Astralis eliminate Liquid from DreamHack Masters Winter

The first meeting of 2020 between the former rivals went the way of the Danish side as Nicolai "device" Reedtz put up a stellar performance (1.60 rating).

A comeback on Vertigo and a dominant game on Inferno added up to a 2-0 victory for Astralis over Liquid in the lower-bracket of DreamHack Masters Winter 2020 Europe, seeing the North American side end their run in the tournament early.

The two best teams of 2018 and 2019 met for the first time since BLAST Pro Series Global Finals in December of last year, but the Danish team ranked #4 in the world justified the favorite tag and handed yet another defeat to Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski and co. Liquid will now have two weeks to prepare for their final European tournament of 2020, IEM Global Challenge, while Astralis will play the loser of G2 - FURIA for a place in the playoffs of DreamHack Masters Winter.

device was one kill away from a 30-bomb on Inferno

Liquid took the pistol to kick off Vertigo and focused on the A site early on to start their map pick 5-2 up. device won the next one for his team, grabbing a 3K with a saved AWP, but the North Americans struck back with a B hit and ran away with the half, 10-5.

Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth went big in the second half pistol, while Emil "Magisk" Reif was crucial to his team starting the defense 3-0. The lead was grabbed by Astralis after a Xyp9x mid-round lurk that resulted in a triple (11-10), before Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken brought Liquid back to life by clutching a 1v2 on A. The game was neck-and-neck at the end, but Astralis' successful A hit at 13-13 gave them the victory, 16-14.

On Inferno, Liquid were on the back foot from the get-go, as Michael "Grim" Wince's 3K hold got them on board in round 5, but little success followed. The Danes played with the rotations and won their fights to go 8-2 up before the North Americans stabilized after two multikill rounds from EliGE.

After the score was 8-5, Astralis once again focused on Banana and won the fights to finish the half 10-5 ahead, extending to 12 after the CT pistol. Liquid's sporadic T-side success didn't amount to much, as Astralis shrugged them off, 16-7, as device reached a 29K-11D scoreline.

Stewie2K's removal makes sense, but NAF is a decent AWPer and has been performing a lot better on a consistent basis. Twistzz on the other hand has his good days, but he has become quite inconsistent with good performances. They need an actual IGL more than anything, and then maybe we will start to see some improvements.

I don't think Twistzz will ever get kicked until he loses his motivation to play in Liquid. He has already become a franchisee player with attractive appearance. But yes, they first need to find reliable igl and then look at the situation.

Ah, I definitely missed that part about Twistzz becoming a franchise player for Liquid. For Stewie2K, don't get me wrong - he's vital to the team's overall success as he calls most of the shots and has a personality like no other on the team. He gives the team morale boosts with his energy because everyone else is pretty quiet. But Liquid need more than just a morale boost from their IGL. They need more structure than what they have right now. If they want to continue playing loosely, Stewie should specify who has more freedom on certain maps and rounds. Also, everybody will 100% need to perform better than they are right now. Elige and Grim seem to be their top performers at this point in time. NAF is relatively consistent, but Stewie2K is almost non-existent in terms of fragging for the majority of their games and Twistzz does good like...1 in every 3 games which just doesn't cut it for them.

They may be just going off of NAF's recent performance, which has been below average for NAF as he's shown that he can compete with the European top dogs in the past.

Individually for sure, but apart from that? I still don't understand why they picked up grim. Yes he is a good player and a consistent fragger, but they already had 3 very strong riflers, they didn't need firepower. Imo removing nitr0 was a bad decision, it only made them even more inconsistent and as we can see stewie doesn't get any better stats in the IGL role against good opposition.

So true dude nitr0 had a huge voice in Liquids calling and they even won against Furia with nitr0 then they kicked him for grim. Grim is a good player but not the right piece for Liquid, they need a better awper IGL
