suNny: "I've been playing worse than before, but I'm working hard on fixing that"
After mousesports eliminated NRG from the tournament, we grabbed Miikka "suNny" Kemppi for an interview to reflect on the team's showing at IEM Sydney and find out more about their run in Dallas thus far.
MOUZ started the tournament with a relatively close victory against Sharks before falling to the lower bracket due to a breakdown on their pick, Mirage, against FaZe on day one.

Day two saw the European squad send NRG home after two maps, Cache and Nuke, and secure a spot in the loser bracket final, where MOUZ will face HEROIC for a spot in the quarter-finals.
Reflecting on Sydney, oskar was off in particular, but in general it just looked like some of the individuals weren't there at different points in time, is that something that you see as a problem for you nowadays or was it just an off tournament?
I think after SLTV everyone has felt kinda off, if you compare how we played at Starladder as a team to any other tournament after that, it hasn't been that great Counter-Strike. We have obviously been struggling, we lack some practice and we are the kind of team that can't trust so much in our routine compared to other tier-one teams. If we don't have enough hours, then it sometimes looks pretty funny if we play.
I've personally been playing worse than before, I'm working hard on fixing that, and I think that's also a pretty big reason why we're not playing so good. I have really impactful roles on T side on almost every map and if I make bad decisions or don't get the kills I should get, then we play badly. Yeah, Tommy also had a bit of an off period after Starladder, now he's playing much better already, but if two of our players are in a slump, it's really hard to win against good teams.
Your first match here against Sharks looked surprisingly close about half-way through before you took off and closed it out, was that simply just a slow start or was there more to it?
To be honest, I don't ever look for excuses, but now we were in Sydney, a few days home, and we come here and it's obviously jetlag life. It just felt like we weren't in the game at the beginning, but we knew that we only needed a few rounds on the CT side and we'd bring it back on the T side. It was nothing special, just like a normal first game of the tournament.
Despite it being your best map, Mirage went really poorly against FaZe, what happened there?
On Mirage none of us had a good game. Usually, some of us have a really good side, T or CT side, but now they had a pretty good counter setup for our standards. We already discussed it after the match, but sometimes it happens to us that we kind of don't have answers if the opponent is directly countering something from our standard playbook.
It basically felt like we ran too low on time almost every round and they just played much better than us on their CT side. If you watched our VOD and our decisions as individuals late round, it was just bad plays as a team and as individuals, everything just went wrong. There wasn't just one reason what went wrong.
The big takeaway from your match against NRG was that you opted to play Cache, what was the thinking behind that decision?
We have practiced many maps lately. We don't talk much about vetoes in interviews, but we just felt that it was the right decision to do. We played a good CT side on Cache for the first time ever, I think, and then although it should never happen, we already knew we were going to win the match after the CT side. They made good decisions mid-game on their CT side and it got close, but I'm happy we pulled through.
Going into the rest of the tournament here, how confident are you feeling after the first two days?
Our hardest opponents here are Astralis and FaZe. We're never feeling super confident against anyone, but I feel we can win against anyone here if we can just hit our individual peaks. I'm pretty sure we will go to playoffs, I don't know about the draw or anything, but I think we can make a deep run here and I don't see why we couldn't win it if me and oskar and Robin find our peak.
