NRG edge out G2, advance to semi-finals in New York

NRG have advanced to the semi-finals of ESL One New York after edging past G2 2-0 (Cache 19-16, Overpass 16-11) in Group B's decider.

The series started on Cache, picked by G2, who got off to the better start as they won the pistol round and the first gunround for a 3-0 lead as CT. With just a Deagle, Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte turned around a retake scenario with a quad-kill, but NRG were unable to string more together as Kenny "kennyS" Schrub replied with a quad-kill of his own, which included a wallbang double from squeaky.

NRG then found their footing and started taking over the half with six rounds in a row before the final four rounds were split among the two teams, as Alexandre "bodyy" Pianaro securing his team two rounds with a triple and a 1v1 while Tsvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov put up a quad-kill in another.

CeRq and Brehze led the way for NRG

Down 6-9, G2 clinched the second pistol round and survived the following two antiecos, in one of which Kévin "Ex6TenZ" Droolans had to clutch a 1v2 to prevent getting reset. Once again, NRG seemed to have the upper hand in the gunrounds, as they won five of the following six rounds for a 14-10 lead, but G2 fought back and went on to clinch map point.

They couldn't close it out in the last round, however, as NRG came out on top of a retake on A and proceeded to secure the win in overtime, getting 3-0 on the CT side before finishing off the opening map at 19-16.

Overpass followed as NRG's pick and it was the North American side who picked up momentum at the beginning, leading 5-1 on the Terrorist side despite losing the pistol round, as Jacob "FugLy" Medina cemented the second-round forcebuy win with a 1v1 clutch.

G2 exit ESL One New York in groups

From there on, the first half went back and forth until it was 8-3, when quad-kills from bodyy and Richard "shox" Papillon helped G2 grab three out of the last four rounds for a total of six on the defense.

The second pistol round went the other way as Ethan "Ethan" Arnold and Brehze combined for five, but G2 came out on top of the first gunrounds to lower the deficit to 10-11. However, they faltered against pistols and didn't check behind barrels on B in a 2v2 situation, which allowed Brehze to grab two kills from behind, giving NRG the 12th round.

Damian "daps" Steele's team didn't take long to finish off G2, as they came out on top of a few close retake scenarios to clinch their semi-final spot at 16-11, 2-0.

Dear G2, Please disband, it time now seriously it is. People are sick of this team and the way it plays CS. There are people madly following you because they believe in you and believe that there'll be a day. And what they get is a video of you guys saying we need time but keep supporting us and keep faith. And that is totally bullshit. You also know that there is nothing left in this team. Players like Shox and Kenny definitely deserve better place but got stuck in this team because of the friendship and shox believed that it could work out. Don't waste time of yourself and your fans. - A G2 fan :(

I know he's very hated but I think Bodyy deserves a decent team too This G2 team isn't working, and I don't think it will be. However, I still believe in the talent of their players, at least for Shox, KennyS and, yes, bodyy

bodyy is the main problem in this team, SmithZz can play the supportive role quite well and he's been proving it, especially because he's motivated from playing again, KennyS can AWP on certain maps, but he's way inconsistent nowadays, shox can lurk to perfection and is a beast and Ex6TenZ is one of the best tactical leaders in the world and he's fragging better than igleaders from other top teams such as karrigan, gob b... G2 needs an entry-fragger, a guy who can open up bombsites and give space for Kenny and co. to work, which in itself gives room for shox to cut of rotations. bodyy is sometimes a supporter, which means Ex6TenZ (on dust2 against FaZe on the major) will have to entry or KennyS (today, on overpass) will have to entry, sometimes he plays as lurker (today, on cache), because nobody can entry, except shox who used to back in the day. So he's screwing Kenny's stats, Shox' stats and Ex6TenZ' stats. He didn't even agree with the project to begin with, and he's not as good as SmithZz neither does he have a good chemistry with the rest of the team, neither experience. If Vitality gets apEX, NBK, ScreaM, Zywoo and Happy, just get RpK to entry-fragger. If some org keeps ScreaM and Vitality gets RpK, just pick up ALEX from LDLC, Ex6TenZ knows him really well and he never fails to perform, he's a lot better than bodyy and suits a star role, which opens space for the remaining of the team. I'm not understanding why 3 supporters, an AWPer and a lurker in a team with nobody to go in first to sites, especially because G2 is THE best T-sided team in the world, but absolutely horrible on CT sided, maybe the worst out of the top 30, but without an entry they're bad on CT (rarelly go for stupid pushes), but below than average T sided...

bodyy didn't agree with the project, and in terms of being a supportive player, which is the role that he has to play, SmithZz is the one doing it now, and he's playing better than bodyy did in the former line-up with apex and nbk. Now bodyy is being treated like a sort of star player, and that way he will frag. But is it worth it having bodyy playing has he is, negleting shox and KennyS (he's the reason that both never do well at the same map) ?

I disagree, but it's hard to prove a point about who is the best supporter out of the two, because being a good supporter is about sacrificing everything for you star players, the entry, the AWPer and the lurker, doesn't matter the team. People say Edward is shit and to me he's been their best player before s1mple, and 2nd best after s1mple. His inteligence and tactical geniousness id what makes the best players always perform well. body was a good supporter in the former line-up, but to me, SmithZz right now is slightly better, he's a former major winner, has loads of experience and understanding of the game and with time, he will be good, he just can't AWP, cause he's shit at it (still a better secoundary AWPer than bodyy tho). Now, the truth is bodyy and SmithZz can't coexist, G2 needs an entry-fragger so Ex6, Kenny and Shox don't need to go first every round, and so that the last 2 can perform well and even Ex6 would have a slight boost in his stats. If shox really wants SmithZz to be in the team (he has more chemistry with all 3 of them), they need to replace bodyy for an aggressive entry, someone like stewie or fer from the French speaking world, and there's only RpK, apEX and Alex to choose from. apEX would never accept this team, RpK probs will go with him to Vitality, so Ex6 should pick his former teammate in LDLC. But i think having body or smithz is the same shit, except smithzz is motivated, happy (agrees with the changes), more experience, doesn't care about stats if that matters his teammates shine, isn't easily tilted... In short, is what a support should be.

Thx mate G2 w/ Ex6, Kenny and shox is a potential top 1 squad with a good enough entry and supporter. It hurts to see them doing questionable stuff and it hurts seeing them losing round after round because people aren't doing what they're used to and need to be constantly changing their game plan for every specific map...

It's not because a team can't be top 1 that it has to deband, it's time to understand that. If G2 doesn't have what it takes to be a top tier, may be it. But don't call yourself a G2 fan if you think one member has to go everytime G2 loses. They're trying hard, respect that. With more practice and time, they will get better.

Yeah but I have the right to call myself a G2 fan AND to believe that they won't perform better I mean, I believe that they will improve, but I don't think that they have the right comp right now. I don't blame any player for that, and I support them in victory as in defeat, but if you think that they are just playing at their level and may be it, then just listen to them. They were so disappointed not to reach the top 8 at the major, they expect more from themselves and thus so do we, but even though, we still support them !

They were much better with NBK and Apex in the team. Ever since shoxs drpped out and came back, G2 has been terrible

I'm not. It's been four months since Smithzz and Ex6TenZ joined the team. They joined June 4th. The older version of G2 with Shox, KennyS, Bodyy, NBK and Apex was much better than the G2 of today, but Shox wanted his friends on the team rather than people that can actually play.

NRG edge out G2. That's just wrong. Time to focus on the climate change.

I can totally see why smithzz is in this lineup and not the coach, look at that fragging power

He is in this lineup as experienced support bodyy is the problem rn

Bodyy is not the problem, are you kidding? Smithzz is a disaster, the only reason he is in the team is because he and Shox are friends and apparently Shox has decided that he would rather play with friends as supposed to a competitive team.

Bodyy makes a lot of mistakes, he isn't doing well at his role. He was supposed to be the one who steps up if Kenny or shox fail but 69 fucking adr throughout the 2 pretty close maps tells us something. Also who do you think is a better support than smithzz in the most ego filled scene?

I agree that 69 adr for Bodyy is not a good enough result for his function and position within the team. But G2's problem is not Bodyy underperming, their problem is that Smithzz and Ex6TenZ are simply not good enough anymore to play at this level. G2 wants to be a tier1 one team (and was at one point) but Smithzz and Ex6TenZ realistically belong in tier3. Kioshima would be a much better support than Smithzz.

Kio doesn't look like a guy who would sacrifice himself for the team as much as smithzz does

bodyy needs to go, that tk on shox was crucial it proves that he isn't quite ready for high pressure cs

kinda expected tbh, with the way G2 played at the major it wasn't likely they could make playoffs here

Oh man. Shox is finally finding his stride and becoming the player he was in the past, and right around the same time, kenny is starting to suck for some reason, and Smithzz is, well...Smithzz. I kinda feel bad for both Shox and kenny. Shox is clearly wasting his talent with these people, and kenny is...I dunno, maybe ordered around by Ex6tenz in a way that makes him less confident or something. Kenny really seems like the kind of AWPer you'd want to just say "do and go whatever and wherever you want". NRG is undoubtedly a good team, but still, G2 should be showing us way more than what they have shown us if they were to ever really rise.

Smithzz won't go, Shox won't let it happen. Next in line is Bodyy and I think there's a lot of players than would upgrade G2 roster, sometimes you need to fix what you can and not what you may want.
