BIG edge out OG; proceed to DreamHack Open Summer final

OG and BIG won their map picks in the DreamHack Open Summer semi-finals, but it was the German squad who were able to secure a spot in the grand final with a heroic second-half effort on Mirage.

BIG came into their DreamHack Open Summer playoff match-up against OG with a clean slate after defeating Endpoint and HEROIC in the group stage. The German team will now rematch Casper "cadiaN" Møller and company in the grand final after defeating OG in a 30-round decider map on Mirage that they were able to turn around from a 9-14 deficit.

BIG won the first pistol round thanks to a 1vs2 afterplant clutch by Tizian "tiziaN" Feldbusch on the B site of Inferno with enough time to defuse the bomb, but OG retaliated immediately with a successful A play on the forcebuy, taking the lead ahead of their first buy round of the series. BIG tied it back up, 3-3, but OG charged ahead to an 8-3 lead with a red-hot Issa "ISSAA" Murad downing 21 enemies on the way to an 11-4 half.

A triple by Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt in the pistol round eased OG into the second half as they increased their lead to 12-4, but this time around it was BIG who were able to win the forcebuy to stay alive. The German squad then linked five rounds in a row before OG could retaliate, but Valdemar "valde" Bjørn Vangså then pushed down mid aggressively taking out three players to make it 14-9 as OG glided to a 16-9 victory on their map pick.

BIG won eight rounds in a row to close out Mirage 16-14

BIG took the lead on the attacking side of Dust2, and were this time able to hold on to it against the forcebuy, going up 3-0 ahead of the first gun round. Three frags by Mateusz "mantuu" Wilczewski on the defense thwarted a B play by BIG, making it 1-3, but Florian "syrsoN" Rische with a triple of his own the following round kept the wind in his team’s sails as they went up 5-1. OG slowly started to find their place as both teams were at a stalemate after 12 rounds, 6-6, but it was finally BIG who took the lead at the half, albeit barely, 8-7.

The German team then won the second pistol round, denying OG a plant on the B site and starting to run away with a 12-7 lead after the first gun round. Aleksi "Aleksib" Virolainen and company were finally able to make their way into the B site, but a four-kill round by Ismailcan "XANTARES" Dörtkardeş the following round put BIG on the path to winning the map, which they closed out after back-and-forth rounds, 16-10.

OG were overwhelmed on the CT side of Mirage

Johannes "tabseN" Wodarz downed three in the first pistol round of the decider map for BIG to get ahead on the CT side. OG didn’t take long to equalize as both teams fought close rounds early on. The European combine, who looked out of their depth on the attacking side of Dust2 were much more at ease on Mirage, taking the lead after nine rounds and going on to win the half 10-5.

BIG won a crucial pistol round to keep their options open as they made it to 7-10 before OG took the first gun round. tabseN and company retaliated the following round with a B rush, but weren’t able to find a rhythm as OG inched closer to match point. Down 9-14, BIG hit double digits thanks to a fake B play that allowed them to take the A site freely, breaking the CT’s economy and opening the door to an incredible comeback, as they went on an eight-round streak to inch past OG, 16-14, and secure a spot in the DreamHack Open Summer grand final.

GG BIG. NT OG. v4lde's underperforming in last 2 maps cost the whole match for OG. Plus, ISSAA missed some crucial shots in the end of map3. And yeah, NBK- also made mistakes.... Anyway, it was good game, although I'm sad because of ending. ;( #DreamOG

Today i am feeling very sorry for you. It was like this 1 moment, where you know you will win this game and everything changed in the mindset, but in the really bad way. I cant and will not say that BIG was the better team today. Sometimes we win this close games and i dont know why. I wish you only the best and we will see ya in a few days!

They are probably gonna play each other again in the upper bracket match of their group in cologne. I would expect BIG to beat Sprout and OG to beat NIP. Might be another close rematch.

NIP definitely has chances to win the series. OG always is up and down on their performances. Right now they seem pretty strong though and NIP will have their first official after the break, therefor I see an advantage for OG. I hope for a close series though, although both teams do not interest me that much.

Might also happen, but I don't think so. Sprout lost most of their firepower and strength with syrson k1to and towb. Would be quite an upset.

That for sure. I just think that after their accomplishments ESL Meisterschaft didn't bother them as much. You can see it the other way around aswell though. towB and both Syrson and K1to should also be very familiar with sprouts playstyle although it might have changed alot after those heavy changes.

It's the curse of beeing strong in special times which you can not do anything about . BIG is just trying their best and really performing. Still most of the people would downgrade their results. Kinda reminds me of Liquid 2019 who many people didn't praise to the amount they deserved, just because Astralis was doing stupid decisions. You can only control how well you are performing and this should be rated, not something that you cannot take influence on.

Tbh they looked a bit uncoordinated in yesterdays match. Might be the rust of the player break or OG being really good in countering them. Let's see how well they do on cologne. They still have to reach their pre-playerbreak form.
