RUSH: "My ultimate goal was Legends status, but I think we can get top four"

We had a quick chat with Will "RUSH" Wierzba after Cloud9 advanced to the playoffs at the ELEAGUE Major with a win over Vega Squadron in the last round of the Swiss group stage.

Cloud9 began their journey at the ELEAGUE Major with two losses in a row, but with their backs against the wall, the Americans came back from behind to advance to the playoffs following three comfortable matches, eliminating Virtus.pro, Astralis, and Vega Squadron.

RUSH talks Cloud9's journey from 0-2 to 3-2

After their last match, we sat down with William "RUSH" Wierzba and asked him about how the team managed to reset following the early losses. He also went over what Cloud9 will do over the next three days and the team's goals for the playoffs in Boston.

The interview took place before ELEAGUE drew the quarter-final matchups.

You started out 0-2 here and managed to come back with three quick wins, how were you able to reset and keep the pressure away?

Well, the first match versus G2, I think Tim said in the previous interview that we probably did too much prep work and that kind of bit us in the ass. We were expecting them to play differently and they actually countered us and they did well, for example we went A a lot and they were playing truck for retake, which is a good setup versus what we were doing. So they obviously did their homework and they played super well, NBK was playing super well.

And then Space Soldiers, I think that was a lot closer, I think we should have won, because there were a lot of clutches that we lost and people weren't on individually. We lost two antiecos as well, so that compounded into a game that we probably should have won, but credit to Space Soldiers, they played their hearts out and they'll probably make it through, if they beat mousesports.

From then on, we knew that we were still at our peak individually, so we just played our own game from then on, versus VP, Astralis, and Vega Squadron. We didn't necessarily do a ton of homework, we did like minimal homework on what their basic setups where, but we focused more on ourselves overall to make sure we didn't get in our own heads.

You now have a couple of days off, is there anything that you'll focus on specifically, or is it just going to be practice as usual and ironing out mistakes?

We'll practice if we can, if we have time, for sure, scrimming is always very important. But I think like I said before, focusing on our own game is important, maybe adding new strats, because we may have a little bit of time while we're in Boston. But if we find out who we play, obviously we'll also do some homework on them, if we have time.

A big story of your run was Skadoodle finally breaking his streak at Majors, did you get a reaction out of him, at least a smile?

Well, I could tell throughout this entire Major, even the Challengers stage and this stage, that he was really a different player and person, he was into every game, after every kill he was cheering, he was hitting so many shots, he was a completely different player than he normally is. I'm really happy to see that come out of him and after we won I could see like pure joy on his face, I'm really happy more than anything that we did this for him.

Going into the playoffs, what are you aiming for here? Previously you mentioned Legends status being a big goal, how has that changed?

My ultimate goal was to get Legends status, but I think that we can get top four. I don't think it matters who we play, honestly, obviously FaZe and SK are super good, but I still think that our map pool will allow us to have a good game versus them. For me, I think we can get top four, but obviously we could still win it as well, you never know.

T2 event. Every good team went to IEM Oakland, which was like 2 days later. The only reason G2 was there was because they didn't qualify. And that's not the G2 with kenny, apex, and NBK...that's the one with SmithzZz and ScreaM where shox was the only remotely consistent player just so we're clear.

Nothing, but you can't go to playoffs with that thought, they need to believe in themselves, they have to come up with a thought that they can win, I know, it's hard, but not impossible

Yeah, same as a year ago. I don't think they will just drop dead, I'm sure they will do their best to win and they can win for sure, but they should know the chances are slim, especially if G2 don't fail vs C9, since G2 are the only team which has been able to consistently beat SK.

humility is another thing people sometimes need. thats why fnatics downfall was so great. some of these guys won pro league on brazil against sk with that mindset. rush and tarik won eleague with optic against astralis with the same mindset as well.(;apart from when they played faze they dissed them a lot) fallen was the same when they were keyd. after that quarter final against vp they realized how good they were and started grinding it. humility is good. fuck old fnatic and faze and cocky attitudes.

Weak comment. Some may say realistic but screw that. If C9 doesn't think they can win then most likely they won't. It means they don't have the heart to fight for it. Anything can happen. Why make a stupid comment like "I think we can get top 4". No champion ever became so by thinking they were 2nd, 3rd, or 4th best. There are so many examples in competitive history where teams or people who were never supposed to win did so. What is this weak-good-enough-limp-wristed-attitude this generation coming up now has. It disgusts me! Lost some of the respect I had for RUSH.

Still, he shouldn't say that publicly. He should say he thinks they can win and there goal is to win. People might laugh and say you have no chance but the fact is they do have a chance. No respected coach of any team or person would ever tolerate their players saying 2nd best is ok. It's just not an attitude that produces champions and it shows weakness. I'm sure C9 will in their mind try their best but it's a psychological thing that happens when you've already conceded that 2nd, 3rd, or 4th is good enough. They will claim to have done their best but deep down it's not true. I could write a book on what I'm talking about but HLTV isn't the place for it. Just go read the book of any champion or watch interviews etc. and they will all say that one of the number things all champions have in common is the belief and determination to be so. Like I said, there are many examples of people being massive underdogs but still finding a way to win despite the odds and common sense of what should have happened.

It's REALLY risky to put yourself in the spotlight like that. Honestly, if you go into university thinking you have to be the smartest person there, you''re gonna attract a lot of unwanted pressure. There really is no right answer. It's good to be ambitious, but you also got to set a bar so you don't go too hard on yourself and start beating yourself up really badly. They all want to win it really badly, but I think this really relates to the 1st point they made about doing too much homework. They just get too focused and might end up "choking," which happens often with that mindset. Additionally, there are plenty of books that contradict that point, (I believe Rose Namajuanas, before she destroyed JJ, said she has hopes of beating her but was never too vocal about it). Actually, many books have people believing they can become the best once they are actually in the process of being the best. It's not something you should think about when you are nowhere close. Which is why he says they CAN win it all..(League example, bear with me, but TSM vs C9 at Worlds).

I agree with some of what you said except your using university as an example. School isn't a competition and anyone looking at it as so is making a mistake. As far as books being written that contradict others -- well, of course. But it's about choosing the opinion and attitude that best fits the occasion and what will produce the best results. I can argue on all sides of any issue I'm knowledgeable about but it doesn't mean all the perspectives are equally true. Truth is singular since if truth weren't singular it would prove truth doesn't exist -- since truth can't contradict itself. But, that's opening a broad topic which would need many hours to even begin to do any justice to.

A lot of students these days see school as competition for the same exact reason though: winner's mentality. Also your notion on truth; that topic you're talking about will never really lead to an answer. A lot of philosophy profs will say that the truth is also hidden beneath a lot of lies. Truth is singular, and some sources hold more truth than others, but truth is also spread out, and shaped by perspective all the time, making it less objective and more subjective. Point is, there really isn't an answer.
2018-01-23 05:48

No one can argue against the reality that truth must be singular if truth is to exist at all. OF course, people can claim truth doesn't exist, that it's hidden in mystical ways, and so on. But I am not talking about its source, or its conclusion, but I'm talking about its nature. Reality teaches us truth exists -- it's extremely easy to prove this; and common sense teaches us that truth is singular (there can't be opposing truths). Anyone arguing against this either doesn't understand the subject, or is trying to create confusion.

Media answers =/= real thoughts.... This is all media training bro, they are told what they can and can't say. I have no doubts that C9 believe that they can win the tournament... there is no reason for them to put any added pressure on themselves if it's not needed. Plus you don't want to say to media; I think we are going to win, then you bomb out pretty badly, it looks poor in public. Pretty sure that C9 have mental coaches as well so they should be in a good frame of mind to win games. Just comes down to who is better on the day.

We're in an era where teams realize they can't win so at least want to secure next major and sticker money*** Faze and SK, and now seemingly g2 are the only real title contenders now, everyone else is clearly a level below. Even if you can beat them in an odd bo1 or a very close series like mouz put up against faze, there's no real hope of winning a tournament, especially with all three of them still in it. Not saying it can't happen, but they chances are way too low to actually reasonably believe it.

What do you mean they realize they can't win? C9 can beat any team at this event but they just don't care, they dont care about winning, the only thing they care about is sticker money. If Gambit can win a major literally any team can.

G2 #4 ranked team in the world who blew away everything in their path at this major so far. Can easily be considered a top team in form, but maybe too hard to comprehend for you. If you need a more detailed explanation do tell, but I doubt it will make a difference. You are geographically impaired.

"My ultimate goal was to get Legends status, but I think that we can get top four." What an idiot. C9 playing like utter dog shit and now he says that they only lost against G2 because G2 did their homework. Whats that kind of an excuse? You guys didn't lost because G2 did prep, you guys lost because you are shitty and turok is only one whos hitting his shots.

I didn't say he wasn't playing well, nor did I say that he couldn't bottom frag. But you're implying that the rest of the team hasn't show up, which is demonstrably false. I apologize if you can't follow the conversation, I'll slow down for you if necessary.

"But you're implying that the rest of the team hasn't show up" In that G2 match they actually didn't showed up, only Turok and thats not because they had a bad day, they lost because G2 is just too strong and in those moments turok gives up his responsibilities and plays an lurking/entry fragging role and he fucked G2. The rest couldnt do any shit and it will be the same in that BO3

You used present tense, which implied you were talking about their entire body of work, not one match. That's the fault of your communication. I don't get why picking one game in particular makes more sense anyway. Shoddy logic at best. And again, I'm not saying Tarik is playing poorly or something. I'm saying you're being disingenuous about Cloud9's performance this tournament, implying that no other player has played well and picked one game to show it. Keep calling me names though, really shows your intellectual prowess. Juvenile, quite frankly.

And another thing, "Nice job picking those cherries, but there's the rest of the orchard too." The G2 match isn't cherry picking you degenerated idiot, it was a tough game and tarik showed up. Its fucking biased to use convincingly won matches by C9 (where the opponent team doesnt even win 7 round) to show that Tarik contributed nothing or to show his bad stats. If you would have an idea, you would know that in games where your team is recking the opponent team, that there are always players who dont show up just because they know its easy to win and there is no need to try hard so they play lean back and give their teammates the possibilty to show up - Tarik did that in those easy matches so you are implying, that the rest of the team showed up and tarik not, by showing easy convincingly matches that they won against lower teams. Bravo. You are a real NA guy, of course knowing shit about the real game, no wonder your region is so shitty. Here another rational Match analysis: Very tough match against EnvyUs hltv.org/matches/2318529/cloud9-vs-envyu.. Tarik is top fragging, whats with the other guys? Ez match against shit german team, Tarik is 2nd best hltv.org/matches/2318542/sprout-vs-cloud.. Pretty good match, C9 outplayed the better mouz Tarik again topfragger hltv.org/matches/2318552/mousesports-vs-.. Next match is G2, tarik topfragger again, the rest let tarik down. hltv.org/matches/2318597/cloud9-vs-g2-el.. Very tough match, they lost, tarik again topfragger and again nobody showed up hltv.org/matches/2318601/space-soldiers-.. And NOW YOU ARE TAKING 2 MATCHES AGAINST EASY OPPONENTS (ASTRALIS OBVIOUSLY NOT GOOD ANYMORE) AND ACCUSING ME OF "PICKING CHERRIES" HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH Fucking idiot, you C9 Team is shit, without tarik they would be out of the tournament in challenger stage already but its ok to be an idiot an to think that everybody of your fav team is contributing something and discredit the best player by that.

I don't get this argument of me discrediting Tarik. I am only saying he isn't the end all like you are. It's very likely the team gets knocked out if the other players are "replacement level" as well. Your reasoning isn't sensible here. You're arguing against an argument I never even made.
