Stewie2K about moses addition: "We needed someone to make sure people are accountable for their actions"

After beating Cloud9 in the opening game of ESL One Cologne 2020 North America, Jake "Stewie2K" Yip spoke about Liquid's coaching change and what Jason "moses" O'Toole brings to the table.

Answering a question about their coach swap, which saw moses take a step back from on-camera work and pick up the role of the head tactician for the first time, Stewie2K pointed out that Liquid needed something different from what Eric "adreN" Hoag was offering.

"I think one of the main reasons we picked up moses was just because adreN, for us, was a more strategic coach, and we felt like we didn't really need a strategic coach", the 22-year-old in-game leader said in a post-match interview on stream. "We needed someone to not be afraid to point people out, make sure they are accountable for their actions, kinda be the bad guy on the team."

moses was brought on to be the "bad guy" on the team, Stewie2K explains

Taking on the responsibility of the pointing out other people's mistakes himself "could look bad", Stewie2K expanded, as he was inevitably going to make mistakes as well. To avoid the blame game, the team's in-game leader decided a new coach would be the best solution.

"I was just figuring out what is best for us, what we need from a coach, and I think moses fits in because he is NA's #1 cheerleader and really mature too, he knows what he is talking about."

Following their 2-1 victory over Cloud9, Liquid will take on Evil Geniuses in the winners' match of ESL One Cologne 2020 NA group B. "Right now, they are ahead of us," Stewie2K said about the upcoming derby as Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz's men sit in third place of the world rankings, but "we are not afraid of them".

I didn't like it either, but it was clear they needed a change. And the only person from the 5 who new how to igl properly was Stew. There was also no one in NA good enough to IGL, People who keep saying they should get EU people clearly do not know that liquid wants to keep the whole NA thing going hence why making stew IGL was the best decision.

I reckon they could've given Nitr0 and maybe adreN a bit more time maybe after the player break and see how he does... But the decision has already been made by the players so there is nothing else to say

Fair enough, I do also think they rushed the decision. I personally think they should've waited 'till after the player break and maybe nitr0 would have been in a better form. But TL's rushing things

Tbh I thought so at first as well but looking back now I think it was right. He had a good couple of months free from the IGL role but his form never really improved, and considering how fast he moved on to Valorant maybe he was tired of CS as well.

i mean TL got shitted on by tier 2 teams in the beginning online era, maybe it's because they're not used to online at that moment or because nitr0's igl-ing style is becoming predictable, or it could be both

I feel like I'm otherwise happy with an entry fragging IGL. It's kind of like apex or zeus where they can run in, get a lot of information, and if/when they die they can focus more on IGLing. The difference though is that stewie is good enough individually that it feels kind of wasted, since he'd potentially do better without having to IGL

after n0thing left, stew igled. When their form dipped for a few events after their really good season before the major, they passed around the igl role a lot. at the major it was either tarik or autimatic igling. I think stew called some matches/rounds but he mostly wasn't igl at the major they won.

Teams like that usually play off midround calls, so I'm pretty sure that's what he's doing. Teams like that usually have a secondary caller aswell.

I'm sure people are just going off of the game round by round, like "I got a pick lets go b", "only one at A", using info and utility to judge their decisions, not much of a strat start of round unless it's a pistol or eco
2020-08-20 22:14

That's not how it works. Yea, you give info but the caller is the one who makes the call on what you're doing in the round based on info. Otherwise you cant really hold anyone accountable for those calls and you're never going to improve as a team.
2020-08-21 00:59

I mean it doesn't have to be, generally speaking players have set roles on maps to start with, so it becomes more of a habit than an actual strat. That's why they have defined roles, they get info, maybe some picks, some aggression or passive play can be a call the igl would make, but generally speaking you can only go so far as a team even with amazing chemistry and cohesion, because look at the teams who do have that and have broken up since. There will be no perfect roster, just better ones or worse ones. 1440p gaming is better than 1080p gaming
2020-08-21 01:01

We know nothing about team's chemisty or cohesion. There is no perfect way to play, you just have to play off your strengths. It's quite obvious that Liquid cannot play the same CS as Astralis, so the fact that they're trying to play CS that actually fits them I do respect.

That's going to work for 3-4 months tops and then they need to make changes again. There's only two ways you can reliably play: tactical style (Astralis way) or swedish style, sorta what fnatic and NiP before them were known for, which is actually best represented by BIG right now. Strong aimers, strong default, good chemisty, good midround calls.

It's poorly worded but I get what he's saying. This team much like Astralis actually has clearly had some motivation issues in the online era. If he was being honest probably himself (Stewie) as well. Would still have preferred Kassad as he's proven but the players clearly have a relationship with Moses and end of the day TL is not the type of team that needs a strat bible. They tried that in 2018 and it was a constant string of second place finishes.

I remember Moses heavily sweating and losing focus over MIBR's lost earlier this year. He was commentating with others but obviously got distracted; he kept drinking and not talking. I couldn't think of anything else other than he bet on MIBR, and lost a bunch of money. It was a match MIBR should've won it but didn't.
