Dignitas outlast fnatic in ESL One: Road to Rio three-map marathon

Dignitas produced an unlikely upset against world No.1 fnatic in a lengthy best-of-three series to record their first win in the European division's ESL One: Road to Rio Group A.

fnatic, the recently crowned No.1 team in the world, started their reign at the top with a nail-biting defeat against their Swedish counterparts Dignitas, who had sat rock bottom of Group B with two losses from two matches played before the series began.

fnatic looked primed to achieve a relatively comfortable 2-0 scoreline after hitting map point on Train and Overpass, but late resurgences from Dignitas on both maps forced overtime. Train concluded with a 19-17 scoreline in favour of fnatic, but Dignitas, spearheaded by a red-hot Håkon "⁠hallzerk⁠" Fjærli, battled back to win out Overpass 25-23 and force a decider.

Dignitas showed true grit against the world's No. 1 ranked team

Dust2 emulated the back-and-forth nature of the first two maps, with force buy rounds going in favour of both teams early on. Eventually, Dignitas stabilised to find success and kept fnatic’s economy in shambles to lock down a 10-5 lead on the T side.

Dignitas rapidly approached 15 rounds after they swapped to the CT side, edging closer to victory, but fnatic were determined to take the game to yet another overtime. In the end, Maikil "⁠Golden⁠" Selim and co. were shut down confidently in the final round of regulation by Dignitas, who claimed a 16-14 map win and secured the series 2-1.

Yeah, I know. They lost to BIG and North. They got then on the first place, but Valve changed rules, and NaVi didn't qualified the second time.
