G2 outlast Immortals, top Group D

G2 defeated Immortals following a 2-1 series (Mirage 16-12, Inferno 13-16, Overpass 16-10) to come out on top of Group D.

The last series of day two at DreamHack Masters Malmö began on Mirage, a map G2 had been known to always ban. Starting as Counter-Terrorists, Immortals went up 4-1 to kick things off before a force from the Frenchmen turned the tide and equalized the scoreline.

The Brazilian side grabbed the next two but couldn't keep the pressure up, letting G2 run their simple style. With it, Richard "shox" Papillon's squad clinched four rounds in a row for an 8-6 lead before Kenny "kennyS" Schrub clutched a 1v2 on the B bombsite in the last round.

G2 took Immortals by surprise in their first Mirage match as a team

Another pistol going the way of Immortals made it even at 9-9, but G2 once again got a hold of the first gunrounds thanks to clutches from Dan "apEX" Madesclaire and kennyS on each site. Taking advantage of the economic issues of their opponents, Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt & co. extended their lead to 14-9.

A split on B then set off a streak of three rounds going in favor of the Brazilian side, but the last two rounds saw the French squad pull off two retakes, as G2 got away with the win at 16-12 in their first Mirage match as a team.

Map two, Inferno, started with a chaotic pistol round that ended with apEX clinching four kills and a 1v2 with low health. Immortals then got away with a forcebuy win, which started a flurry of unsuccessful forcebuys for G2, leading to a 5-1 scoreline in favor of Brazil's No.2 team.

The tide turned when Alexandre "bodyy" Pianaro clutched a 1v3 and apEX followed it up with a 1v2 later on, with the chaotic match moving in favor of the French roster. They got up to eight rounds before Lucas "LUCAS1" Teles closed out the half with a quad-kill.

Immortals started the second half with a 5-0 lead despite losing all weapons up against pistols, but the score was soon even at 12 once G2 put up a great defense on both sites. Ricardo "boltz" Prass and Henrique "HEN1" Teles then turned a 2v4 around and Immortals switched up the pace, rushing B after a timeout to catch their opponents off-guard. The next two rounds were split despite a poor economic situation on the G2 side, who couldn't push the match to overtime, as Immortals pushed A for 16-12.

steel played a massive part in Immortals' win on Inferno

The decider was Overpass, which began with the first three rounds going back and forth, as shox clutched a 1v2 in the last second, while each team grabbed a forcebuy. Playing on the Terrorist side, G2 came out on top of that exchange, getting up to 5-1 without losing many players in the process, racking up the economy.

That helped the Frenchmen buy up despite losing the next two rounds and go on a dominant streak until it was 11-3, at which point Lucas "steel" Lopes stepped up with an ace.

boltz's triple in the second pistol round closed the gap to 7-11, but G2 ran away with the next three rounds, much thanks to apEX flanking Immortals and getting a triple to break their economy.

There was life left in steel's team yet, as they avoided match point for three rounds, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback. G2 went on to pick up a 16-10 win on the decider, which sent them to the playoffs from the high seed in Group D.

Hardly matters, does it? Both teams played to what they can atm, IMT didnt burn out lol. G2 was just better. I guess a team can burn out and rely on the decider to bring them further, but that is not what happened yesterday.

The point is the matchup is pointless as it is easily be treated as a training/trial match for strategy experiments. SK lost their match yesterday so everyone believed they are weaker opponent today which is not. Yesterday was just a psychological ops (Troll) for both teams or a 'safe-deposit' match for gambling. If G2 was better than IMT, they would've been in the Major finals in Krakow. And both winning teams knows they were better than their 'opponents' today as they have an upper hand to detect 'their' weaknesses in their 2 previous matches in this tournament. Teams will normally show their true downsides during knockout matches. Well, the term burnout I used isn't fatigue related, it's a thing I relate to their maximum strength/potential in a match/tourney.

You are contradicting yourself. You want to base everything off of the Krakow Major, which is the wrong thing to do - more about that in a moment - and then you use SK as an example. Both SK and North died in the quarters, meaning they should be equal according to what you are saying. And don't backtrack now and change your statement - it's exactly what you are saying. SK wasn't testing anything yesterday, North just showed up, SK didn't. If what you said is true, SK wouldn't have ragequit the way they did on Inferno. And no, it's not "scripted". Only really uneducated people says that, because their brain has no other explanation. G2 probably trained harder for this tournament than IMT did, and it's understandable. Time is running out for that lineup in terms of achievements, so I would too. G2 on paper is way better than Immortals, and that's the first REALLY good result IMT has had in a while at the major. It could be a fluke run easily. See how the rest goes, then come back to continue if IMT reaches the finals again. If not, well there you go. It's not true what you say though, because a lot of teams wants that day off most early playoffs "tickets" will give you, because then they won't be impacted by little sleep and stress as much. Yes, the players gets stressed too. Don't pretend they don't, just because you never played at any level above lowbob level. I can say this by my own experience. Saying the format is bad and rigged is the typical explanation for people that doesn't think things through. Sure, Bo1 elimination matches are questionable, but I enjoy it actually. The Swiss System is getting really tireing, and most pros doesn't like it. So getting back to a somewhat iteration of the GSL format is a start, maybe figuring out a new system. Generally, Bo1 is trash overall. None of that should be a thing in CS:GO in 2017.

Dude, PGL Major is the mother of all CS events. Did you see how big the trophy is? Every team's annual hardwork is ended once the trophy is lifted. That's why many big roster changes (Optic, C9, North) happened after the Major. It's because everyone is preparing the new lineup for the next PGL Major. The playoff for Krakow is like having 4 grand finals in one tournament. How the hell they are equal when there's only one champion in every event? Which part was I back tracking my statements? If it's a winner's match where nobody's gonna get kicked out, why must they unleash all their secrets without experimenting few things before their real knockout match? So you think North gonna make it to semis? Valde was always a top player, but SK achieved making him the worst performing player in his team. So I think SK's only mission was accomplished there, to test how well valde move around his team-mates. The way SK destroyed C9 today is another proof that they were measuring Valde's strength and positioning (acid-test). Well, you might think G2 has improved and so does other teams attending the playoff. Look how hard was for Faze to stop Gambit today when everyone thought Fitchz was the weakest player in the match. That Faze defeat clearly showed CS is not all about how sharp you are, but more about how intelligent you plan out your operation via the IGL. Yes, everyone thinks that G2 will be able to be the best because they own KennyS and other top guns, but top teams like Faze knows now that having top gunners is not the real answer to winning the title. IMT realized this earlier before others, so they got into the PGL finals and become world's #4 top team. And nobody expected that to happen as PENTA looked sharper than them during the PGL main qualifiers. So I still think they were toying around with G2 and their only mission yesterday was to get a 2 digit scoreline. You might think every match is fluke, actually you can depend on fluke shots rather than flickshots before getting shot down by your boss like how shroud was kicked out from c9, for running out of luck. lol If you think i'm a noob, then you're wrong. I'm a top player in my region back in 1.6 and I've some friends attending this Malmo event. But I'd rather keep profile low here as I've quit the game for a long time now to focus on other things in life. But yeah, the organisers we have today are better than 10 years back so imo if the players are stressed out, it's mostly because he's less disciplined/smart to handle his situation and not because of his tight tournament schedule. I always treat CS as a tactical knowledge where your mind just need to know what's best to do during desperate times. I'm not saying these esports teams are a member of a gambling cartel. But it can greatly make the tournament looks more professional when the event is perceived to be immune from any exploitation/manipulation from hidden parties. The swiss system is only good for online qualifiers and not for the finals, as huge amount of money & time is at stake here and most managers for the qualifying teams need more/greater input (info) before making a huge decisions to change their current lineup. I'd agree it's not the best format, hopefully their ADR/KDR can also included in the system if we want to see a greater performance from all players. Well, we can now agree that BO1 format is bullshit. Study have shown that males genes have a slower rate for chemical production in the brain as compared to female genes, which is the reason why men having more trouble waking up in comparison to women. So BO3 format is the best solution if we want to see the fullest potential of a team like VP. hehe.. Cheers m8! :D
