AdreN: "Our aggressive style against SK's is going to be some beautiful CS"

Our last interview from day three at the ELEAGUE Major is with Dauren "AdreN" Kystaubayev, who gave us his thoughts on several topics, including their loss to Quantum Bellator Fire and the narrow win over Space Soldiers, as well as AVANGAR's performance at the qualifier.

Gambit are now sitting at 2-1 in the Swiss group stage following a win over Space Soldiers earlier today after a near-perfect CT side on Train, even though it took them most of the second half to finish things off at 16-13.

AdreN is looking forward to the SK matchup

After the match we caught up with Dauren "AdreN" Kystaubayev to ask him about the team's earlier loss to Quantum Bellator Fire and the Space Soldiers match, and to get his thoughts on Gambit's next matchup, SK.

In your second match here you ended up losing to Quantum Bellator Fire in overtime on Inferno, did you expect it to get so complicated?

Yeah, we expected that they were going to play out of their minds. They feel confident playing against CIS teams and we knew that. We knew that everything might not go our way, if they play crazy, like a nothing-to-lose game, so that was pretty much that game we expected to see from them. And it went well for them, but wrong for us. We expected that game, but we didn't know we were going to lose like that.

Towards the end of regulation it even looked like you weren't going to make it to overtime, can you tell me about the end of Inferno?

In the beginning of the T side, we had some crucial rounds that we could have gotten and we just noticed that we can't win any clutch situation, we lost every clutch situation. We wanted to improve our T side during the game and it didn't go well.

Playing on the CT side, we just played our regular gamestyle that we're used to playing all the time, but suddenly we just noticed that when we're trying to do something, they are getting the rounds. When we go passive, they can't do anything. So it worked until some of the guys just called "okay, right now I want to peek" and everything went wrong after that. I think that was one of the main things that we lost the CT side in the overtime, that we decided to do something instead of playing passive, that was the wrong decision.

The first half against Space Soldiers went pretty much perfectly for you with 13 rounds, but it took you almost the entire T side to close things out, what made it so hard?

The main thing on the T side was the gameplan. We knew how they were going to play on the CT side, but we didn't actually know how we can counter it. We had some strats against that kind of a defense, but everything went wrong, they knew what we were going to do.

It was kind of hard, they played really well on the CT side, but thanks to Dosia for taking the round for us, that was a crucial clutch round, after that round we gained more confidence. We just knew that a simple round was going to beat their defense and we just found our simplest tactic to win and it worked.

What are your thoughts on the next matchup, SK?

We always want to play against SK, it's always an interesting matchup, for us especially, because our aggressive against their aggressive style is going to be some beautiful Counter-Strike. We're going to prepare a little bit, but we'll try to play our game, not to focus on their game and we'll see what will happen.

Well, preparing for them might not be very easy anyway, considering they have a stand-in...

Preparing for their game... they're playing a free style, they always find out how to play against you, so we're going to play against them (laughs). There are going to be some mind games, aggressive mind games.

The CIS teams have done well here and at the qualifier, the closest to your heart are AVANGAR of course, what did you think about them and the performance they showed at the qualifier?

We're really happy about AVANGAR. They played five games, they went 2-3, but they had a chance to qualify for the Major. This is good stuff for them, they gained a lot of experience, they're young players, like 17-18 years old, and everything is in their future, everything is in their hands. They can do a lot of stuff, I know that. I hope they're going to improve and not going like star players, they have to improve and be better, and I believe in that.

why does everyone keep calling felps a stand-in... 1- they played all year with him (second half online only) and won more events than any other team, and most of their events in 2017 (5) 2- isn't boltz technically the stand in? Just sounds like a pre-made excuse "oh they have a stand-in", as if they're playing with dead or something.

It's been four months since they played with him, they've changed plenty since and clearly don't want to give in to his playstyle as much for this one occasion. Yes, it's not the usual situation since they know him well, but that doesn't make him any less of a stand-in.

Right, I get that - although they could always go back to their July strats, it's not like those strats didn't win tournaments. But my query was more to do with whether he was the actual official SK player and if Boltz was technically the stand-in for those 3 months, but I guess not. Is it done with felps officially after this then?

Felps was confirmed to leave the team 4 months ago. FalleN vlogged right after that it wouldn't be the last time Felps played for sk because there were tournaments with roster locks (this one), but after the major he'd leave for good.

Felps was not training seriously in Brazil, he spent months without even wanting to play CS, with Boltz SK changed the style of play and became a passive and strategic team, and won practically all this ... With Felps SK tries to keep a passive team, but it's difficult, Felps did not practice and does not have that style in essence and that's why SK is having many difficulties in theoretically easy rounds like ecos They trained only two days before the Major, they just want to maintain the status of legends

It was their fault to just practice 2 days with felps. It's not like Valve told them they couldn't use boltz 3 days before the Major

Honestly, felps is their "full-time player", and afaik they just rescued boltz from dying immortals, aswell as zews helped to steel . so there is no excuse for SK. "We've been practicing with felps for 2 days" isn't that their fault that they've practiced with felps for two days when it was known like 2 months before the major.

SK is worried about the rest of the season and the focus of the first half is Wesg 2017. Cold and Fer have made this clear many times, they do not care about this Major, they do not care about a championship organized by Eleague, they want just be legends and re-practice with Boltz

Being a professional CS player and not caring about a major is a bit of a spit in the face to the fans... Nobody watches WESG in comparison to the major. I understand the prize pool allure, but I don't think that should be their attitude. Again, your description of the situation and the calling of felps a stand-in comes off as a pre-determined excuse if they don't do well in the Major, and a weird attempt to protect their legacy. "Aaaahhh we didn't really care anyway, we just had felps and WESG > major, we're still T1 if we want to be".

They do not care much about Eleague championships for the ridiculous rules created at each different championship, they said that the goal was to be legend for the simple reason of being very, very hard to win a major training only two days with a standin ... E other, Felps was not training seriously in Brazil, the only thing he did was lives playing against horrible players ... SK does not mind letting a major pass, they will continue training with Boltz as they did up to 5 days ago and they saw with maximum strength for the next one (unless the Eleague or who is to organize the next one, end up changing some rule again)... They explained everything very well and the delay of Eleague to send the rules (if they send before, probably they would buy Boltz before the qualifer) and we who we are fans we understand perfectly ... Let me cheer, but we know that it is very difficult and the title is already in the hand of FaZe practically ... The Guardian himself said that Eleague spoiled the show

Excuse? No, boltz is not the standin lol. There's a lot of reasons why felps is a standin, not the usual standin I know, but you don't seem to understand how a professional top team works. So let me enlight you: 1 - felps left SK 3 months ago 2 - they were looking pretty sloppy on his last days, losing to ghost and splyce 3 - SK obviously changed a lot with boltz joining them, which made them improve a lot 4 - felps came to brazil without any desire/motivation to play CS, he was having these issues before he left SK. Barely played casually, in 3 months that changes your game a lot. Also he was pretty much obligated to play this major. Not only he doesn't come with the motivation he should for a major, fer and cold stated this affected the whole team, which is completely understandable, and they were not focusing the major as they should 5 - Teams create a lot of new things for a major, so it's not like "oh let's just play like we did with felps, we know him, he knows how we play and it will work". Especially considering they were looking so bad on his last days, losing to ghost and splyce, like I said 6 - They had to change a few things considering they lost boltz for this major. It's pretty hard to tell which changes would make them better or worse, for reasons I've already mentioned. They had 2 or 3 days to practice with felps. Other strong teams like FaZe, Mouz, Gambit and G2 had much more. They would either put felps on boltz' position, which is hard because felps is much more of an agressive player, while having to teach him what boltz was doing exactly, put someone else on boltz' position or create something new. And they had 2 or 3 days to test whatever they decided on each strat for each map I could still speak a lot more but this should be more than enough already
