suNny: "We are just creating things on the fly"

Miikka "suNny" Kemppi discussed mousesports' Mirage and the semi-final match against Liquid in our post-match interview.

MOUZ continue their run at StarSeries i-League S4 in Kiev, Ukraine, by securing another revenge win. In three maps, the Europeans took down Liquid who defeated them earlier in the tournament, in the group stage.

Using different variations and abusing certain players was key to the win on Mirage vs. Liquid

This series started with two one-sided maps, Mirage went the way of MOUZ, Cobblestone went the way of Liquid, setting up us for a final brawl on Train. There, Chris "chrisJ" de Jong's team was able to seal the deal in the second half with a solid Terrorist side.

On the first map, Mirage, you hit A a lot, I think there were three rounds in a row where you did A explosions fast, with some different details. Was that something you had in mind coming into the match or was is it an on the fly thing you figured out could be working?

It wasn't a game plan coming in, I mean, we are so confident on Mirage, on both sides, that we just start playing and even though it seems that we are playing the same stuff, we are still mixing it up really well. For example, in these A hits, we faked middle in different ways, sometimes we smoked window and short, sometimes only top mid and sometimes only window, it's just the macro things that matter. And on Mirage we are all really comfortable with our aim, the map just feels good for all of our players.

Also, the good part is that now other teams know that I feel comfortable on Mirage, at least I think so and at least it felt like Liquid knew I flank middle really often when we do A hits. So I started the side with a heavy flank from B, killing three guys, so their retakes were really slow after that. Then for two rounds I stayed with the rest of the team. I think we won one afterplant, when it was 5v5, I saved one flash and when they started to retake I just popflashed my guys out A. With my flash, my teammates got three kills in one second.

So we are not preparing much for specific opponents, we are just creating things on the fly. Also, if our opponent is not feeling good, for example, last time that we played against Liquid, we countered EliGE really well, like in ladder room, connector, window, we just always killed him, so we kept playing our default [and abusing him]. But now we killed Twistzz every time we went A and he didn't feel comfortable, so we just abused that. And we know we have so good clutchers in our team that if we get the bomb down, in any site, we will win the round. So it wasn't anti-stratting or a game-plan coming in, we just played good there.

Touching on Cobblestone, it obviously didn't work out for you, how did they run up with that big of a lead that fast?

I don't know, now it's obviously easy to say it, but I'm pretty sure that if we played the map again it would be a different story. After Mirage we felt really confident and we tried to win the rounds too much, we played slow rounds only twice and they got entry kills in both of those rounds. So it's really easy for them to read that, if you just fail four rounds going fast to B, then you are going to play slow next round. It felt that we played into their pocket, so to speak. But they played really well and they had good reads, that is pretty much it.

After losing that big, is there anyone in your team that need s to rally the troops, or are you a team that doesn't get affected by stuff like that?

I mean, when we were down 10-0, the TeamSpeak atmosphere was pretty stressed and we started to question ourselves, like "WTF are we doing?", but me, Robin, Tommy and also Martin, we are really calm guys, so when stuff like this happens we just tell the rest of the guys that everything is ok, that we need to keep playing, take a few rounds and we can make the comeback even from 0-15. Some of us were stressing there, but I think we are all pretty good at resetting our minds.

On Train, it started with you having good retakes on B, I think it was 7-0, and after that you rolled out the double AWP and it seemed like that might've been more detrimental to you than positive. If that wasn't the issue, what do you think was the issue on the second part of the CT side?

I mean, nitr0 won a 1v4 with only a CZ and he won a 2v4 with someone also, on a B retake. I also lost a 1v1 against him because I didn't have a kit, even though I had money, that was basically the super-old fifflaren choke and that's on me.

I don't think that the double AWP affected us [negatively], it was just small issues and miscommunication. Also, being overconfident in some clutches, if you are up 8-0 and you have a 4v1 you don't play it as focused as if you would if you were down 0-8. So that's the easy one, we will probably never lose that kind of a round again.

Sometimes we see oskar saving money in his bank even though he could afford a drop, while someone plays with a pistol or an mp7. And so far oskar has a lot of AWP kills, more than any other player here. So is that something you do on purpose, to have oskar like a bank so he can always buy an AWP? Is there any special thought in that regard?

It depends a lot on which map and which side we are playing, but yeah, even though it doesn't always seem like that, but we have a really deep playbook on every map, we have 20 different moves, 20 different strats. People might not think so because we win rounds just by running and killing people.

But, for example, if he has money for an AWP and we have even just two CZ's, we can jump corners for him and we can create a plan for the round later. For example, we can be trying to get entries from three different places but we still have a plan for later on, since (laughs) we know that if we put the bomb down and he is in a 1v3, he can win it. So yeah, it's on purpose so that he has the AWP.

Sunny is the weak link in the team, I believe they should add more flair to the team by picking up a stronger fragger like SCream or a versatile player like Maikelele (AWP/rifle)

They are proud that they don't prepare for and antistrat the enemy. Maybe a little more preparation could save them from chokes like on cbble. Anyways - gg.

Maybe. But anti stratting can mess up your own game, and right now mouz is getting the rounds by focusing on their own often unique tactics.

I am not suggesting to change the basic gameplan. I just think this could help in certain situations, to know what your enemy is up to. And therefore you gotta analyse your opponent.

The problem with antistratting is that it can really get you stuck in one particular flow, the one that the antistrat gameplan dictates. A player might have a lot of difficulty handling that flow if it isn't similar to his playstyle. I think that they still kinda analyze their opponents beforehand, but in no way do they antistrat.

"prepare for the opponents" and "preparing" isn't the same. You can't play at that level without having atleast a little bit of analysis beforehand. Again: they analyze, they don't antistrat.
