RpK unable to play; maLeK to step in at the Major Qualifier

Due to illness, Cédric "RpK" Guipouy will not be able to play for EnVyUs at the ELEAGUE Major 2018 Main Qualifier today, and will be replaced by the team's coach Damien "maLeK" Marcel

During Envy' match on the third day of the ELEAGUE Major 2018 Main Qualifier against Flash, the French veteran player Cédric "⁠RpK⁠" Guipouy looked unwell, with his poor health status later on confirmed by Adil "⁠ScreaM⁠" Benrlitom in our interview who stated that RpK "can't even walk".

The 28-year-old was visibly struggling during EnVyUs' match yesterday

Today it has been announced that, due to medical issues, RpK isn't fit to play, and will be replaced in the active roster by the team's coach Damien "⁠maLeK⁠" Marcel. The 31-year-old has never played a full professional CS:GO match, with his only record coming from standing in for a couple of rounds in an online game against FaZe.

Envy are currently 1-2 in the Swiss stage, one defeat away from elimination. They are scheduled to play for their tournament life at 22:15 .

According to the rulebook for the ELEAGUE Major 2018, even if RpK recovers from his medical issues and Envy advance to the next stage of the competition, he would not be able to return to the active roster, as any change is considered a "one-time permanent adjustment":

"Following the start of their first match in a tournament (starting with the Minor Championships or any round after), no roster lineup changes will be permitted for a team, except that a team may make a one-time permanent adjustment to their roster of switching the role of the person initially identified as a coach and one player. For the remainder of the tournament, the coach will be considered a player, and vice versa."

This means that, for the rest of the ELEAGUE Major 2018 Main Qualifier, Envy are considered to have the following roster:

Why is it not a thing yet that teams field 5 players + 1 substitute that is ready at any time? I'm sure there are players who would do that. Even if the player is way worse than a pro, if he knows the strats etc. and can fill in perfectly it definitely would work better than a coach or whatever..way too many times teams have to use a weird standin..

because there's not enough money in the scene to pay players to only sit on the bench. and any decent player wants to play on a starting roster, not backup. i fully agree with your sentiment. ideally you'd have 1 substitute for every position and field a 10 man roster at every event, but orgs can't justify the costs at the moment. so we end up with emergency-fall-back-players instead of real substitutes.

Even if this would be an issue, it's still not allowed. See the major rules. Even if rpk recovers quickly he wont be allowed to play again because only 1 change can be made. And teams can only lock in their 6 man roster, consisting of 5 players and a coach. Nothing more.

These rules are completely bogus. This major is becoming very frustrating to watch. First tyloo (best chinese) and 100t (even though I don't like them) can't compete due to visa. Then sk and liquid have to play with stand ins (most players voiced their annoyance about it) and if a player gets sick it cant go back to the team??? Even if the guy is only sick for one game? There needs to be realistic expectations for the players, when you only host 2 tournaments a year. Honestly Valve is terrible about getting feedback from the community and pro players, which is evidenced by situations like that.
