Lucky: "We're a bit limited as far as playing to our full potential [at WESG], but maybe we can play more freely and enjoy ourselves a bit more"

We talked to G2's Lucas "Lucky" Chastang and the team's coach, Damien "maLeK" Marcel, to hear about some of the news regarding the team after their first day of play in China.

G2 started off their run at WESG with two victories over Singularity and Revolution on the first day of play and will move to the playoffs as the highest seed in their group at a tournament where their goal is to win it the tournament and take home the lion's share of the $890,000 prize pool.

Lucky believes his passive roles bring balance to the distribution in G2

In this two-person interview, Lucky and maLeK talk about several topics, including the team's objectives in China, bringing François "amanek" Delaunay into the roster when they get back home, the team's problems with mid-round calling, and how the team is expected to change in the near future.

You've been on the team for quite some time now, can you tell me about your evolution in the team and if everything is going somewhat as expected?

Lucky: When I came in it took a while to find all of the proper roles, and adapt to them, but it's always a pleasure to play with players that I've always looked up to and used to watch when I was playing in smaller teams. It's all about finding balance. I'm a hybrid player with the AWP, so that makes me a more passive player compared to Kenny "kennyS" Schrub who's more aggressive in his comfort zone, while I like to hold angles in the double AWP setup, so I think that's good for finding that balance.

Have you prepared anything specific for WESG? Do you have any specific goals for the event?

Lucky: We only had a few days to recover from the Major, so we didn't do anything specific. We come from the Major, where we had some pressure to retain the spot and so on, so now at WESG we can play more freely and without worrying as much. We're a bit limited as far as playing to our full potential, but maybe we can play more freely and enjoy ourselves a bit more. The goal here is to win, but in the long term it's to become a consistent top team in the world.

So you decided to sign amanek, could you tell us a bit about what you think he'll bring with him to the team?

maLeK: The big picture is for him to help Richard "shox" Papillon develop as a leader and to find a good dynamic that can help the rest of the players also develop within the team. On one hand, there's kennyS, who has been working better and better and will take on some more responsibility, which he is doing naturally. Then there's shox, who will move into the core on the attacking side and will become an IGL who is at the heart of the team's movement. Audric "JACKZ" Jug will move from the outer parts of the map to be with shox and kennyS while amanek will take over the lurking duties. This will be good because shox and JACKZ get along quite well in the game, so we'll have an explosive trio, and with shox in the middle of the action it will help curb the situations in which he couldn't quite grasp what was happening mid-round because he was playing away from his teammates.

amanek also likes to grind the game and he has a lot of knowledge, so we want him to have a lot of input in the comms. I don't want to put a co-leader tag on him, but I do count on him adding to the team tactically. We also have a lot of ideas for the CT side, so we have the luxury depending on the flow of a match to play one way or another and to be able to play double AWP setups with kennyS who is aggressive and several more passive players, or even with shox who has some aggressive peeks, so that's the idea.

We were talking about mid-round problems earlier, do you think amanek will be a solution to those issues?

maLeK: Exactly, one of the things that we noticed is that having a gameplan or being able to figure stuff out in the early round is fine, we know how to build well, but it's really making those late round decisions and developing the round until its conclusion that we want to focus on, and we think that due to his profile, amanek's arrival will help us.

You talk about bringing shox back into the heart of the action, and seeing kennyS continually improve. Do you think we'll see the best versions of them, perhaps even the players we saw back in the day?

maLeK: Right now it's the present, I don't like to compare to the past, for me what is important is that everyone is active and taking responsibility on the server, that's when shox plays at his best, when he's involved and in the middle of the action. As far as kennyS goes, we've had some small positive signs as far as his individual play, but he is also becoming very invested in the game and that's very good, it needs to continue.

Lucky was saying the goal here is to win, and eventually to become a top team. For you, outside of the server, what is it you want to see?

maLeK: For me, it's all about following a path, and I don't want us to be going in circles. In France, classically, things ended in shuffles and teams changing everything completely. The idea at G2, with Jerôme, the team's manager, is to make small changes if they are needed, and if changes are made, that they're not made as a reactive measure to a tournament result or something like that.

The ultimate goal is to get G2 back where it deserves, which is amongst the top teams in the world. I don't have a crystal ball to know at what tournaments this will happen, but we'll make it back. We've started to go down a road both in and out of the game to build something solid and to try to make up for lost time. What's happening now is that we have created a roadmap that allows us to look further down the road.

Good idea using Amanek to Lurk and Co-IGL. They can read the game from all over the map now and use shox in his best position - The mid-round playmaker! Now Bodyy is gone, they have a good 5 man team. Everybody can step up and pull their weight. Now the cycle begins again!! New team - Optimism and hype - Poor results - Disappointment - Shuffle - Repeat Fingers crossed here because they're not recycling all the same faces.

You gotta feel sorry for the French scene, they went from having the best teams in csgo to just being disappointing, atleast with Australian teams I've always expected disappointment and been pleasantly surprised by renegades and gray hounds recent achievements.

2015 Peak! Then all downhill from there.. 2018 SuperTeam hype that failed miserable It's not good being a French CS fan! This year I actually feel like the team can go places because they haven't made a team of the 5 best players in a shuffle. I'm setting myself up for a fall! :) I'm happy for Renegades. They're exciting to watch atm.

I had pleasure reading your comments Ricky, you look really passionate by the cs go scene and I really appreciate the way you see the French and the other scenes.

I just say it how I see it :) I'm not a blind fanboy that defends players. If they're bad, I'll say they're bad! P.S Kio needs to make a UK team to put us on the map! He lives here and I'm sure he has a lot of friends that have potential. He was IGL of Envy towards the end too and did quite well. I met him at a LAN in the UK last year. Really cool bloke!

Well kioshiMa is my fav player and to me he's the best French player and I want him to go back on the French scene. But now you say it I guess England deserve a real scene because you have alot of skilled players He could team up with dephh, smooya etc. It could work really well!

I mean start from the bottom and take 4 unknown players that are good, they just need a big break. :) Won't cost anything to buy them out of contracts. Kio is struggling to find a team he's comfortable in. C9 just isn't working for him. I hope he comes back strong!

#26 UK has a massive player base. Just no good pro teams. Find the good ones that are not toxic and make a team. eSports is not as big as it is in other countries. There's no money for it.

I see. Without wanting to be offensive, I'm not sure this idea is realistic though. He's a legend within the game now, would he really take the gamble of making a team with four completely unknown players, even if they were talented? I dare say he's better off in C9 for now, at least he more or less knows what he's going to get out of his teammates and his salary is consistent as well. Just my opinion though.

Obviously money is a massive factor. People need to make a living. He lives here so must have friends that play CS that aren't pro's. Allu did it and now look where ENCE are!

ENCE is slightly different though, they've had to buy out their players as well (from HAVU, SuperJymy and iGame) as far as I'm aware. And players like sergej were already renowned as one of the most promising young talents worldwide when he was just 15. Also, allu had already done it once in 2016, and back then it failed, even though the same conditions were given as above, except for the actual players he played with. Anyhow, if kio decides do to that he'll definitely have pondered it enough to have reached a satisfying result. I still very much doubt he will actually do it though, just as I doubt that any decent German team will pick up a young Swiss talent in the near future. Would be great to see though in either case.

Yeah absolutely. Every single young player is grinding their asses off, hoping to be noticed. Maybe when he retires, he'll manage a young team.

I do hope for a lot of past/current top players that once they retire from competing they'll instruct a promising young team, be it from their region or internationally. This could really speed up the process of learning for the young guys and even elevate the level of the international competition in the long run.

French scene was disappointing in late 2017 and full 2018. But rn, with Vitality doing well and G2 finally starting something fresh, our scene is not so desolating imo. I know you could say flag checks out etc but i do believe Vitality and G2 have the potential to be consistent top 10 teams, which is already good !

NBK is the best all rounder in the world. I will always say that! He can AWP, IGL, pistol, rifle, anchor, support, clutch. He's so smart ingame! Natural Born Killer lives up to his name. NBK is a God in my books. apEX is the best entry fragger in the world. Zywoo is currently the best French player. The other two need to step up and they're there. It's still early days but I believe Vitality has potential to go very far! G2 has done something nobody expected and made a team of players that fit the roles they want, rather than signing the 5 best French players and making a Faze team that doesn't work. I think Malek has them on the right path and they'll do better than everybody expects. Especially as nobody has any belief left! Going to be a good year!

never was and will never be, you are simply to wrong to suggest amanek was at a better individual level than shox through the entirety of csgo + css. The reason shox wasnt shining lately is simply igl, skill is still there
