ESIC open investigation into alleged complicity of Heroic players in coaching bug abuse

The esports watchdog has received information from Nicolai "HUNDEN" Petersen which triggered the start of a formal investigation.

The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) has opened an investigation into HUNDEN's claims that players in HEROIC were aware of the coaching bug abuse after receiving evidence from the team's former coach.

HUNDEN's claims will be investigated by ESIC (photo courtesy of Heroic)

"On 4 September 2021, Mr. Petersen sent ESIC information which he alleges provides evidence that the players who were playing for Heroic at the time of Mr. Petersen’s exploitation of the spectator bug were complicit in his exploits," ESIC explains in the latest entry to their Open Investigations Register.

"Despite the fact that this allegation is contrary to previous public statements Mr. Petersen has made, ESIC has opened a formal investigation into the matter." ESIC didn't reveal additional details about how the investigation will progress, only stating that they will "make further comment on the investigation in due course."

ESIC Commissioner sheds light on HUNDEN inquiry, all other investigations

HUNDEN implicated his former teammates in the coaching bug abuse in an interview at the end of August, but the two parts of evidence he provided to back up his claims were only released on September 3 via TV2.

A part of a conversation between HUNDEN and Nikolaj "niko" Kristensen specifically implicated the current OG player, who was quoted as saying: "Everyone on our team knew it. Maybe not the first time. But after. Everyone knew that." Meanwhile, René "TeSeS" Madsen was connected to the abuse through server logs that reportedly imply the player helped HUNDEN get into an otherwise unreachable position where he triggered the coaching bug.

TeSeS: "It's very tough; there's a lot of hate going on"

Regardless of the process starting, HEROIC seem set to compete in the playoffs of ESL Pro League Season 14. As of now, the esports watchdog hasn't issued any recommendations regarding the Danish team, such as to exclude the team from ESIC-sanctioned tournaments as they did in the Akuma case. ESL are yet to comment on the matter.

The following players were a part of HEROIC at the time of the coaching bug incident:

Denmark Casper "cadiaN" Møller
Denmark Martin "stavn" Lund
Denmark René "TeSeS" Madsen
Denmark Nikolaj "niko" Kristensen
Denmark Johannes "b0RUP" Borup

Denmark Nicolai "HUNDEN" Petersen (coach)

That will not happen. Given the fact that Hunden was initially banned for 12 months and it was later reduced to 8 months. It’s unlikely they get ban for more than 12 months. But you never know, and I could be wrong.

Honestly I think ESIC will have to let this one slide. Its obvious alot of players were aware of their coaches abusing the bug. I think Richard Lewis or Thorin spoke about this but surely you wouldnt find it sus that your coach was all of a sudden having massive reads out of no where. If ESIC ban heroic its gonna spark something where alot more people are found to be involved and its gonna result in half the scene being banned. Imo the only solution to this is either a warning or a fine

this. For us plebs cs is just a game but these guys earn their living of of it. If you cheat your coworkers in your job, you will get fired as well. They all knew it was cheating, if they were indeed complicit they should get banned as well.

You don't get it bro. They would potentially have to ban half of the pros in top 30 teams today. That could mean the end of csgo pro scene , it would make csgo the laughing stock of all the eSports scene , shit load of work will have to be put in to actually catch all the pros involved , money will go down the drain , all the banned players will go to valorant and take their fans with them and suddenly that trash game will bloom , and csgo will take a massive hit and the cheating issue will be more controversial and trending than ever. Even if they ban all of heroic , they would then demand investigations against all the other teams whose coaches got banned and eventually esic would have to start lying with "not enough evidence" and let all the cheaters go. Don't forget 40 fucking coaches were involved in this , not just hunden

i think that all know, some of the players did know about the cheat, also, why should hunden not speak the truth now, also tv2 and Pimpe are 98% sure about they did know, and worst helping cheating, maybe the proof are not good enough for a banned, and if thats the case for me heroic can go bip them self, i never trust them again..

The org should be banned too. It's clear that the org was actively involved in covering it up otherwise, why would they retain HUNDEN as an "analyst" after being found guilty? Look at mouz. They kicked Rejin after he was found guilty and that was that. No more drama. It's clear as day that the players knew about the bug being exploited. The org, players and HUNDEN - all agreed that HUNDEN would take all the blame, HUNDEN would still keep his job at Heroic (probably because he threatened to ruin them all back then) and this all blows over. But obviously, things went south within the org later on for whatever reason and this is the result. Heroic players' radio silence is a sign of guilt for me right now.

Only a "few" in cycling got caught compared to the 1000's doping and basicially back then you couldnt win without being doped. Certainly not an excuse and its disgusting but they should have been pretty much banning every pro cyclist and team back then.

Yeah for sure, unfortunately it's only possible to ban the people you can actually provide solid evidence against. That doesn't mean that you don't ban the ones that you do catch because there are 'too many' of them though as #135 is saying. I used cycling as an example because I remember one major event having over 40 of the top 50 riders disqualified for cheating or something ridiculous like that. They didn't decide to let them off to 'save the future of the sport' because they aren't fools and they realise that people lose interest in sports when integrity is in question. The majority of top teams aren't in question here as suggested, mainly one, but even if they were I can't abide waiving a ban on the basis of what is basically "but they did it first Mum"

I agree with you but if you want a CSGO pro scene to exist then its something where they will have to fine it and basically say in future reference will result in a ban. As most top teams had coaches involved in this would mean that majority of the top players would likely be banned. It sucks it comes to this but if you care about the scene you dont want everyone being banned sadly

Maybe so, but when it comes to laws and rules and such I think it is so important to exercise it consistently, because otherwise it just arbitrary and it loses credibility. We are then not equal to the law no more.

Afaik, they issued a "non tolerance policy" from that point onward, which was the right call. If you think banning the entire scene is good then you are beyond saving. You would have like 5 teams out of the Top 20 which wouldn't be banned. They could've fined them yes, but banning players is unreasonable and doesn't help the scene in the slightest.

The thing here is that we moved from "it's impossible to cheat on LAN, nobody would risk their careers and easy money" to "don't ban everyone who "cheated" because we will be left with 4 or 5 teams." I really don't care, if you don't want to ban people for streamsniping, you should do some kind of money penalty for sure. Specially with that, they did multiple advices until they come up with that "from now on..." Rule, that's comical when they banned now Hunden for 2 years, when there was no rule against it and no one taking advantage of it (because nobody opened) and they gave him a shorter ban period when he really cheated. It's all wrong.

Yeah, that is the biggest problem from the point of ESIC - if they do not take action as firm as they did with HUNDEN and others, they will be discredited for being biased. But if they do, they open up a lot of implications for other teams. Hence why they should have investigated waaaay better before dealing with those bans last year. Bear in mind that this is also something that comes after a breach of contract that should be handled by Heroic and HUNDEN only, but they chose to interfere for the best sake of CSGO pro culture. If they let the coaching bug supporters slide, it would be easy to pin the whooole situtation as double standarts. Really complicated

when players from any professional organization get banned or are involved in conspiracies to cheat the system or make an unfair advantage for themselves it is never good for the surrounding community. It only brings the game down as a whole, so yes...it's not a good thing for cs.

even if some coaches would imply their players in complicity, they would have to provide evidende, aka server logs for example or comms, etc. i doubt many more coaches were as smart as Hunden to keep that data around, as they probably wanted to keep a low as possible profile and not have it traceable back to them. Hunden surely knew this is wrong, but it might come in handy saving some evidence... "just in case" :D

Kinda feels like that sadly. I dont wish that they did it, but some part of me wants to see justice and not a brush under the rug. This is a case close to the type you see with famous people avoiding paying tax and getting away with it because they are famous. They did it, but they are to popular of a team and brings viewers to game, so ESL dont want to ban them. AKUMA dosent bring in viewers, so no problem suspending them for a while.

i really hope it's not like this this time...and that they take on a popular org and its players, because evidence was provided and everyone knows they knew but yeah cadiaN mentioned in the press conference that they're already "in contact with ESIC", so that kinda says they're already negotiating their options and the ban, depending on how the react .. like if they say "we're guilty" -> ban reduction, "we didn't know, Hunden evidence is fake" -> will probably get prolongued and case won't be closed

It looks to me that HUNDEN is a lying piece of shit that is claiming this right now out of spite because he signed with astralis, gave them inside info of Heroic' strats, Heroic sued him for that and then ESIC banned him 2 years. He initially claimed no player was aware of it and now he claims the contrary. Either he lied then, or he's lying now, he's a liar cunt anyway.

He is, but theoretically he could lie about "no one knowing" just to protect other players. Now that ESIC & Heroic started this sh*tshow with another ban for him he decided going full blown and taking hostiles with him.

He lied in time when everything looked like he will stay with Heroic and covered his players, maybe even he had something promised by org if he tell that only he is responsible in that matter. Now Heroic ruined his career so why he cant go with true on public? If they really expected him to be happy when they ruined him, well here we go...

Bro, he said nobody knew because Heroic kept him undercontract, they forced him to lie, just like other coaches did. In theory he shared the stratbook because Heroic management was harrasing him because he wanted to move to Astralis after they kept him under contract. About 2 years ban for sharing those strats, has no sense at all since it wasn't a rule, Gla1ve and ropz did some tweets about how unfair that's.

True. Even if this is legit, and the players knew about it + receive punishment...Hunden should receive an additional 1 year to his ban, 3 years total, or banned forever for lying during the initial investigation.

There's literally nothing in public leaks that would be enough evidence to make them guilty, some dogshit 3 sentence conversation between him and player and no context, didn't even include question he asked, wonder why. - We went to McDonalds again and it was so fucking good. - Everyone in the team knew - Yes - Maybe not after the first time but they knew Hunden is lying rat and there's reason why he leaked it first without full context instead of waiting for investigation. Trying to ruin heroic reputation before going out of door

Most likely nothing will happen, if the proofs Hunden has released to the public, is all he have... Then it's word against word. Hunden is not to be trusted in this matter, the problem with this is that there is nothing the players can say to get rid of the blame and hate, doesn't matter if they knew or not, doesn't matter if TeSeS helped Hunden exploit the bug or not, there isn't any proof that they did, and there isn't any proof that they didn't... Besides that, there really isn't a reason why TeSeS would boost Hunden up in catwalk, it's not like he got any more information out of being 2 ft higher off the ground, for that matter... Hunden could have just asked TeSeS to boost him up there, without telling him what the boost was for. Not trying to clear the players of blame, i still believe CadiaN is capable of cheating atleast, but as of now there really isn't much to support Hundens statement, which is probably why ESIC hasn't excluded them from ESL 14

Maybe because they didn't have evidence back then? Do you expect ESIC to have psychic powers and read players' minds? Do you understand what whistleblowing is?
2021-09-06 18:42

Because hunden said to them he was the only one. No coach implicated their player's. Plus, it's hard to tell how many players knew about it. They couldn't go after player's unless they had some evidence against them.

this would be such a huge disgrace to the "integrity" of the game, which they are preaching so hard ... "zero tolerance" would also have been a lie and that they're all just corrupt, just like in Vitality stream sniping case, even if not as severe as helping the coach to abuse coach bug remember, players also didn't want to give comms and no comment on media etc, gla1ve also asked cadiaN about this in October if there is no ban for the players and org, ESIC is the biggest joke of CSGO

I personally think there's no way for the players to not be involved when the coach was (and was even banned for it). If the outcome of the investigation is that they're guilty, these players and the Org should not get just a fine and/or warning. Ban them all, for 2 or 5 years or whatever. As for the point that if the players are banned then half the scene would get banned, even better. The CSGO place would be better without all the fucking scumbags who think they can cheat and abuse bugs and get away with it. Specially with the kind of money involved. Of course that's just me thinking as 1 individual. Although I don't agree with it, I can understand the larger scene in general (Organizers, Valve and I guess other large parties) coming to the conclusion that it would harm the overall scene too much and coming to 'some sort of agreement or understanding'.

I would agree with you tbh. The scene doesnt need so many teams as there are. If a few fall away because they cheated so be it. Rather a smaller scene where people are afraid of getting caught if they do something then a scene like this with tons of matchfixing and things like the akuma case and this coaching stuff

Lets see if there is any proof, but Im pretty damn sure that if there is not, Hunden can expect a million dollar lawsuit for slander.

> "but the two parts of evidence he provided to back up his claims were only released on September 3 via TV2." i think those were "only two parts" from the whole amount Hunden submitted?

Among the 30 coaches banned for using it, None of the players from any team knew it... Lol this is better than Walt Disney Fary tale.... Ofc every player knew it, they just did not implicate them because banning the whole scene would arm viewership, and decrease earnings for investors... $$$$$$$$$$
