FunPlus Phoenix forfeit Flashpoint match against Orgless

FunPlus Phoenix have forfeited their Phase 1 lower bracket match against Orgless following the "recent roster change news", Flashpoint has announced.

HLTV.org had already revealed on Saturday that there was a chance the match would not go ahead after negotiations between FunPlus Phoenix and Heroic had hit an impasse following Patrick "⁠es3tag⁠" Hansen's impending move to Astralis.

Earlier on Sunday, Astralis announced that es3tag's signing will come into effect once his Heroic contract has expired, on June 30. He will bring the roster to six players as Astralis look to "secure optimal conditions for our employees", embracing an approach that is common practice in traditional sports.

Orgless will advance in Group C's lower bracket to face Dignitas on Monday for a spot in the group final. FunPlus Phoenix have been eliminated from Phase 1 with just 15 points and will need to bounce back in Phase 2 to garner enough points to make it into the eight-team playoffs.

In a Twitter post, team member Casper "⁠cadiaN⁠" Møller admitted he was "gutted", adding that this recent development "beats" all the previous times he was mistreated in esports. He also revealed that the team had been warming up in the studio when they were they told they couldn't play the match.

It is currently unclear what roster FunPlus Phoenix will be fielding in Phase 2, which is scheduled to start on March 27.

This is faceit idiots. The Astralis contract involves the transition of es3tag after July 1. Officially es3tag, until this point is still in FFP. The team did not announce a new player on FLASHPOINT, which generally does not give faceit the (moral) right to remove them from the tournament due to a replacement. And judging by the cadiaN tweet, faceit simply removed them from the tournament, although even if there were replacements, the organizers could say that the players would play with the coach, but they did not even warn them.

Interestingly, back in the day, 6-7 man teams weren't uncommon in CS, at least at lower levels. There is even some precedence in upper tier, really, plenty of old CAL-I teams had more than 5 players. Team3D routinely swapped moto, dominator and ksharp at certain points.

there are differences. es3tag wasn’t benched like aleksib was, he is leaving of his own accord. since this seems to be messing with the deal between Heroic and FPX and therefore his teammates’ careers, his teammates are probably mad at him, while that is not necessarily true in aleksib’s case (they may have benched him without malicious intent, so there would not hard feelings between the players). basically, no one wants to play with a backstabber like es3tag, it is likely his teammates’ decision not to play with him, not his decision not to play with them. this was not the same situation with aleksib in ence.

It was forced, apparently. They were warming up and told they wouldn't be allowed to play. Not their choice. Hard to say who made the call, their org or flashpoint. I find it really unfair though, if he doesn't leave until July they should be allowed to field him in the meantime and play out their matches. It benefits no one to exclude them.
