Bad News Bears disband

Will "dazzLe" Loafman has announced that Bad News Bears have disbanded after some of its members received opportunities to compete elsewhere.

The announcement came shortly after Jonathan "Jonji" Carey was enlisted as a replacement for Nathan "leaf" Orf on Chaos, with Michael "dapr" Gulino taking to Twitter not long after the reveal to announce his own intention to switch over to VALORANT. The team had already suffered a blow in April after Austin "crashies" Roberts stepped down to pursue a career in Riot Games' new tactical shooter.

The core of the Bad News Bears roster first came together in January 2019, rising to prominence after being signed by Riot Squad in June of the same year. The additions of Pujan "FNS" Mehta and Jonji helped propel the team to new heights as they went on to achieve a top-two finish in ESEA MDL Season 32, notably becoming the first North American team to earn a place in the grand finals of a Global Challenge event despite eventually conceding a loss to FORZE.

Bad News Bears are no more

The team, who were ranked No. 33 in the world, also made headlines when they played under the FunPlus Phoenix banner in Flashpoint 1, managing a 7-8th finish by outplacing the likes of Chaos, Envy, and c0ntact.

They were also slated to compete in the upcoming North American division of DreamHack Masters Spring, but will no longer take part in the event after the team chose to go their separate ways.

While dazzLe revealed that he plans to continue competing in CS:GO and dapr announced his intention to move to VALORANT, the future of Peter "ptr" Gurney and Mitch "mitch" Semago is currently unknown.

Bad News Bears consisted of:

United States Peter "ptr" Gurney
Canada Jonathan "Jonji" Carey
United States Mitch "mitch" Semago
United States Michael "dapr" Gulino
United States Will "dazzLe" Loafman

You don't earn shit in VaLULrant until you're signed and with all these washed up "pros" flooding the scene clamoring for teams, the game not even being out of beta yet, no official tournaments being announced yet with only shitty small scale low-paying invitationals being organised by things like 100Thieves there is little reason for teams to even pick you up at this point. Making the switch now is borderline retarded and it's just jumping on an overhyped piece of trash, same as with PUBG back in the day. Way too much hype for such a mediocre game. All these "pros" will face the cold hard reality soon enough that their carreers will be just as dead in that trash game as it was in CS:GO and that they will get paid just as much and what will they do then? desperately jump to another game or go work at Mcdonalds or some shit.

They will probably get more views on twitch when they are streaming Valorant. All these people will be the first generation of Pro player that play the game when Riot start applying the LOL system onto Valorant. Agree or not, there will definitely be tournaments for this game and it will work for sure by the looks of it. Riot invested a lot into this game and they will commit everything they can into this. Teams will not pick any player up until the game is F2P. I agree this is a mediocre game but riot game did a great job hyping it up
2020-05-13 11:51

views on twitch does not equal money, subscribers do. And most of the viewers are just bots tying to get a key, they are not engaging with the stream other than their view in any way. We're still a long way off from Riot starting to announce and host tournaments and even further off from it being franchised. Also a lot of people are complaining it's a snoozefest when you are spectating and I have to agree so when viewership is below expectations when the game has fully released I wonder how hard Riot will keep pushing it and how they will try to entice viewers to actually watch the game. Right now with people overhyping it and players flooding to become "pro" in the game with almost no teams willing to pick players up just means an oversaturated market and that means there is a very high possibility that the players that are making the switch to revive their carreers aren't even getting picked up which means they are stuck in the exact same situation as before, that's why I think it's an incredibly stupid move fully commiting to Valorant at this moment.

I don't think switching to Valorant is the best choice either but I can understand their choice. The ultimate reason is they are not that good in CS, so they try to pursue a different career.

They were decent enough in CS where they made both EPL and Flashpoint in their respective regions. To throw that away and gamble on an unproven game with literally no scene yet is beyond stupid to me.

Why should they be entitled to pay the bills from csgo? You do realize you need to be good at a game to earn a full time wage.. If you can't make the cut you do what everyone else does and work a normal job. The fact of the matter most people at their level are only paid part time wages and earn more with a little side job. That's all they deserve.

It's because not enough orgs picked up NA teams mainly. Can't make a living, can't get recognized, might as well switch to more opportunity. It's really depressing, I was hoping the eUnited/Lazarus/Ghost projects would work out but it seems like the teams just peak for a few weeks then collapse.

Also there’s no infrastructure in NA like there is in EU. Every week there’s a new skins cup for T2-3 EU teams that attracts thousands of viewers. This makes it easier for orgs to operate and pick up teams. NA has like MDL and Mythic cup. Ultimately it seems like there’s just no viewership in NA like there is in EU. NA orgs can’t survive outside of EPL/FP. There’s no incentive otherwise.

And the problem with lower tier NA Orgs is there's minimal tournament in NA. This month in EU there's Blast Rising, Home Sweet Home and several gambling website sponsored tournament while in NA there's only MDL. Hard for lower tier Orgs to grow, there's only few spot for RtR, Dreamhack which mostly already occupied by more established Orgs. Not qualify for that means no income at all since there's no alternative lower tier tournament. CS GO just don't attract enough sponsorship in NA.

I don't understand, why is it so bad for players to switch over to Valorant. I see no issue with this yet people are flooding the forums with "wont be missed", "bad anyways", etc. Also, people act like Valorant is going to flop, yet riot games is the most competent game developers in the industry when it comes to esports. Look at league, probably the most successful esport in the industry. Honestly just seems like a bunch of 15 year old's who don't understand you need a paycheck to live.

Because there are more orgs willing to sign European teams, and betting regulations allow for more sponsors in Europe. Not to mention changes to the Pro League qualification process, and many other factors that leave non-tier 1 NA CS players with few options.

So..... Banking on a new, unproven game with the HOPE of an LCS type of infrastructure is a smart idea too right? Idk, maybe these top players have knowledge that I don't. Pro League quals was fucked though, ngl. The reason I'd imagine EU players get more opportunities goes further than just betting sponsors and it boils down to 1 word: consistency. Case & point: MAD Lions.

Also wanted to mention u can easily compare and contrast the godsent roster and the orgless roster. Both were given a very similar hand, I'd even argue the godsent roster was dealt a harder hand. (obviously before they were picked up)

What? I disagree, they cycled through a lot of different forms of the team. Before godsent they were signed by smash, also they took part in a lot of eu based smaller events to earn cash to live on. Events like these do not exist in NA. Someone said it in a post earlier but valve really should invest in smaller events if they want to pursue talent in NA.

In this last hltv confirmed, pronax said smash wasnt paying the guys, which is why they was able to get them on a ez transfer. The reason i make the comparison is because they went a while without getting paid- even had to make roster changes back when frozen got picked up by mouz (ppl forget about that) Orgless may not have ben able to enter smaller tourneys, but they had the liberty of some payment because if you don't know, flashpoint themselves sponsored the guys by paying them (confirmed by thorin) a little bit of money on top of whatever they earned from winning. I will say though, it sucks they couldn't stay in the league. FPX should've signed them if u ask me, but thats just my bias for wanting to see what they couldve became in the 2nd season The point i was making was that the godsent guys went a while without getting paid, had to climb the much harder eu ladder of rankings, and in that time, developed consistency. Orgless on the other hand had many of the same parallels, but couldn't develop the consistency needed to be a good enough team to sponsor. Instead, they cry about "they have coaches :(" and "they have more resources, its unfair :(". U can't use that card when one day u can beat DIG, but can then lose to like, triumph or something. In another HLTV confirmed, daps explained there are a lot of orgs who want to get into csgo. But.... they don't want to waste their time with rosters who aren't that good. BNB and Orgless both have had prime opportunities to prove themselves worthy over the past few months, but of course, they lost because NA CS fucking sucks and nobody wants to pay inconsistent players.

Honestly, on the side of the whole orgless vs godsent, its really hard for either of us to comment on considering we have no information on how well off the players were financially prior to getting contracts. Now, talking about NA CS I have to say it's Valves fault. Look at league, Na LCS is no where near as good as EU LCS or the Asian scene. Yet it still attracts huge orgs. You seem very reasonable and I think you can agree that Valve has made one bad mistake after another with csgo's competitive scene. Whether it's banning IBP for life (I say this because in the grand scheme of this these players had and still have large fan bases), or just straight up ignoring CS for years in favor of dota2. I think Valorant will be the biggest wake up call to Valves esports. Also, IMO dota2 lost years ago to league in terms of esports, professionalism, etc. There's so many factors in terms of NA CS I could write a whole article. But the biggest one has to be the absence of Valve.

I support CS, but I can't blame these players who are leaving. If they aren't able to make enough money to live on playing CS then who can blame them? being stuck at the MDL level doesn't benefit the players enough financially to continue in the game. Let them do what they want, no reason to knock the hussle.

I can see them winning against these two. The gun play is similar to what we have in cs and abilities will be nerfed sooner or later for some classes. You probably won't be able to rely on them too much. Since the only thing that na has is (actual good aimers) They have a chance to compete or even destroying asian scene. But for now fuk badlorant because every time i play i'm forced to play on turkish servers wich is as bad as ruskies in csgo (they even don't bother to say a single word in english)

The NA scene.... Create team, play for a couple of weeks, complain that no orgs want to sign them while they still haven't proven themselves to be worth signing, disband or make roster changes. Perhaps if they invested som time and effort into actually becoming a somewhat stable team they'd stand a chance.

The truth is that T2/T3 scene in NA is really weak partly due to lack of tournaments and money in ecosystem. Which is weird, because NA is quite rich continent regarding e-sports. But the other part is that lot of teams are generally very weak overall (no chance to ever achieve something like T1, poor discipline, core of team never sticks together for more than 3 months, etc.) and want org within few weeks, despite completely unproven. Valorant seems like solution, but it won't be. Ye, i can imagine some guys will succeed there for a while, because they started soon, but in 1-2 years there will be plenty better players and they will be forced to quit (or go to even shittier game). And all that said is assuming that valorant will be super successful in long run(!), which is not clear at all to be honest.

Can somebody explain, why is it that we only see a bunch of NA players switching to Valorant, but not really any EU ones?

In EU even advanced teams have an org, In Na it's much harder to get a good org, even teams that are in pro league were orgless

Every single EU team is sponsored by betting / gambling websites and companies. In the US this business is banned (very strictly regulated). Traditional sponsors avoid CSGO because of its theme (terrorism, bombs, killing cops). So there is almost no money in NA scene for teams outside of top 5.

Sad to see my favorite team go, but I'm very excited for Jonji on Chaos and I think Dapr has a chance to go to a good org

Its a gamble, maybe it'll work out, maybe Valorant esports isn't going to be a thing for another 6-9 months and no org is gonna pick them up, that is if they're even good enough at the game to be picked up. I can understand the move but I find it extremely risky, you throw away an actual career for a chance to earn alot of money, but an even bigger chance to fail completely and be done with it.

Really don't see what the fuss is all about and why so many players are changing to this game. Got my valorant key yesterday, they must be giving it out to almost everyone nowaday, because i only had a stream running for 2 hours in the background while working, played for a few hours... as someone who played CS since 1999, valorant doesn't speak to me. Something is just off -- the fantasy setting doesnt help either, some things are just not intuitive. I don't know. Played CS Beta 5.2 later that evening with some friends -- now thats a good game ;)
