Virtus.pro take down Liquid to set up all-CIS IEM Katowice final

The Flashpoint 2 champions required only two maps to seal passage to Sunday's final against Gambit.

Virtus.pro are through to the grand final of IEM Katowice 2021 following a clean 2-0 victory over Liquid. Fresh off a three-map thriller with Astralis in the first round of the playoffs, the CIS team were on the front foot from the offset, out-playing and out-aiming their opponents with imperious displays from their star duo, Dzhami "Jame" Ali and Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis.

Dust2 was easier for Virtus.pro than the scoreline suggests as Liquid won both pistols but then faded away in gun rounds. The North American team still attempted to respond on Mirage but were overrun in the second half after Virtus.pro hit their stride.

The Flashpoint 2 champions will be hoping to recreate that scintillating performance in Sunday's grand final against fellow CIS side Gambit as they chase their second title of 2021 after winning cs_summit 7 in January. However, they will need to be wary of the threat posed by the young Russian team, who came out on top the last time these two teams faced each other, less than three weeks ago.

Jame was the top performer on both maps of the series

The early signs were promising for Liquid, who took an early lead on Dust2 after a flawless pistol round. They were even to immediately respond after Virtus.pro got their first round on the board thanks to a 1v2 clutch by Michael "Grim" Wince. And then, things turned sour. Jame's troops ripped the Liquid defence for the remainder of the half, limiting their opponents to just six CT rounds.

The second half began in the exact same manner as the first, with a perfect pistol from Liquid, who then turned to Keith "NAF" Markovic for a bailout as the Canadian pulled off a 1v3 clutch after YEKINDAR had wreaked havoc with a Scout. But just like on their T side, Virtus.pro took control of the game once they had a full economy: The CIS team dictated the pace and rhythm of play, shutting out Liquid seven rounds in a row en route to a comfortable victory.

Mirage began with a clean pistol by Virtus.pro, who were unable to convert the second round after being caught off-guard by Liquid's full eco. The North American team rode that momentum to a 3-1 lead, but then Virtus.pro tightened up and put some rounds together. Liquid put their foot down after the midway point of the half, though, and managed to head into the break with a narrow 8-7 lead despite Jame boasting a 17-4 score.

Liquid added to their lead after switching to the CT side, but just like on Dust2, there was no stopping Virtus.pro in gun rounds. Big individual rounds by Jame and YEKINDAR put the CIS team in full control, with Liquid mustering only one round before their opponents ran away with the game.

I'm not disagreeing on that, but you're also ignoring the fact that nitr0, EliGE, and JDM also put up very good stats in that event, a team doesn't make the major finals off the back of one dude alone. smh

calls for Liquid were super bad, there were at least 3-4 rounds on dust2 where half their team would stand still waiting for a call. don't remember a match like that in recent history where players stop and wait for someone to tell them what to do.

I'm not active enough to create a new discussion, so I'll leave it here, maybe someone will read it. Dear fans of the CIS CS. Please stop writing shit about other teams. It's normal when you're happy for your region and for your favorite teams, but why pour shit on others at the same time? Why all this? Don't you want our region and our community to be respected and loved? After this tournament, I am ready to fully agree with Torin that most of the CIS community are stupid schoolchildren. Or maybe I'm just an idiot and don't understand how much fun this is? No matter, I want to express my respect and thank Liquid for a good game at this tournament, I am sure that they will do the work on the mistakes and give us even more interesting CS. And the VP did well, thank them for the opportunity to see the CIS final and I want to believe that this is just the beginning. P.s. I used a translator, because my knowledge of English does not allow me to write a competent text, I hope it did not turn out too bad.

This is how every CS fan's mentality should be like. Instead of trashing on other teams when your favourite team is doing well, be respectful towards every team, even if they lose 16-0. Show sportsmanship, ladies and gentlemen.

I will agree that some people are imature as f**k, and yes they are bassically kids, thats a game we are talking about,i understand your point but i cant agree with it because it's basically impossible. As for CIS writhing shit, are you serious? is CIS the only region writing shit? i guess we are just more defensive cuz some people always say bad stuff about CIS and it brewing for years on our forums, you just don't see it because of the language barrier (take that same Thorin you mentioned, he has some very interesting comments about CIS, and he's not the only one) so stop painting yourself white, there's always 2 sides of the conflict and both are responsible, just shifting the blame won't solve anything. So to sum it up, those comment you see here are just same sort of reaction you get from regular users from CIS to those 'analysts' opinions and other stuff people write here + triggered fanboys and kids at home happy for their teams win.

I'm less upset about this loss than Spirit losing, really. Liquid will, at some point, realize that Stewie2K isn't the "prodigy" people considered him. Grim can still grow, and is at least holding his own (or not going -20 every match). VP look really strong, but so do Gambit. Tomorrow's going to be a toss up.

Well VP seems to start to get their shit together, there are still mistakes to fix but it's getting better and better, I don't think they will win the final, but reaching TOP 2 is a surprise to me. Honestly Liquid looked bad, I'm surprised they made it to the semi-final with this performance, I would expect changes if they don't play good at next event.
