apEX takes break from competition

Vitality's in-game leader will be out of action for at least the rest of BLAST Premier Spring Groups.

Vitality announced on Tuesday that Dan "⁠apEX⁠" Madesclaire will not be a part of their lineup for the rest of the matches in BLAST Premier Spring Groups, and potentially beyond that.

In a statement, Vitality coach Rémy "⁠XTQZZZ⁠" Quoniam explained that team-wide issues, the global health situation and apEX's personal problems all led to the decision to keep the in-game leader on the sidelines for an undetermined period of time. However, the coach stressed that apEX's role within the team is "essential" and that they hope to have him back "as soon as possible".

apEX is out of the lineup due to personal reasons

"Such an announcement may come as a surprise as the season has only just begun, but the efforts made over many years, the ongoing global pandemic, and the hazards of personal life are all factors that cause difficulties to arise at any time in an athlete's career," XTQZZZ said in the statement.

The French coach noted that "the early season announcements and unjustified accusations have been difficult to take" in what can be understood as a reference to the stream-sniping case involving the team in the BLAST Premier Global Final. Vitality were fined $10,000 by the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) after it came to light that they had faced Liquid and Complexity with the stream playing in the background. According to the commission's report, there is no evidence to suggest that the players gained any advantage or cheated during these matches, and that the stream was on because of a "negligent error of unrelated Vitality staff".

Vitality's first result of the year was a third-place finish at the BLAST Premier Global Finals, placing behind rivals Astralis and Natus Vincere, and they opened the 2021 Spring season of BLAST with a 2-0 loss to Complexity. The French squad will be fighting for their tournament life in a match against Evil Geniuses, scheduled for 19:30 .

Yeah in 2016 every team was literally washed up except sk.. Navi couldnt won a shit with hungardian missing easy shots. Fnatic had problems after olof had problem with his wrist and couldnt really reach their prime ever again. Nip were failing after gtr started to become decoy. Other French team qas shit because shox stole a talent. And astralis aka tsm make their roster changes so they created two dannish team competitive but not really dominant.

I wouldnt be so sure on that. I really do not understand what you expect from him (Alex) or C9 at this moment. The woxic turmoil caused the first 3 months go almost all to toilet. Thera were changes made. We will see how this will end but still C9 is not the Vitallity caliber team. They can be 6th-12th team in a world in 6 months, but that is max for them. Is he the best IGL out there? Hell no. Is he the 6-12 IGL out there? Well, I would say so. But is a 6-12 IGL able to take a fresh new lineup and take it to 6-12 ranking placing in 1-2 months? No, he is not. It takes time. But will C9 be 6-12 in hltv ranking in June-August 2021? I belive so. Will it be Alex achievement? Yes it will. Will it be accurate to his abbilities? Yes. So by whom he is overrated? And by whom he is extremely overrated? Maybe only by you? And for Apex. He took over Vitality around Feb 2020. At that time this team had players that already played with each other for months if not years (not like Alex with C9 where he started from scrach). And even with such lineup that also had ZywOo in the squad (where there is no Zywoo in C9) it took him 4 months after which the team started to clime the ranking. Lets give Alex those 4-5 months of playtime with stable lineup and lets talk how much he is overrated after that time.

I consider ALEX overrated considering what he's being paid to do in C9, and how many people credit him with Vitality's success. It's not about personal opinion, I'm an objective person when it comes to these things. I look at teams similar to Vitality that relied heavily on quality leadership, and how much further they fell off when their IGL left. Notable examples are FaZe, Navi and Gambit. Two of those teams had a considerably higher ceiling than C9's current roster. You aren't wrong that C9 has an asterisk next to their performances, but they've been a team for a while now and with the firepower they have, even early on, should've put up better results. I'm willing to entertain the notion that they need more time to build cohesion, but I simply don't think ALEX is really as instrumental in that building as many people seem to believe.

I am a bit picky here but as I understand you consider Alex overpaid, not exactly overrated. C9 contracts are longterm, so we will see if those players are worth that money or not. They are paid for their potencial/ceiling not current form. Back to Alex. With your logic IGL may be consider good/great only if team will drop after he left given team. But in this case IGL (Alex) was replaced with even better IGL (Apex) then why expect decrease in form? So when there is no drop does it mean that Alex made bad job at Vitality or maybe it mean that Apex made his job good if not great after first 4-5 months? How this can be Alex fault? As for the form of C9. Tell me which of their last 6-8 loses should they win and way? Even if there 1 or 2 is there a team that won all their matches that it should win on paper? You say that C9 has some firepower? Do they? Which of they current players you consider a star player and tell me what place you would rank this C9 best player in a teoretical worlds best player ranking with places 1 to 100? I am not sure if any of them is in top 50 right now, so where is that C9 firepower? In my opinione it is in their playstyle and if this is not IGL influence then whom then?

First, no, I don't consider him overrated because he's overpaid. The correlation is that he's overpaid because they believe he's worth what they're paying: that he's a top IGL who can turn the team into a winner. I think he assumption he's a great IGL based on a single team's success, which continued without him, to be speculative at best. It's less about salary and more about the perception of worth. Second, apEX was never a top IGL prior to the Vitality roster change. I don't even know if I would consider him a top IGL, rather one that took the systems Vitality had been using (since before ALEX even joined) and managed to keep them steady, or improve them. I imagine he put in a lot of effort to do that, but that Vitality was as successful with him as they were is testament to how unimpressive ALEX really is in the long run. So when you say "why expect a decrease in form" it's because, if his role was as important as people claim, the team likely would've stumbled much more. This is evidenced by the previous examples I mentioned, wherein teams lost a good IGL and has lackluster results following the transition. Vitality bucked that curve, so logically ALEX was less instrumental than some other IGLs. Lastly, you're asking a very theoretical question here about where another player's worth is relative to C9's performances. So let's use Es3tag as an example: his performances in Heroic and Astralis, coming into C9, were pretty solid. He had a few bad moments here and there, but largely he was a very solid player. He has, so far, been less than stellar. Also, C9's players are all at least decent, both es3tag and floppy are solid. Mezii and Xeppaa don't have a ton of top-flight experience, but prior to that they had woxic who should've been their go-to star. Now they have ALEX on AWP, which isn't entirely his fault, but it still speaks to the mindset within the team that he can take up the role and have impact. That alone makes me question his leadership, but it also may not be his decision. Regardless of if they have a Top50/Top20/Top10 player or not, ALEX should be there to help mold those players into more than they are. As for their matches, they most likely should've beaten both Forze and Gambit, and potentially even Furia if I'm being completely honest. They narrowly beat NiP, who looked awful, and did decently enough against a few other teams, but nothing really inspired confidence to me.

I am just in progress on watching "Return Of By The Numbers #145" There is a 20 min segment about C9 starting at min 39:00. Overall I would say RL and Thorin are more on my side how Alex is doing and a more on your side about how C9 performs. So a 1:1 score :). Just to condlude. He's definitely one of the more accomplished professional players out there, but to me there is still a difference between being a goat and being really good. Goat status is something that is given to an individual if the individual revolutionized the game with pure skill. Meanwhile, I'm not of the opinion everyone in Astralis is an individual goat of cs:go, but the lineup definitely is. I don't think many will deny that Apex accomplished many things in cs:go, but goat status is not something I'd personally give him. Though he's a great guy and a great player if you ask me.

shox doesnt want to lead and hasnt wanted to since the fall of the superteam. Hell the superteam fell apart because shox couldnt bring the best out of them, wanted to stop leading and bring ex6 to lead. The other party was NBK who wanted to take the leadership, which shox didnt agree with and needed surgery, which was why NBK was given a trial with mixwell. Him leading in g2 in 2018 and 2019 was purely out of neccesity. Ex6 and Smithzz didnt work and Malek made those changes and no one was fit for the job but shox, Malek stated this many times. They also tried with Amanek leading but he didnt want it and refused to lead in the major after leading a lot in EPL. I'd like xqt to fully lead for now. Apex will be back for rmr and the major and there is no reason not to go full oldschool starix igl. Also i think shox really needs some of apex's aggresive roles not to play too stagnant and passive and get into fights more and use his aim, i tgink he could step up big time.

He probably realized that just the player break wasn't enough for him to get back into it, so they decided to take away the responsibility of being an IGl, which is just constant pressure, even during a break. Sometimes, people just need to actively take time away from their responsibilities to reset. Depending on the person and the situation, this could be a long time.

it was said by malek that he was forced into the role since the 2018 g2 after the failed superteam. He brought back ex6 for exact reason of not igling and saying he doesnt want to do it anymore publicly, on interviews on twitter. then malek and the team decided to kick ex6 after it doesnt work and make shox igl again. Then they try to give leaderpship to Amanek but he refuses and didnt want to call in the major after calling a lot during EPL. And now apex takes a break so shox is again left with no choice but to igl again. (xqtzz has the final say and he is the one that makes every decision for igl, who plays which map etc) And people will shit on him even if it hasnt been his fault for igling literslly since 2017
