ESL One Cologne open qualifiers reach end

The open qualifiers for ESL One Cologne have come to a close in Europe and North America, with four teams progressing to the closed stage.

In Europe, the biggest surprise was the qualification of Estonian side WASD, who defeated aAa in the last-four stage after beating the likes of Red Reserve, Sprout and AVANGAR in the previous stages.

Rainer "Dodz" Trossek's team finished top two along with Valiance, who swept through the best-of-one rounds before defeating ALTERNATE aTTaX on two maps with a strong individual display from Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač.

Valiance through to the closed qualifier

The North American qualifier was not nearly as straightforward. In the last-four stage, eUnited were handed a forfeit victory over Mythic after Eric "adreN" Hoag's side failed to comply with the league's broadcast rules, which ESL Tournament Director Jonas "bsl" Alsaker Vikan stressed that "have been there for years".

From the bottom half of the bracket came Complexity, who did not have to break a sweat to finish in the top two, never letting any of their opponents hit double digits in any of their matches.

Valiance and WASD will be joined by six invited teams in the closed qualifier, with two spots at ESL One Cologne on the line. Complexity and eUnited will compete with four invitees in the North American qualifier, from which the winner will advance to the $300,000 German event.

The team list for the two qualifiers currently looks as follows:

Even if Mythic didn't forfeit, it was a qualifier for a qualifier. They probably wouldn't have made it. Still doesn't excuse how ESL handled it. smh'ing my head esl

+1 The proper thing to do would be wait till the closed qualifier to tell them not to stream. The only reason they did it mid bo3 was because their shitty Facebook stream had a literal handful of viewers

Yeah, but did they really think that'd get them more viewers on the facebook stream anyways? I'd say that would make people - especially Mythic fans - want to watch that stream even less because of how dumb ESL were when handling this situation.

Around half or more would have probably gone to the Facebook stream (assuming they could find it outside of hltv lul)

Why does Big not get Invited ? I mean srsly whenever u have a Big Invitational Tournament in a Country were u dont expect a Hometeam to qualify u hand out at least 1 invite to get a Hometeam. ESL does it for Events in England/Australia-Asia y not for esl cologne.

mythc played a bo3 qualifier match for esl one cologne against eunited. Mythic won the first map and after that esl contacted them that they have to shut down there stream because esl got only 70 viewers on their facebook stream and the mythic guys had almost 10k over the 5 stream. So ESl broke their own rules because mythic was allowed to stream. After they didnt want to shut down the stream, they had to forfeit the match and eunited won.
