FaZe edge out G2 in ESL One: Road to Rio
After two nailbiter maps, Mirage (22-20) and Dust2 (19-15), FaZe secured a victory over G2, their second win in the ESL One: Road to Rio - Europe.
The Kovac cousins of G2 and FaZe faced off a month ago, in the ESL Pro League Season 11 Europe group stage, with Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač powering his team to a 2-1 victory. This time around, Nikola "NiKo" Kovač got the upper had, but it was Marcelo "coldzera" David and Helvijs "broky" Saukants who were the main engines behind FaZe's victory.
broky kicked off Mirage with seven kills in the first two rounds, setting FaZe up for a strong Terrorist side on their map pick. G2 put one on the board early (3-1), but only managed sporadic rounds as NiKo and Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer fragged out, helping their team to an 11-4 lead.
With the second pistol in the bag, FaZe were soon 14-5 up, but then things started getting out of hands. huNter- picked up a crucial double on A to make it 14-9, and he stepped up with a quad kill to pull his side out of a scary anti-eco situation few rounds later. Kenny "kennyS" Schrub was also on point as G2 grabbed eight in a row, eventually leading to a 15-15 scoreline. The back-and-forth continued in overtime, and only after the second set of added rounds did FaZe manage to close out their map pick, 22-20.

G2 secured their first pistol of the series on the Terrorist side of Dust2, going up 3-0, but FaZe started putting rounds on the boards quickly, with NiKo finding success on the AWP and coldzera chiming in with good rifle work. The score was 6-3 for Janko "YNk" Paunović's men before Nemanja "nexa" Isaković turned around a 2v4 with three frags, which allowed G2 to push into the lead before half time (8-7).
olofmeister and broky recovered the second pistol round for FaZe, but they weren't able to pull off the 3-0 conversion as the French-Serbian side upset them with a mixed bag of weaponry in round 18. G2 assumed a 13-9 lead off the back of dynamic CT play, but FaZe bounced back after winning a force-buy with a B-split. The map was contested until the end, and just like Mirage, went into overtime. This time around, FaZe were dominant in the added rounds, picking up four in a row to take Dust2 19-15, and the series 2-0.
