Heroic through to ESL One Cologne semi-finals over Complexity

HEROIC have taken another scalp to secure semi-final presence at ESL One Cologne, defeating Complexity in the quarter-finals on Inferno (16-11) and Nuke (16-13).

HEROIC have been showing a solid brand of Counter-Strike since the beginning of the season when they went all the way to the DreamHack Open Summer grand final. Nicolai "⁠HUNDEN⁠" Petersen's men now continue their run of good form with a 2-0 victory over Complexity in the ESL One Cologne Europe quarter-finals. To get there, the Danish squad beat FaZe and fnatic 2-0, losing just one game in the group stage against G2 in a three-map affair that ended in overtime on the decider map.

Nikolaj "⁠niko⁠" Kristensen and Johannes "⁠b0RUP⁠" Borup secured a 2vs2 afterplant after an attack on the B site to win the pistols. HEROIC then won the first gun round, going up 5-0 before two entry frags by Owen "⁠oBo⁠" Schlatter and a double by Valentin "⁠poizon⁠" Vasilev with the AWP got Complexity on the board for the first time. Doubles by William "⁠RUSH⁠" Wierzba and Benjamin "⁠blameF⁠" Bremer helped their team secure a second round, but HEROIC didn’t slow down going up 7-2. Despite the large lead, the Danes were unable to stop Complexity from somewhat evening things up as blameF and company brought it back to a palatable 6-9 before the switch.

poizon clutched a 1vs3 situation with a glock on the A site propelling Complexity to close the gap and tie things up, 9-9, but a double by René "⁠TeSeS⁠" Madsen pushing apartments and a triple by Martin "⁠stavn⁠" Lund on B kept HEROIC ahead the following round. Casper "⁠cadiaN⁠" Møller got an AWP ace in the 22nd round to further his team’s lead to 13-9, and although Complexity won two more rounds in a back-and-forth tussle with the CTs, they couldn’t stop HEROIC from winning the map 16-11.

Complexity made it to the B site to plant the bomb in a 5vs3 situation, but the three remaining CTs were able to down the five attackers for HEROIC to take the early lead on Nuke. The European-American squad failed to win a forcebuy on the second round, going down 0-4 in a disastrous first few rounds that included a suicide and a teamkill. Two kills by b0RUP in an eco on the sixth round got HEROIC up 5-1 once again and broke Complexity as HUNDEN’s men kept the pressure up, although they weren’t able to run away with the half, once again leading by three before changing sides.

Complexity were able to win the second pistol round, but lost to the attacking side’s forcebuy as HEROIC went on a rampage round after round uncontested all the way to match point, 15-7. Back against the wall Complexity started to show signs of life, thrashing their way to a comeback, but were stopped short as HEROIC closed out the map and series, 16-13, to proceed to the ESL One Cologne semi-finals.
