HUNDEN to miss IEM Cologne

The Danish team will be accompanied by two other staff members throughout the showpiece competition.

HEROIC coach Nicolai "⁠HUNDEN⁠" Petersen will not be behind the players at IEM Cologne, the Danish organisation announced on Monday. The team's backroom staff for the event will be made up of Mental and Performance Coach Troels "robl" Robl and Physical Coach Kasper Straube.

The reason for HUNDEN's absence was not given by HEROIC. HLTV.org reported on Sunday that the Danish coach is Astralis' top priority to lead the team next year and replace Danny "⁠zonic⁠" Sørensen, who is considering his options as he enters the final months of his contract with the organisation.

HUNDEN did not travel to Cologne for reasons that are unclear

"We feel great about having Troels in our starting line-up," Casper "⁠cadiaN⁠" Møller, the team's in-game leader, told Heroic's website. "This is the same set-up as when we won Pro League, which gives us a lot of confidence. Heroic is well prepared, and our entire team is super excited to be back on LAN!"

HUNDEN, who represented the likes of Copenhagen Wolves, SK Gaming, Tricked and MAD Lions during his playing career, took up coaching in April 2020 with Heroic and quickly delivered success, guiding the team to the ESL One Cologne 2020 Europe trophy.

Just one day after the team's victory, it was revealed that HUNDEN had been banned for 12 months by ESL for using the spectator bug in ten rounds of a single map during DreamHack Masters Spring. His suspension was later reduced to eight months following a review of the case by the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC), which also considered his assistance in the investigation.

HUNDEN was reinstated by HEROIC in April following his suspension, and while the Danish team haven't been able to win any trophies since then, they have continued to make deep playoff runs, and enter IEM Cologne as the No.4-ranked side.

HEROIC have been placed in IEM Cologne's Group B, which will also include Natus Vincere, FURIA, Astralis and four teams coming out of the Play-In stage. Their opening match is scheduled for Friday at 12:30 .
