G2 qualify after beating Vega Squadron in overtime

It took G2 35 rounds, but the French team finally qualified after defeating Vega Squadron, 19-16, on Overpass.

The first round of Overpass went to the defending team, G2, as Richard "⁠shox⁠" Papillon and Nathan "⁠NBK-⁠" Schmitt got doubles, which Dan "⁠apEX⁠" Madesclaire topped off to eliminate Vega Squadron. G2 then won the anti-ecos, but Vega Squadron won the first gun round after a play in A and two quick frags which opened up the site.

G2 came back the following round, though, and increased their lead to 6-1 after winning two anti-ecos. After an aggressive play by G2 the following gun round, the French side was able to close the round out as Vega Squadron tried to rotate towards B. From there on out, the match went downhill for the Russian side as G2 dominated on the CT side, giving up but the last two rounds of the half for a 12-3 scoreline at the half.

A triple by Leonid "⁠chopper⁠" Vishnyakov kept his team alive in the match, and started to make a match of it by winning the two anti-ecos to go 7-12. Two entries by Dmytro "⁠jR⁠" Chervak, followed by a triple from chopper stopped G2 on their tracks in the first gun round of the second half. Up 12-10, G2 finally got an early round man advantage, but a huge four-kill round by chopper got his team within one, prompting G2 to take a timeout to try and reverse the situation.

G2 is the first team to qualify to the next stage of the Major

After the timeout, G2 finally took a round on the Terrorist side, taking control of A site, planting, and forcing Pavel "⁠hutji⁠" Lashkov to save in a 1vs2. Vega Squadron then reset G2, at 12-13, and won the eco to tie the match up. The French team wasn’t about to let the match slip away, though, and they won the following round in part thanks to a big triple by shox on the A site.

Once again, though, Vega Squadron tied it back up as hutji stopped a great three man push late in the round on B, killing two and stalling until jR could rotate to take the last. With G2 financial trouble, Vega Squadron were able to take the lead for the first time in the match, as well as get on match point, 15-14, with G2 still without a penny. A pistol buy was enough for the French side, however, as three quick frags by apEX and shox with CZ75’s gave them the round and pushed the match in overtime.

In overtime, G2 absolutely dominated Vega Squadron on the Terrorist side, taking all three rounds and putting the Russian team in a bind. Vega Squadron won first round on the attacking side, but G2 finally bagged the match in the 35th round in large part thanks to two big entry frags by Alexandre "⁠bodyy⁠" Pianaro early on.

Vega's CT side is actually impressive, they've litterally introduced a new gamestyle into the meta. However this is quite limited, as we saw in overtime once their opponent has more experience it gets hard for Vega to do anything against any supposedly better team. As a result I'm pretty sure a FaZe - Vega rematch would be in favor of FaZe right now.

Heartbreaking finish. Vega's regular time ct side was phenomenal. Their bait and switch positions were insane. In the end experience won G2's the game as vega started losing sight on how much aggression they could pull(same reason as to why g2 managed to get the 15-15). I hope Vega end up getting a major spot, they surely deserve it

Totally agree, their CT side was a mix of small positionnal/utilitary outplays that sumed one by one led to what we saw. With the skill that comes along it clearly looks like a top tier team (oh wait, they beat FaZe..). The only point I'm afraid of however is that it doesn't look sustainable, teams are rapidly going to get prepared for it (That's what happened in OT when G2 took 3 terro rounds). But still this is definitely one hell of a way to play the CT side. With that they can reach the Legend status imo.

Well, they were dominating VS the same way in first half than VS did on G2 in second half. Vega simply lost their nerves in over-aggression last round. They should've won it, but they didn't, and it's their fault. G2 100% deserved.

They only use their real T side at the end of matchpoint and OT. Plus jR and chopper really stood up. Has a lot good timing and position. Should give them credit instead of saying g2 is bad on their T side i think.

The only mistake of Vega is to continue pushing early after their 14th. I mean, it's their game to push and it was a tough call. But at this level you should consider the possibilitty that opponents will adapt. They're able to make a big upset this event.

Was a very gnarly, back-and-forth game definitely... NBK practically surmounted the victory for G2 here in my opinion, but it sucks that Vega lost out after finally getting to overtime. You can tell the difference between the more experienced teams here and G2 were able to mentally reset at OT, where Vega wasn't. Great game and congratulations G2 for being the first team to achieve 3-0. :)
