Astralis, Complexity, EG, NAVI round out IEM Global Challenge team list

Four teams were invited to the $500,000 event in December based on their positions in the ESL world ranking.

The eight squads that will compete at ESL's final event of the year, the IEM Global Challenge, have been decided. Four teams earned their spots by winning lead-up events, with Chaos and Vitality doing so on Sunday, while the other four spots were filled by the highest-ranked European, North American, and CIS squads.

Astralis and Complexity were handed the European invites, with the latter team just barely pulling ahead of BIG in the ESL rankings before invites were handed out. Evil Geniuses joined tournament winners FURIA and Chaos from North America as Liquid missed out, while Natus Vincere were guaranteed a spot at the Global Challenge regardless of the IEM Beijing-Haidian grand final result as the standout team in CIS.

Complexity got the last European invite over BIG

The IEM Global Challenge was originally planned as a LAN event, but those plans were scrapped as the coronavirus pandemic entered its second wave in Europe. The tournament will be held on December 15-20, with a double-elimination BO3 group stage leading to a single-elimination BO3 playoff stage and BO5 grand final.

These eight teams will compete at the IEM Global Challenge:

Tbh I really like Chaos there cause of the upset potential more than another EU team that we've seen playing with other EU teams over and over and over again, boring as hell. Chaos might have a chance to prove themselves now, which is a really good experience for all of the players there. i wish them the best.

I dont really understand how complexity are ranked higher than BIG, they had pretty similar results recently with BIG beating them and placing higher in BLAST and coL eliminating BIG in IEM Beijing but cOL lost 1/5 of their points for replacing obo. I guess it has to be because of IEM counting more towards the ranking than Blast events

BLAST group stage and Flashpoint 2 group stage results aren't counted at all in ESL's ranking at the moment, I presume those will be added only after the whole event ends. They also don't take into account individual match results as the HLTV ranking does. I presume that is why there is a huge difference between the rankings atm. pro.eslgaming.com/worldranking/csgo/team..

for the ESL ranking probably yes, its just weird that col could rise the rankings so quickly after losing a fifth only by winning 1 playoff game. but as a big fan i think that col are the hotter team right now and BIG really need a break.

Heroic: DH FALL winners FURIA: ESL NY ONE NA winners VITALITY: IEM Beijing-Haidian EU winners CHAOS: IEM Beijing-Haidian NA winners REST ASTRALIS EU RANKING COL EU RANKING EG NA RANKING NAVI CIS RANKING So why the fuck there isn't faze that won esl new york eu if furia is there?

ESL New York Europe wasn't a tournament that was designated to give out an invite. It wasn't an RMR event like the North American regional tournament was. That's why DH Fall gave out an IEM Global Challenge spot - because it was an RMR event. All of this was known ahead of time Edit: I don't want to imply the fact it was an RMR event decided it by itself, but RMR events are more stacked usually and therefore it made more sense for DH Fall to give out the invite. If you compare the team lists you will see the same.

That's because IEM new york gave RMR points. It had different requirements for teams to participate. IEM new york EU was just a popularity contest and you could buy a spot.

Spirit are very overrated, in my own humble opinion of course. Top-9-10 is the highest possible point this roster can reach imo VP is a possible top-tier contender in the future but they still have a lot of work ahead of them Eg & furia after almost a month of EU praccs should perform much better, my opinion

BIG: Won 3 events Finished 5th in Dreamhack open fall. Out Complexity - 1 month roster Won only Blast Spring Did not qualify for dreamhack In. I like Col, but IMO, BIG was robbed there. They definetely deserve this spot more. Col is hardly the same team with OBO even with Jks, too little information about them for them to be in a global tournament in the middle of the worlds best. Also, the rank seems quite Biased towards astralis aswell. Even with multiple roster changes...
