Our video editor Rama "djuhana" Djuhana has put together a compilation that celebrates Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev's MVP award from DreamHack Masters Marseille.

Despite Natus Vincere not being able to beat Astralis in the title decider, Oleksandr "⁠s1mple⁠" Kostyliev claimed the fourth MVP medal of his career, his second while not being part of the winning team, after averaging an impressive 1.52 rating throughout the ten maps he played — which includes a 1.00+ rating in each of his matches.

Besides being the event's best-rated player, the Ukrainian star led a total of 12 stats categories, including KDD (+103), damage per round (99.4), kills per round (1.00), opening kills per round (0.18) and KAST (82.2%).

As if that was not enough, the 20-year-old was also in the top five of three other categories: clutches (5), deaths per round (0.60) and AWP kills (64).

Know what really grinds my gears? That HLTV keeps referring to their own MVP awardee as "the MVP". That is confusing as fuck when the organizers also appointed an MVP, who is not the same as HLTV's awardee. I really think HLTV should start referring to their own tournament MVP award as the "HLTV MVP", to clearly separate it from any official tournament organizer MVP awards.

For sure you are salty. Cuz you are dane and you wanted gla1ve to have an MVP. But S1mple deserved it way more... Too impossible performance. Luckily HLTV grew up in terms of understandig of who they need to give an MVP. Not "the winning team player", but "the best player of the tournament, whose team went far enough to consider him as MVP contender". Glad to see HLTV changed their mind from "straight MVP to winning team" to smart MVPs to those players who actually deserved it! #RespectHLTV

I did not at any point dispute that s1mple had a case for an MVP award, because he clearly did. My gripe is with HLTV 's naming of their own MVP award. Call it what it is--YOUR MVP award, not THE MVP award; there was more than one, and the tournament organizer has more right to refer to theirs as THE MVP award, regardless of who got it.

Why does the tournament organizer have more right to acclaim the MVP? HLTV is the source from all statistic data since CS 1.6. If the tournament organiser wants to know which player was the clutch master, was the best in opening duels, they come to HLTV. Also the tournament organisers often make stupid choices by acclaiming the MVP. Look ESL Pro League Finals Odense 2017. TACO was the MVP, according ESL. And gla1ve was the DreamHack MVP in Marseille. That's why "the mvp" must come from HLTV always.

Because it's their tournament, their brand. That's not to say no-one else can't give their opinion as to who the MVP was, but then it should be more easily recognized by the award who awarded it. If we suddenly have 10 different organizations that award an MVP for each tournament and everyone just refer to their own as "The MVP of X" surely it'll become a huge cluster fuck in no time. As an example, in american football (NFL) there are several organizations bestowing MVP awards, but the official credited one by NFL itself is "The Associated Press NFL MVP Award", even if in laymen's terms it's just referred to as the NFL MVP award.
