Shanghai to host StarSeries i-League S7, with $500,000 prize pool

StarLadder and ImbaTV have announced that Shanghai will host the seventh season of StarSeries l-League, which will have an increased $500,000 prize pool.

The prize fund represents a $200,000 increase from previous StarSeries seasons and is a record fee for the Kiev-based tournament organizer.

The event will run from March 30 through April 7 at an as-yet-undisclosed venue in Shanghai, which hosted a StarLadder Invitational event in November 2017.

StarSeries S7 will have $500,000 in prize money

Sixteen teams will be competing at the tournament, with 13 slots being filled through invites. The last three places will be determined by regional qualifiers in North America, Europe and Asia, the details of which will be announced later this week.

Wild are the first team invited to the event after winning GAMECON Brasília 2018, which acted as a South American qualifier.

For the seventh season, StarSeries will return to the best-of-three format for the Swiss stage - which StarLadder describes as "the most successful and objective system" - after the previous event used a best-of-one format in the opening stage. The top eight teams will progress to a single-elimination bracket, which will culminate with a best-of-five final.

ENCE are the reigning StarSeries champions after winning the Season 6 event, held in Kiev last month, by beating Vega Squadron in the final.

Most top teams started to reject invites to StarSeries tournament and it lost the prestigious status once it had. It all began when Astralis decided to not attend StarSeries S5 then followed by FaZe, Na'Vi, NiP, fnatic, etc. Some teams even pulled out after accepting the invite and were under a schedule. And as a result it became true tier 2-3 tournament by Season 6. Now they are trying make the tournament somewhat prestigious by changing the location and doubling the prize thus increasing the chance of top teams accepting the invites. What i meant by my original (pun-intended) comment was that Astralis could still skip this tournament even though price is 500k now. No Astralis tournament is not a Tier 1 tournament :) You get it now? On a serious note I am happy that StarSeries made this decision to double the prize pool and changed the location. I hope every team top teams attends. This will actually make other tournaments to increase the prize pool specially the IEM, Dreamhack, etc.

@Astralis, FaZe, Na'Vi, or anyone related to any top teams. Please don't skip this event. If you skip the this tournament then ESL, IEM. Dreamhack and other top tournament organizers will be like "We will NOT increase the prizepool because it DOESN'T matter. Look at StarSeries. They doubled the prizepool to 500K and top teams didn't attend LUL" Seriously, look at that Dota shit, pubg, fortnite, LoL or whatever and see the tournament prizes and other moneys involved. It's not just because of money. It's because we love Counter-Strike. It's because Counter-Strike is passion and it has to be #1 on every way including prizepool!

Csgo is the only export that can survive without its publisher. Dota, lol, pubg, fortnite, they all only can pay big sponsorships thanks to their developer/publishers. Valve stops supporting cs:go? Katowice will still be Katowice, ESL, Dreamhack and so on still hold events. If such a healthy structure is only achievable with lower price pool, I am fine with that. It's not like current top players make 25-30k per month anyway.
