FaZe edge out Gambit in St. Petersburg as GuardiaN shines

FaZe have beaten Gambit 2-1 in the second Group A opening match at EPICENTER 2017 (16-19 on Train, 16-9 on Inferno, and 22-20 on Cache).

The best-of-three opening match started on Train where Gambit were on the CT-side in the first half. Rustem "⁠mou⁠" Telepov & Bektiyar "⁠fitch⁠" Bahytov kicked it off with double kills in the pistol round and the Kazakhstani team picked up the anti-eco rounds to have a 3-0 lead.

Finn "⁠karrigan⁠" Andersen secured the first weapon round with a quad kill but Gambit's defense remained strong as they went on to have a 12-3 lead at halftime. Everything was working out well for Gambit until they lost a 4vs2 a round after they won the second half pistol round.

FaZe won their first match

FaZe got seven rounds in a row to trail 13-10 and managed to take the match to overtime despite giving Gambit one map point. Unfortunately for Olof "⁠olofmeister⁠" Kajbjer's team, Gambit closed out the game in overtime to win the first map 19-16.

FaZe had a fiery start on Inferno where they started on the T-side as they won the first five rounds. Even though Gambit responded with two rounds of their own, FaZe were unstoppable and won the half 12-3.

Gambit got their hopes up at the start of the second half, winning the first four rounds, but Håvard "⁠rain⁠" Nygaard's 1vs2 clutch in the fifth round of the half ended that streak (13-7). FaZe won the map 16-9 and took the series to the third map despite Abay "⁠HObbit⁠" Khassenov's best efforts including a 1vs3 clutch.

Gambit couldn't take FaZe down despite winning the first map

Gambit kicked off Cache with a T-side pistol round victory but FaZe won the following round with a force buy (1-1). After FaZe won four more rounds, Gambit answered with mou and Dauren "⁠AdreN⁠" Kystaubayev's double kills (5-2).

karrigan & company reset Gambit's economy by picking up the following round (6-2). HObbit's squad turned it around but still trailed 7-8 at halftime. FaZe won the second half pistol round despite a 3vs5 disadvantage as Ladislav "⁠GuardiaN⁠" Kovács got a triple kill (9-7). karrigan & co. extended their lead to 13-7 before Gambit could respond (13-8).

The last map went to two overtimes

Even though mou clutched a 1vs3 in the following round to make it 13-9, FaZe replied to get their fourteenth round. FaZe got two match points with GuardiaN's triple kill (15-13). Mihail "⁠Dosia⁠" Stolyarov denied the first match point with a quad kill to make it 15-14. Dosia got a triple kill in the thirtieth round to take the last map of the series to overtime.

The game went to a second overtime after each team got three rounds in the first one (18-18). FaZe finished it off with Nikola "⁠NiKo⁠" Kovač's 1vs2 clutch, winning the map 22-20 and series 2-1. They will face SK in the Group A winners' match while Gambit play Virtus.pro for their tournament lives.

Faze had me on the edge of my seat throughout this whole bo3. So many people underrated gambit, even though they are the major champions. Luckily faze was able to close it out. 2 overtimes in the opening match? That's what we would like to see. What an amazing display of entertaining CS:GO

+1 looking at how poor strategically Na'Vi are right now, fitch is much better for them. Without Zeus Gambit started playing better online, taking 2 online qualifiers + finals of ELEAGUE Quals + pretty normal start at ESEA Premier (last one they had only 6 matches won with Zeus). With Zeus Na'Vi started playing bad online, even though they were much better before Zeus. And now they suck both LAN and online.

I feel like fitch will shine in the near future if gambit keeps playing this level of teams. He has shown some glimpses of brilliancy in his entries, but then he looks a bit lost when his job is done (which shows lack of experience at this level of play). But indeed, it would be amazing to see electronic in this team (the other 2 not so much, not because they are bad, but because I remember adren saying they had some issues when things were hard ingame, and those 2 are known for their fiery temperament).

Fitch is like TACO, You can't replace the guy, who always popflashes for you, who always opens you room for awping, who trades you and holds solo b site, who baits himself for you to get kill and win round. if s1mple doesn't replace mou, he as a rifler plays a role, that Adren is playing (who is strategically key player), so he can't get in by not destroying this mechanism. Both flamie and electronic are aggresive players, which mostly openfrag, so if they don't replace hobbit, then they will have 0.9 KD, which is a waste. Replacing hobbit isn't solution. Dosia is igl, pretty good igl. Only ones, that are replaceable are mou and fitch, but fitch must be replaced with someone like markeloff, keshandr, xyp9x (lul). Mou can be replaced by any possible awper, s1? JR? WE? But im sure they won't be doing any reshuffles.

without zeus's authority in that team, it is guaranteed s1mple was toxic as fuck when guardian wasn't hitting his shots with the awp. listening the teamspeak comms when s1mple was in flipsid3 was so fucking hard to listen, and his liquid ex-teammates already pointed out his problematic behaviour. even though he is one of the best players in the world, never ever would i like to have him in my team and play in such environment. guardian seems like a nice guy and will always be remembered as one of the greatest CSGO awpers ever.

Gambit played really well, true world class cs. FaZe were a bit out of form but they managed to pull it off. Gambit proved that they are still a tier 1 team and FaZe proved to us that they won't always just rush through maps and get ez wins.

It depends. SK is not a team of smarts and consistency. They are a team of skill and momentum. If they are on the right day, anything can happen. But I honestly don't feel like they can beat any of the two teams I just saw playing...

Faze is a new team, maybe luck shines on sk to take fazes map pick and then who knows?

One can only hope. I wish that to happen simply to make it easier for them to sign boltz in. Can you imagine a team with cold, fer, fallen and boltz? Insane.

I honestly don't remember the last time SK had any problems against awpers. So I don't think guardian will be a problem. Niko and rain always step up against SK, but they don't scare me. The real issue here is the fact that Faze is very cohesive and organized and SK are 5 guys running in separate directions trying to kill people. That's their main difference.

GOOD SERIES overall, both teams deserved to win. Gambit made some stupid mistakes, Faze did as well.

One of the best CS games in a long time. Insanely close round after round, some awesome play from each player on both teams (as can be seen from. The really even stats). Gambit looked beastly at times, would have loved to see them topple Faze but it wasn't quite meant to be. Every other team will be scared of them now though. Fucking tense final map and amazing to see Guardian playing like a proper monster again!

Most people turned into FaZe fans when they became relevant this year and made it to 4 finals in a row. If you looked at the crowd and twitch chat the majority root for FaZe over Astralis, SK. That means they became fans of the FaZe that still has NiKo rain and Karrigan.. then Olof and Guardian join and they get gained even more fans. FaZe wont make anymore roster changes for a long time now that they are not choking finals and if you saw one of Karrigans interviews Allu was kicked for being toxic and couldn’t practice properly before the major.. Olof and Guardian are not the best players and everyone was calling them washed for the last year and a half LuL why are you making them sound like they bought out Cold and KennyS :D

Guardian is Guardian but he wasn’t playing like this on NaVi for a long time. people also like FaZe cause they unlocked these players after long time of struggling in old teams. They made finals with allu but went 0-3 in major and allu was being toxic in practice right before the Major so what do you expect. tbh the only way I see them doing another change is if they do bad bad at majors and are the main reason for the team to lose but besides that they wont replace you for underperforming for a few tournies. I dont think there will be roster change for a long time...
