Liquid in talks with Grim; nitr0 to step down - Report

The North American giants have set their sights on the 19-year-old Triumph rifler, who has averaged a 1.34 rating in the past three months.

Liquid have expressed interest in signing Michael "⁠Grim⁠" Wince to replace veteran Nick "⁠nitr0⁠" Cannella, according to a report from DBLTAP. The report alleges that after internal team discussions pivoted towards finding his replacement, nitr0 stepped down from the roster.

Grim has been by far the most promising prospect that is not on a top team in 2020, averaging a 1.31 rating since the start of the year. The most successful period of his career came in recent months as a part of Triumph as he impressed with strong showings against the likes of MIBR, Evil Geniuses, and 100 Thieves in BLAST Premier Showdown and cs_summit 6.

Grim has impressed in recent months with his performance on Triumph

nitr0 is the longest tenured member of Liquid, having been a part of the team's Counter-Strike roster since 2015. He led the team to a win in the second season of the Intel Grand Slam, securing the $1,000,000 prize pool in a record 63 days with victories at IEM Sydney, DreamHack Masters Dallas, ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals, and ESL One Cologne in 2019. More recently, Liquid have struggled to post the same calibre of results, ending the season with a third-placed finish in cs_summit 6 to re-enter the top 10 in the world rankings before the player break.

In a comment to Rush B Media, Liquid confirmed that Grim will be a starting member of the team's roster in their upcoming DreamHack Open Summer appearance, set to run from Aug 8-16.

It's not that adreN is a bad coach, it's just not what the players in team liquid need. Just think of the personalities in the team. nitr0, elige, twistzz, and naf are all VERY quiet and they need someone to get them fired up and adreN clearly isn't able to do that. Look at the 100Thieves roster when they had kassad and when they didn't. It's night and day. Kassad brings the best of both worlds and will be able to fire up the team and is probably better then adreN tactically anyways.

Well from what I take of the reports Nitr0 has had motivation problems and that effects the psychology of the whole team. Still think adren to analyst +kassad is a slam dunk move and maybe -stew + alex but I think stewie is a very underrated leader and is a very good igl quite frankly liquid just need to bootcamp fix there problems get there motivation back and they will be back.

Sure but we don't actually have any way of knowing what his transition will be like or if it will be smooth. As of now he's on fucking fire. And he's still got a good bit of online season left to play with Liquid. So before we making any sweeping decisions about how good he's going to be we should probably just let the kid play. Also an average 1.00 rating with some decent impact would actually be just fine for his rookie debut. He's replacing a player that couldn't even do that anymore. There's really not much pressure here if just not being a fragging black hole like Nitro was is the goal.

I don't think any team in NA needed a 'dedicated' IGL and some 'structure' team play. NA is good with their puggy style of CS and Nitr0 will be a huge upgrade over JT, in terms of experience and also firepower. C9 needs a change imo, this team has reached its full potential

I am not too sure about the decision of -Sonic because he is one of the 'star' for the team. The idea of -JT is you can't win when your IGL is not fragging. Is like DAPS at NRG, they made playoffs in most of the tournaments but they constantly lost at semi or quarter-finals.

They play a loose style and adren basically gives them the tactics. Nitr0 was a good IGL because he also fragged out. He is replaceable once he drops in performance.

They need a lot more chaos/triumph teams so the pool gets bigger and attracts more tournament organizers and new players. You see the same happening in Denmark. A team gets good and it gets picked apart by north or astralis

Totally agree. Fl0m is doing bits for the NA scene. I personally like NA cs more than EU. Whalers, zpg and whalers are great. Hopefully we'll see some more teams next MDL season. Swedish were pretty okay for a while but sadly didnt get any offers from orgs.

Hate to see nitr0 go, he was such a fixture in this team. That said, he's not really the primary issue with Liquid, and adding more firepower may not remedy the situation (which is a reliance on individual play over team play). Also, it'll be interesting to see if Grim will transition well to LAN once that comes back into the fold. Either way, good luck to Liquid, I could certainly end up wrong but I have a feeling this won't fix their underlying problems.

hltv.org/stats/players/11893/ZywOo?start.. Actually I'd say it is similar. More than half of ZywOo's maps in 2018 were against teams outside of the top 50 and 2017 works even better as an example. Sure, he showed us in the second half ot the year that he's probably a genuine talent, but earlier that year everyone was in doubt of him because he had only played online and versus bad opponents, so there's not that much of a difference there. I'm calling it now, Grim will be good in TL even if it takes him some time and even when they get to LAN. His numbers might not be as crazy, but he's gonna do it. I just have that feeling.

Probably a good move. The 1.31 rating isn't going to translate to LAN obviously as that'd make him the best player in the world. But if he can hold a 1.05 or 1.10 maybe he's going to be a great upgrade. I'd love to see Nitro go to a team like C9 to continue his career. Think he's still got some gas left in the tank. A break is likely in order and he should assess his options.

Feeling sad for nitr0 and junior tho - the former always gave everything for the team and never complained, the latter will be left behind on Triumph, which without grim most likely will perform much worse, decreasing the chances for junior to be picked up by a bigger org himself

This could also be a financial decision as well as tactical. Though I'm not sure the details of any contracts and buyouts, I think its more than likely true that Grim is cheaper to lock down than nitro. Its no secret that lots of the big CS teams lose money every year. Maybe months of winning next to no prize money on top of no LANs with media coverage has Liquid thinking that a cheap up-and-comer is the best route to take. Im sure Liquid has plenty of cash but lots of big Esports Orgs are losing big money each year on their CS teams but take the hit because of the awareness it brings to their ORG. No LANs for months or planned LANS for the future might have them taking an ever bigger hit.

What is your definition of "blossom" in regard to S2k? With Naf, Elige, Twistzz. strategies that put assets in the right spots is significantly more fruitful than S2k getting off the bottom of the scoreboard. That's been the problem w/ Liquid over the past year, emphasizing the wrong player. Who cares how well S2k performs. Twistzz and Naf's decent nto mediocrity during S2k's late tenure is s significantly more troubling. He obviously has the reigns of the team. Now IGL. Nitr0 traded for more potential fire power. One could easily suspect that as S2k, the major winner, the #1 USA earner influences the direction of Liquid, the successful version of Team Liquid fades away. Always my concern, post-Taco. Initially the brand new S2k, the subordinate support S2k with better aim than Taco lead to immediate success. But as S2k became comfortable with guiding decisions for the group, the group itself obviously very passive individuals, compliant, the original successful dynamic faded away.
