Astralis scoop $1 million Intel Grand Slam prize

Astralis won the $1 million prize from the first season of the Intel Grand Slam (IGS) after coming out on top at the ESL Pro League Season 8 Finals.

The Danish giants beat Liquid 3-1 in the grand final at a packed Sparekassen Fyn Arena, in Odense, to lift their fourth Intel Grand Slam title, after DreamHack Masters Marseille, the ESL Pro League Season 7 Finals and IEM Chicago.

According to Intel, each Astralis player and coach Danny "⁠zonic⁠" Sørensen will receive a gold bar with his name on it and the events that the team won during the season.

It took Astralis nine IGS-eligible events to scoop the prize, which was created in June 2017 to reward the team who could win four +$200,000 ESL/DreamHack tournaments in the span of ten. Even if Lukas "⁠gla1ve⁠" Rossander's troops lost the final in Odense, they would still have another shot at the prize at the IEM Katowice Major, in February.

Astralis win the first Intel Grand Slam season

FaZe was the first team to get within touching distance of the prize after winning ESL One New York 2017, IEM Sydney 2018 and ESL One Belo Horizonte, but they missed out on the chance to make history as they could not secure the title at either ESL One Cologne 2018 or DreamHack Masters Stockholm 2018.

Besides Astralis and FaZe, seven teams won Intel Grand Slam tournaments during the first season: SK (now known as MIBR), G2, Ninjas in Pyjamas, fnatic, Natus Vincere, North and MOUZ. Of these seven teams, Na`Vi is the only one retaining the roster that won an IGS trophy.

ESL has yet to announce details about the second season of the Intel Grand Slam, but it is expected to start at IEM Katowice, which would make it the first Major to be eligible for the prize.

The issue with Intel Grand Slam is that you have to win a number of tournaments in a certain amount of time which means you have to keep your extremely high form which is a tall order. I'm not even sure Astralis will ever win another prize like this ever again - they've been playing for so long, they might have burnt out.

fnatic 2014? are you high? in 2014 nip won a major and got 2nd at the other 2, while fnatic only started outperforming nip after cologne, which was in august. 2014 was two thirds nip. that's the problem with all the people that say "nip 2 years, fnatic 2 years, sk 2 years" it's bullshit, the math doesn't add up. the game was released in august 2012 and the nip era went until cologne in august 2014, that's the 2 years. that's the ONLY 2 years. we all know that the fnatic era ended with their last win at kato2016, in march. just over 1.5 years, not 2. as for the lg/sk "era" just take a look here, it should explain everything: prnt.sc/l4m7km

The Intel Grand Slam is a prize of $1,000,000 to the first team that wins 4 premier events organised by ESL or DreamHack Masters during a window of 10 consecutive events. In other words, when a team wins an ESL or DreamHack Masters event, they have to win 3 out of the following 9 events to be rewarded the Grand Slam. This prize is given directly to the players. There is also a spoils bonus for any team that denies another team their fourth victory towards the Intel Grand Slam by defeating them in a grand final. The spoiling team is awarded $100,000.

Just means that NaVi never changed their roster since their first IGS tournament win. For example: Mouz changed Styko for Snax. FaZe dropped Cromen once Olof was ready to play again.
