ENCE withdraw from ESEA MDL

ENCE have decided to pull out of ESEA MDL Season 31 with immediate effect, the Finnish organisation have announced.

In a statement, the BLAST Pro Series Madrid champions explained that the decision was made "after an internal discussion by the team regarding their calendar situation", adding that the players had the full backing of the ENCE management.

ENCE were sitting at the bottom of the table with a 0-2 record after losing their opening matches in the league, against Movistar Riders and Vitality.

ENCE leave ESEA MDL after just two games

By withdrawing from MDL, the Finnish giants will be passing up the chance to qualify for ESL Pro League Season 10. The winner of the ESEA league is automatically promoted to the showpiece competition, while the second and the third-placed teams will move on to a relegation stage to fight for two spots in the league against EPL teams.

“Withdrawing from MDL is not something we wanted to do, we tried to figure out a way to play the remaining 15 matches," ENCE coach Slaava "⁠Twista⁠" Räsänen said.

"Having only seven days for that it is simply impossible, we also don’t want to spend all our time for that and rather focus on our practice to improve for the many upcoming events within the next three months."

Currently ranked third in the world, ENCE have a packed schedule of three tournaments coming up - cs_summit 4, DreamHack Masters Dallas and ESL One Cologne - before attending the StarLadder Major, in late August.

I mean at the time C9 had been consistently making good showings. It was less of a fluke than people make it out to be. The "leagues" don't exist anymore as leagues either way. Looking at the "event landscape" atm, I'm not 100% against this decision. They're too good for any TO to pass on, and they don't want to/can't spend all their time grinding MDL.

Yeah, but the reason VP could stay in the talks of the Scene, is because they had matched under the MDL a lot of times, most notably to the 2018 LDLC roster. The MDL/EPL/ECS circuits are a Safe Haven for all top teams, it is something that they can rely upon for Months after their decline, and could bounce back pretty easily if need be. Disregarding the leagues is not something I'd recommend for Any lower team, but I guess ENCE is an exception. Still, the Meat Grinder of The leagues have their own flavour, and I believe ENCE is missing out on their potential towards Greatness.

Actually I disagree on pretty much everything you wrote. 1) I can't understand what you wrote about VP and LDLC, but both 100% irrelevant in 2018 2) The "safe haven" that they offered, with sponsorships and media visibility and all, is no longer the same. Like I wrote before, the leagues are NOT leagues - they are just really short lan sessions with not much to it apart from the finals. 3) I would agree with ENCE missing out on a crucial part of being a top team IF the leagues were still as they used to be. Even then, playing online leagues might cost them in the bigger picture, as they stated themselves here. Have a nice day/night though :)

New EPL format is actually massive improvement for sponsor visibility. Online leagues provide no visibility at all for org. Teams were planning to pull out if it stayed as it was. Still, doesn't make sense for ENCE to grind MDL just to try to be luck and get promotion. EPL promotion is played online ie. it's lottery.

Hmm, I suppose there are some differences in opinion or perhaps I'm just not well enough aware of how the new EPL system really works out. I'm not saying Online>LAN by any means, but I do strongly get the feeling that EPL used to be more prestigious than it is this season. Maybe it's the transition? One more factor that came to my mind is something that people outside Finland may not be aware of at all - ENCE is playing a new Finnish online league that they have apparently decided is better for them than the MDL. Seeing as their focus would apparently be in winning tier 1 tournaments in the near future, playing two online leagues with sub-par opposition is just... well, bad.

Well Telia is ENCE sponsor and its Telia esports series they are playing so you can see the relevance ;) I'm sure they've contracted to play that as a promo, and I think they do care about Finnish scene a little bit, so that the biggest Finnish league would have the best team also attending. Otherwise it makes absolute no sense to play that series.

If you win enough of the time consuming online matches you get to EPL where you play even more time consuming online matches to even get a chance to reach the finals meanwhile they can just use the time to practice their game and attend high tier lans and win there. The current tournament schedule is so saturated that you don't have time to play these qualify leagues if you get to the top fast like ENCE. Maybe this current system worked 2 years ago but not now.

I think problem for team like ence who goes to many events is that MDL totally denies them any time off and focus to practice, I think its definitely only negative for them to take part in this competition.

Do they not realize that the only way to get into Pro League and be able to attend the big event is to go through the crap that is MDL. Vitality and ENCE blew their chance last MDL season and now ENCE does it again.

Same schedule as Vitality but Vitality have the ECS finals to do also. Their objective is to play LAN's but they didn't do the ECS finals and can't qualify to the EPL now which is full LAN now... Really not understandable

probably on short term yeah, but you have to think about the long run aswell, winning MDL (or be top 3) gives you a shot for EPL season 10 which is more worth it imo and if the manage to win EPL finals which is 250,000$ (750,000$ total) .

Vitality has not gotten invites to blast events iirc. "Same schedule" implies players don't have any weddings, funerals etc. to attend to. Taking part in every tournament is bad for performance, because it makes players lose motivation. Especially if you have to play online games you are not fond of. Which ENCE clearly aren't. I have no info why Vitality stays in MDL. Perhaps making it to EPL is one of their primary goals.

Playing 2 Bo1 each days is good for practice and not that long, you can try much more things against these MDL team and still win whereas in Big Events you don't have that much freedom. ENCE could cleary get one of the 3 first places to go into EPL, it sound more like lazyness imo.
