Vitality subdue FURIA; NAVI beat back Renegades at IEM Cologne

The titans of Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut and Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev will face off offline for the first time since February 2020.

Vitality are through to the upper bracket semi-final of Group B after securing a victory over FURIA in two maps. The Frenchmen started off by climbing back from a deficit on Overpass, but refused to concede any ground once they gained control, securing their map before converting an early lead on Nuke into a narrow 16-14 victory to take the series.

The win sets up a match between Dan "apEX" Madesclaire's men and Natus Vincere, who survived an opening map loss to Renegades by dominating on Dust2 and Nuke to book their own spot in the upper bracket semi-final.

shox's flanks on Overpass provided key information for Vitality

FURIA got off on the right foot at the onset of Overpass, Vitality's map pick, posting a 6-2 lead thanks to multi-kill rounds from Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato and Yuri "yuurih" Santos. That edge did not last long though, and FURIA's lead rapidly began to dwindle once ZywOo came online and the Frenchmen got back in the running, bringing themselves within one round of the Brazilian team by the break. Vitality's good form continued into the second half as they took firm control on the defense, with ZywOo securing back-to-back quad kills and Richard "shox" Papillon finding flanks in key rounds as their side conceded just two additional rounds en route to a 16-10 finish.

The situation began to look increasingly dire for FURIA as Vitality put up a stalwart defense on Nuke, running up a 9-2 lead before Andrei "arT" Piovezan's troops finally began to consistently crack through. After clawing back to six rounds at halftime, a pistol win and ensuing conversions allowed FURIA to tie things up, and they briefly pulled ahead with another set of rounds to take the lead for the first time on the map. However, Vitality's map control began to constrict the FURIA defense, and with Lucas "honda" Cano being shut out, the Frenchmen were able to attain match point before a triple kill from Jayson "Kyojin" Nguyen Van helped them close things out, avoiding overtime with a narrow map victory.

s1mple scored an ace on Dust2 to grant NAVI match point

For Natus Vincere, it seemed to be a tale as old as time in their opening LAN match, one which they typically struggle in regardless of their opponent and often results in the team starting tournaments from the lower bracket. Indeed, it seemed Renegades were set to make that a reality as they put up a throttling performance on Inferno, leading 11-4 before putting a halt to a comeback effort from Natus Vincere in the second half to take the map 16-10.

However, the trio of Denis "electroNic" Sharipov, s1mple, and Valeriy "b1t" Vakhovskiy flipped the script on Dust2, battering Renegades 16-6 with s1mple picking up an AWP ace in the process. The decider, Nuke, was equally as one-sided as Natus Vincere ran away with the T side, putting up 11 rounds by the break before wasting little time in closing out the map following the side swap to take the series.

Would you use this statement to describe 2020 ZywOo as well? Since his performance only in the online part of 2020 cemented his Top1? Or would you choose to be hypocritical?

I still can't believe they let HEN1 go, they had great synergy and his AWP was impactful and their system worked until they decided to bench him and bring in Junior......

It wasn't Furia's fault. It was HEN1's idea to go off and play with his brother in O Plano, and now he's stuck in NA's tier 2 scene (which is the equivalent of tier 3 in EU).

Yeah picking comfort instead of competing with the best in EU. Maybe 'rona led to that decision who knows.. fuck that!

They weren't really performing any better though. Yeah, he was statistically great, but they weren't really winning. Hell, they were practically the same with Junior.

There is something yet to be unlocked in O Plano... it's clearly there somewhere. Perhaps HEN1 saw that. But who knows if they will have the money/time to unlock that.

Overall it was a great game for Vitality, everybody showed up and that second game was very close indeed. :) Respect goes out to Renegades for taking it to Na'VI and even taking a map off of them, the last two games Renegades kind of lost their form and overall they really struggled. Special shout-outs to those users who thought Renegades were going to 2-0 Na'Vi, claiming ESL was rigged because of a printing error by ESL. xD

+1 Shoutout to B1T for regaining his nervers after a shattering Inferno. Props to Renegades for being so crispy with their shots on Inferno, and so good with their calls all over their map. Great to see electronic performing better by the day, once again. Really well done by shox and company. Although the 2nd map was close, Vitality was almost always in control. Looking forward to an exciting, classic match-up :D

Stats aren't all, that overpass game he seemed much better than anyone on the opposition. He didn't get a 30bomb because of shox fragging out on a few rounds. He's been playing pretty well these past few games in LAN, especially when compared to his previous performances online where he looked average.

Well tbh. Vitality didn't really play well, it's more FURIA playing like shit honestly. This honda guy isn't even ready to play on a Tier 2 level, and they want him to play in the best team in Brazil, well honestly that's to much for him. NaVi won this match in the end, they have amazing players, but teamplay wise, and stratwise, man they are not no.2 team in the world. Renegades is actually looking really solid, honestly I expected an upset here, but still good match from them.
