IEM Sydney 2019 announced with $250,000 prize pool

ESL has announced that the Intel Extreme Masters will return to Sydney for another 16-team tournament with $250,000 on the line.

The event will mark the 75th stop in the history of IEM and will culminate with three days of action in front of a live crowd from May 3-5 at the Qudos Bank Arena, the same location as the previous two Big Events hosted by ESL in Australia.

Eight teams will receive invites to IEM Sydney, while the remaining spots will be filled through online qualifiers. Europe and North America have both been allocated one qualifying spot, while Asia and Oceania will have three apiece.

IEM will return to the Qudos Bank Arena in May

The tournament will begin with a double-elimination group stage, running from April 30 through May 2. The group winners will progress to the semi-finals, while the second and the third-placed sides will square off in the first round of the playoffs, with the tournament concluding with a best-of-five grand final.

“What we have managed to build in just two years with ESL Australia and the ANZ gaming community is absolutely incredible," ESL VP of Pro Gaming Micha? Blicharz said.

"IEM Sydney is quickly becoming a staple esports event not just in Australia but globally, and it’s something we’re incredibly proud of.”

Tickets for IEM Sydney will go on sale Friday, November 16, on ticketek.com.au, with prices ranging from $39 AUD to $1,199 AUD ($28 to $860).

FaZe are the reigning IEM Sydney champions as they won the 2018 edition of the event, back in May, after beating Astralis 3-0 in the final with Richard "Xizt" Landström acting as a stand-in.

no it isn't. Just because the 3 man core remains the same doesn't mean it's the same lineup. Two (heck even one) players make a huge difference.

1. I owe you an apology for not reading carefully enough. I confused you for 3xMatheus, the other delusional BR who brought up "at least my team won major finals" even though the discussion is about MiBR. 2. What you say still doesn't make sense. Of course we are going to judge a team for how they performed 2 months ago... That's just how it is. Do you prefer we judge a team based on how they did 2 hours ago? lol. And yes, I saw Blast Pro Istanbul. Also, since 2 months seems to be TOO LONG AGO for you, how about we judge MiBR based on how they did at Blast Pro Copenhagen, the one that happened 2 WEEKS ago? :) You know, the one where where they went out 0-5, losing to fucking C9 with a coach and a stand-in?
2018-11-14 05:45

What you're saying makes zero sense. Of course you judge a team (MiBR) with the same lineup at an event 2 months ago...We all do. Same players, same org, same team, recent results. In your case, you're bringing up the LG/SK lineup that won the Majors 2 fucking YEARS ago. They're not even MiBR, technically speaking. The MiBR we know is, to put it mildly, pretty shit.

Great to see ESL/IEM really try to help develop the scene by giving 3 spots to Oceania and 3 to Asia. Keeps the tournament prestigious while giving smaller Asian and ANZ teams a chance to gain experience against top tier teams they might not otherwise get.
