kennyS: "We won Cobblestone because of SmithZz"

For his contributions to G2's victory at DreamHack Masters Malmö, Kenny "kennyS" Schrub was awarded with the HLTV.org MVP medal. Following the award ceremony, we talked to the French sniper about his team's run at the event in Sweden.

An overall great performance from Kenny "kennyS" Schrub peaked in the playoffs and especially the grand final, where he was the main man behind G2's victory over North. Over the course of the tournament, kennyS had a 1.22 rating, earning himself his fourth MVP award of the year.

kennyS had a great performance in Malmö

After giving the MVP medal to kennyS, we talked about the match against North, Edouard "SmithZz" Dubourdeaux's impact and the team in general.

Let's jump straight into it, can you give me a bit of your feelings on this matchup and winning the tournament?

Coming to this matchup we felt confident obviously, because we have been playing really through the whole tournament. So yeah, I think the feeling is that we are really happy, obviously, especially happy about not only the win, but how we played throughout the whole tournament.

Tell me about Cobblestone, it started pretty rough for you, MSL was playing great, they were getting a lot of rounds. How did you manage to come back into that game?

To come back into that game… I think we won that game entirely because of SmithZz. We took a timeout, he made the suggestion, we actually did the suggestion, for two rounds in the row and we won both of them. Then it gave us the chance to have a better game plan. Those two rounds made us win the game, so Cobblestone was entirely because of SmithZz, so thanks to SmithZz.

Can you tell me what he called? What was the adaptation?

He called a three-two B, on plateau and drop. So basically he called it and we did it for two rounds in the row and we won both of them.

In the semi-final you played against NiP, and that was a matchmore or less between you and draken, both playing very well. So tell me about that matchup and playing against him?

It felt really great actually, I really love playing against draken because I feel like I'm playing against myself. I think I might have a bit of an advantage on him because I probably have a little bit more experience. Since he is playing like me—he is almost the same—I could predict a lot of his moves.

But despite the fact that I have probably killed him more than he killed me he actually had a great game. And I'm very happy that an AWP player like him is in NiP. And also I'm kind of proud, because I know he kind of likes me and he is the same player like me, so that makes me kind of happy.

We saw that bodyy has something on his arm, and didn't have such a great tournament statistically. Is there anything going on, any problems there?

I don't know, I feel like we all played well in certain moments, bodyy did as well. But yeah, he has something that bothers him in his wrist, that why he has the thingie there. Basically, he feels some pain sometimes, but I think he is going to fix it. And whatever the statistics are during this event I think that we all played well and did our job.

This tournament has a different coaching ruleset, and as you said SmithZz helped you out. What do you think about these rules and would you like to see them at other tournaments as well?

Well, of course we want more freedom for the coach and as I said we won Cobblestone because of SmithZz. So once again, obviously we want that kind of rules because it works out great for us, SmithZz is really important to us.

Any last words, you won the MVP, you won the tournament, is there anything you want to say?

Thanks to HLTV.org for the award again, I think it might be the fourth this year. I'm really happy again. Also, I'm really proud of my team, my teammates because it was really hard before the break. We have been through a lot of pain, especially at the Major, so I'm happy that we can bring it back. So thanks to them, thanks to G2, thanks to everyone, the staff and stuff.

I was expected some really in depth strat completely exploiting North but it was a 3-2 B... This is why G2 need a good IGL. They would call this in a heartbeat without smithzz and be so good.

You need to calm down about this IGL shit. You don't need an execute every round to win. G2 won plenty of tournaments with shox leading.

And how do you know that? Happy did nothing in all of 2016 with 3/5 players of current G2 and Ex6TenZ didn't really win anything in CS:GO even though he had most of the french star players playing under him.

Are we forgetting Happy in 2015? Plus Ex6 had Maniac and RPK dragging the team down A LOT.

I don't care about 2015, that was 2 years ago. They kicked Maniac for ScreaM and RpK was the 3rd best player for sure.

2016 G2 achieved much more after kicking Ex6TenZ with mostly the same line-up. If Happy's calling is on point why did they go out in last place? nV are decent only because RpK is playing like a monster lately. If he loses motivation like he did in G2, nV is dead.

Can't judge nV from a very close 0-2 bo1 loss. The problem with them right now is Sixer. A better AWP would make them a top 10 team easily.

Of course I watched the finals. To be precise, I watched almost all games. LDLC would've won this tournament with or without him, meaning he had the smallest impact. I am not hating smithzz, I always liked him and think that he got unprecciated from time to time, but this is the truth considering DHW14.

No, it's extremely simple, getting carried all the way to the top doesn't make you a top player. Smithzz isn't bad but as an awper being consistently the lowest rated player of the team is unacceptable.
