Liquid save NIP from elimination as EPL group stage concludes

A comeback from 11-15 on the final map against FURIA saw Liquid eliminate the Brazilians and help Ninjas in Pyjamas advance to the playoffs.

Group D at ESL Pro League Season 14 has come to an end following the final set of matches. Ninjas in Pyjamas took down Gambit in the final round to clinch their third win and were only left to hope Liquid would eliminate the Brazilians for them, which the North American side did after a tightly-contested series.

The Swedes seemed to have a lock on the final playoffs spot when Liquid won the first map against FURIA 16-4 in the all-important match, but it ended up being far from a comfortable victory for Gabriel "⁠FalleN⁠" Toledo and company.

NIP breathed a sigh of relief after Liquid ensured the Swedes' qualification for the playoffs

The Brazilian side, still playing with Nicholas "⁠guerri⁠" Nogueira as a stand-in, turned the series on its head with a win on Nuke and came within one round from securing the playoffs spot on the deciding Mirage.

But Liquid did not let FURIA close the final map of the series despite being down 11-15. With Keith "⁠NAF⁠" Markovic doing much of the heavy lifting in the T side comeback and FalleN stepping up with a key quad-kill and a 1v2 clutch in overtime, the North American team pulled the series over the line at 19-17, breaking the Brazilians' hearts as they helped Ninjas in Pyjamas secure the final playoffs spot on offer.

With the Swedes advancing from third place in the group, all 12 playoffs teams are now locked in ahead of the start of the bracket stage on Tuesday.

Below are the final standings of Group D, which see Gambit finish in first place and advancing straight to the quarter-finals ahead of Liquid in second and Ninjas in Pyjamas in third, who will begin the playoffs campaign in the Round of 12:

Maybe I am missing something here: Did NIP not qualify when they beat Gambit 2-0 today? If Furia had won 2-0 against Liquid, NIP would have lost 4 maps in total and Furia had lost 5 in total. So I can't see why Liquid actually helped NIP to continue? Or does it not matter Furia had 5 maps lost in total, because they bested NIP in head to head?

If NIP don't dominate gmb with a 2-0 it would be questionable if their playoffs spot was deserved. So all fair with NIPs tiebreak win even tho they lost to furia.
