IEM Sydney opening matches recap

Seven favorites have won their opening games to begin their IEM Sydney campaign while BIG shocked MOUZ in 30 rounds.

Two double-elimination groups, each featuring eight teams, kicked off the action at IEM Sydney. In Group A, Liquid got past BOOT-d[S] without much trouble as the North Americans put on a strong performance on the T-side on Nuke, winning it with a 16-9 scoreline.

In a tight affair, BIG got the better of MOUZ without Ismailcan "XANTARES" Dörtkardeş, taking the victory in 30 rounds on Inferno. Johannes "tabseN" Wodarz topped the scoreboard with 33 kills and a 1.72 rating while Özgür "woxic" Eker could only get five kills.

Liquid will take on BIG in the next round

Renegades and Ninjas in Pyjamas secured 16-13 victories against MVP PK and eUnited, respectively, to advance to the upper-bracket semi-finals where they will meet each other in a best-of-three.

In Group B, FaZe managed to defeat Chiefs with ease despite fielding two stand-ins, winning 16-5 on Dust2. NRG were equally as comfortable, beating ViCi 16-4 on Mirage to become FaZe's opponents in the next round.

The other two games in the group featured fnatic and MIBR who respectively got past HEROIC and Grayhound to remain in the upper-bracket.

Who can say for sure, not us gob b played with karrigan so long ago, a lot of his style of calling is extremely familiar, and learnt from gob b ;) who better to spot ways to antistrat how he is using the team he has just started leading ? And with a new team comes guaranteed need for polish.. a new team is bound to be beatable just by leveraging their inefficiencies; synergy is leaning to the comms side for now surely, not being a lot of situational protocols that a team like Astralis can refer to. gob b understands this kind of thing on a level we can only imagine. I'd like to guess so i shall. He would probably point out a few ways to use the chaos factor, what positions look most vulnerable to chaos, fakes and executes, and aim for post plant situations on T side (and be fine with retakes over risk). If he can get his team into 3v3 or 2v2 planted or even 1v2 etc then making them think and communicate e.g holding from a strange spot or just playing for time more than you normally would, depends on the situation so he would have his players ready to react to how a retake is going in the moment - he makes one quick call they understand the tweak he just made and play it out how he wants. Anything you do a little different to the expected/normal holding off a retake is going to buy you a tiny advantage simply because they have to keep communicating more than would be necessary for older teams ? Fun to think about but yeah, karrigan could get better draw and just try stuff out and get better data about what goes wrong when chaos takes over; this player is out of position or whatnot. Who's to say.. I have to watch the game yet if I get a chance.. i just the end of the last round and figured ok gob doing gob things not surprised at all
