oBo steps down from Complexity

Owen "⁠oBo⁠" Schlatter has made the decision to step down from Complexity, the organization's CEO, Jason Lake, has announced in a streamed press conference.

The 17-year-old has decided to bench himself in what appears to be a last-minute snap decision. According to Lake, oBo had originally told the team that he would return to the United States following the conclusion of the ESL Pro League playoffs, slated to run from September 29-October 4, but earlier on Tuesday the youngster was already at an airport to go back home.

"Over the player break, oBo expressed reservations about returning to Europe," the Complexity CEO shared in a press conference on his stream. "He ultimately decided to return [to the United States] approximately 24 hours ago, and he informed the team he'd be returning to the US at the conclusion of the EPL playoffs."

"Yesterday we were sorting out the best way forward from there. Very early this morning, London time, he informed the team that he was at the airport and that he was returning home."

oBo decided to return home hours before the start of their campaign in the DreamHack Open Fall closed qualifier

Lake went on to share that Complexity will attempt to find oBo a new team, based in North America. Meanwhile, they have already begun their search for a replacement for the American, which the organization hopes will be "the absolute best player available." However, the CEO admitted that buyouts are "a bit ridiculous," stressing that the organization will "not be extorted by teams trying to capitalize on this situation."

The decision has caused Complexity to substitute oBo with the team's coach, Jamie "⁠keita⁠" Hall, in the DreamHack Open Fall closed qualifier. There, the adjusted lineup has since lost their first match in the double-elimination bracket, to Portuguese side SAW, and is set to face SJ in the lower bracket.

It appears that Complexity might not be able to lock down a permanent replacement in time for the ESL Pro League Season 12 playoffs next week, with Lake saying that the team might have to use an emergency substitute in the league's bracket stage.

I'm primarily referring to how the vast majority of people view a night out. If I was out to drink it was with friends, I have never gone out on my own and never plan to. I don't think that's what he did. I remember going away as a boy scout to a big camp. It was only a week, but among the 100 or so children, several got home sick and had to be picked up by parents. Some are just shy, introverts, lack confidence or whatever it is. I think it's a basic Maslow's hierarchy situation too - when your basic needs a fulfilled, you begin to feel the need to have your other needs fulfilled. He had a good pay, fans and was living the career dream. But he was in a position where it didn't matter anymore and another need to over. No pay raise would have made him happier, it's an emotional decision to go back to his home.

Came to Europe and gets in the middle of a pandemic, has to stay in Europe during this whole situation away from his family who are miles away from him. This kid was 16yo and was travelling to Europe to play CS, and then gets here and has to stay inside all day because of the Covid situation, Of course he prefers to be in America during all of this.... He can be with his family during this times instead of in a Hotel room or an apartment alone.. He can play in NA close to his family more regularly and because we all know that the covid situation is really bad in America, at any moment it can get worse and worse until the whole country has to shutdown again, and in these moments it's always better to be with family rather than in an hotel room all by yourself. he's only 17yo dude

Basically there is two major problems here: 1) They way he went about the move shows immaturity. Calling from the airport last minute leaving the team/owners with not enough time to find a replacement. Its very unproffessional, even though hes young. 2) I get it must be hard to live in another country away from friends family for a 16 yo, but he had his teammates - he was not alone. To me this says a lot about him - to win and be the best you need to be tough and willing to suffer sometimes when things doesnt work out. In the long run, skill is not enough - you also need mental toughness. Look at es3tag, he has been grinding on many teams that didnt work out time after time, then sat on the bench and most people said he would never play. Did he whine and quit... no he just kept grinding and now it pays off. I would not want oBo on my team, because hes a quitter - as of now at least. He can change that over time. But all serious team leaders/owners will think that he could be a problem. Ofc we havent heard his version, but since he didnt state it already, its probably because of homesickness

He is 17, and this was probably his 1st experience outside of his confort zone. S1mple was in the same situation when he was in Liquid. He could've handled it better cuz it sucks for his teammates to be left in the dark until a few hours before he leaves, but all in all it comes with his age. This kid is good, he'll have time to mature and handle his next endeavour in a better way.
