. The Danes decided then to call a timeout to fix their defence, with Jakob "JUGi" Hansen breaking the Brazilians' streak shortly afterwards with an impressive quad kill.
Heroic followed that up with two more rounds, bringing the deficit to a minimum, but Immortals were not going to let a comeback happen and closed out the half with a 9-6 lead.
The second half began with a dominant pistol from Immortals, who lost just one man. But Heroic hit back on a force-buy and then put together a string of rounds, eventually getting out to a 14-12 lead.
Immortals through to the final
With their backs against the wall, Immortals won two rounds in a row to tie up the score, the second of which courtesy of a 1v3 clutch from Lincoln "fnx" Lau to complete an ace. It looked like the Brazilians had finally cracked the code behind Heroic's offence, but the Danes bagged the final rounds of regulation to lock down the map 16-14.
Inferno saw Heroic draw first blood with a solid B retake. The Danish team lost the next round but still held on, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. However, the rest of the half was a one-way street, with Immortals winning ten in a row to build a commanding 11-4 half-time lead.
With a trio of kills from JUGi in a mid push, Heroic picked up their fifth round of the map and kept their hopes alive. But Immortals rallied back immediately after and won five of the next six rounds to win the map, 16-6, and take the series to Cobblestone.
JUGI was on fire throughout the series
The final map began at a frantic pace, with rounds going back and forth as neither team could get a grip on the game. With the score tied at 3-3, Heroic began to string rounds together and brought the scoreline to a 7-3 advantage, with Immortals stepping up late in the half to hit five rounds before switching to the Terrorist side.
The Danish team got off to a flying start to their T half, winning eight of the first nine rounds to jump out to a 13-11 lead. Heroic then tightened up their defence, but their inability to string rounds together really hurt their economy. With plenty of money in the bank, Immortals quickly closed the deal, defeating the Danes 16-13.
