shroud officializes his retirement

Mike "shroud" Grzesiek released a statement earlier today formalizing his retirement from competitive Counter-Strike and announcing an end of cooperation with Cloud9.

The Canadian player was a part of Cloud9 since 2014, coming over to the organization when they acquired the former Complexity lineup, and had his LAN debut at the ESL One Cologne 2014 Major.

Mike "⁠shroud⁠" Grzesiek was also a member of the squad during Cloud9's memorable 2015 summer run, as well as when they won the ESL Pro League Season 4 Finals a year later.

shroud took a step back from Cloud9's active lineup mid-way through last year, after the PGL Krakow 2017 Major, as William "⁠RUSH⁠" Wierzba and Tarik "⁠tarik⁠" Celik came in to replace him and Jordan "⁠n0thing⁠" Gilbert. Since then, shroud was as a streamer for the organization, but that cooperation has officially come to an end today.

In his statement, shroud also ruled out a return to competitive Counter-Strike in the future, officially announcing his retirement from the game.

Ask any of his former teammates or any pro player that knew him, they will all tell you he is one of the most mechanically skilled players to ever touch the game.

I wouldn't say his aim is one of the best when you have a lot of guys who actually do have an amazing aim and actually show it. The thing that made shroud great was his mechanics. He was so crisp with his shots and it was paired up with such wonderful movement that it was simply awesome to see. For me he will always be one of the most gifted players in the world. I truly do think that with someone like fallen or such and with some time he would be one of the best.

he was one of the most popular faces of csgo when the game was booming. he wasnt a part of the players from 1.6 or source era as well. He was one of the newer faces like cold. he was also pretty influential in na and eu because back then a lot of casuals named themselves kennys or scream. shroud was one of those. you met a shroud in every 2 mm matches. any of those players could become future pros. (like twistz being a fan of twist) also he was a top 15 player on lan in 2015. 2015&2016 were the most popular era for csgo. Won a t1 tournament in 2016. Overall he was a part of t1 cs even if he wasnt always performing.

It is near his retirement when he had thoughts of going on to being a full time streamer where he really became an average (pro) player. Cs is more than just talent. Grinding different parts of the game is not for everyone. I don’t agree he could be aning the best simple because he didn’t seem to care enough, and seemed happy being average. Yes, good aim, but not really that consisyent, and also the raw aim don’t shine without some smarts. He got something better (for him), so good for him!

I didn’t mean to flame you, others might. I think the thing is that practice is a so Huge part of becoming good, and there is a reason why not everyone practices like s1mple. This makes the ‘he could have been the best aimer if he cared’ a bit far fetched I guess. If he could have become the best aimer, why didn’t he when he gave it his best? The rest of the scene is becoming better(most of them) AS well, so he would have to improve faster than all of them to become the best. In the end we will never know. What we know is he was a good aimer and pugger, and that made him famous. He is very entertaining(the way he plays not always smartest, but makes for great highlights etc), and it’s a good thing that he will focus on the stream. What I hope, is to see him invested(AS a streamer) in another competitive fps(not battle royale etc) :)

dunno how people could call him legend, thats emberassing. i dont mean to insult or flame shroud or his achievements, but he was never really someone who should be considered a legend after his rather short gaming career. he was a top NA player during a time you could hardly name 5 top NA players who mostly still couldnt perform against the best teams. nowadays NA is becoming more competitive and there are quite a bunch of talents and good players coming in and that was the time he chose to retire / go inactive. so in my books, he was a talented player, but nothing special or memorable considering his lack of success as a team and individual player aswell as his obvious lack of competitive drive.

Well it is all subjective in the end anyway. He was a legend to his fans (of which there are clearly many). And you don't need to be a fanboy to recognise the obvious skill that he had in the game, even compared to the rest of the pro scene. As his twitch emote says "He's insane!"

This has to be like the only player to literally play in the same team his entire career. I get that the lineup changed but he never left and joined any other team during his entire time playing pro. Before he joined coL which quickly got picked up by C9 he basically just played in mixteams and then retires 4 years later from the same team lol.

He might be a good aimer and has a positive streamer persona but his attitude towards CSGO has never been an inspiring one for me, every time he plays CSGO the boredom is on his face. No excitement, no thrill, no expectation. I used to think that that's his character but when he started PUBG it's a completely different person. Overall I think he's not contributed anything to the CSGO scene as a pro, not inspiring and displaying the passionate side of him. Also never achieved anything great at a personal level. Glad to see him step away from the scene. Not gonna miss a pro player like that.
