fnatic release Golden

A new chapter opens for the Swedish IGL after two years with the London-based organization.

Maikil "Golden" Selim has entered free agency after being released from his contract with fnatic, the organization has announced on Twitter. The 27-year old spent almost five months on the bench and is now free to explore his options in the market.

The departure officially marks the end of the Golden's second stint in a black and orange jersey, having returned to the squad in late 2019 alongside Robin "flusha" Rönnquist. The Swedish IGL's most recent appearance saw him stand behind the youngsters of fnatic Rising at WePlay Academy League Season 1 Finals as a coach.

Golden is now a free agent

Golden was a product of the fnatic Academy project, being promoted to the main roster in 2017 after Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer's departure to FaZe. In his first stint with fnatic, Golden stabilized the team and led them to glory at IEM Katowice 2018 and WESG 2017 before being replaced in the roster by William "draken" Sundin in the summer of 2018. The IGL then moved on, taking on the leadership of a struggling Cloud9 for a few months before standing in for Ninjas in Pyjamas at the StarLadder Berlin Major 2019.

His return to fnatic in 2019 alongside flusha prompted a brief resurgence over the course of the following months, culminating in trophies at DreamHack Masters Malmö 2019 and ESL Pro League Season 11 Europe, but their success would not translate into the online era. After a series of dreadful placements in 2020 and 2021, the Swedish IGL was benched in July to kickstart a rebuilding phase for fnatic that would see them go international with the addition of a British core.

"Today, we bid our final farewells to Golden. Golden climbed through our academy team into the main starting lineup, quickly proving his capable skillset as both a rifler & IGL, as well as a beloved & prized player. Thank you for everything, Maikil," read fnatic's statement on twitter.

fnatic are now:

Sweden Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson
Sweden Ludvig "Brollan" Brolin
United Kingdom Alex "ALEX" McMeekin
United Kingdom William "mezii" Merriman
United Kingdom Owen "smooya" Butterfield (trial)

United Kingdom Jamie "keita" Hall (coach)

no that would actually be sooooo sick. Bro imagine, Hampus wouldn't really care I think and having him as just a aggressive lurker and letting him frag more and just letting golden and plopski doing all the bitch roles/positions. Golden would be good since you wouldn't really need that much fire power having hampus considered the best swedish player, rez and device golden igl hampus lurk plopski support device awp rez star rifler

It supriced me a bit why they didn't got for golden instead of esetag. Golden has great aim. Esetag aims like shit to be honest. But esetag is recently sign so don't see him going any time soon. Hampus and golden both calling would be great

We will never know. People might use this time to say "see how much better Alex is as an IGL" but might forget Alex is a better individual, he got a new coach and two good players to the roster. IOW: Not even remotely close to the same setting as Golden had since Flusha and JW lost interest in the game back in 2020

Tier 1 igl , who had to work with players like jw and flusha who were way past their prime. Give him smooya and mezzi and he will make fnatic top 1. Facts : on lan , golden played more than a dozen events with fnatic. He went out in groups only 2 times. Won 4 tier 1 events and the only tier 1 events that fnatic has won since olof got injured. Got fnatic to #2 in his first run and #1 in his second. Consistently beat prime astralis and prime faze. Best igl for fnatic , online era ruined him , he deserves another chance

Yeah, golden did insanely well and is imo at least a top 10 csgo igl of all time. He made a roster of a rookie (brollan), two players way past their prime (jw & flusha) and an eternal t2 player (lekr0) into a very good top 10 team. Krimz helped of course with his insane rifling and support, but imagine what Golden could have accomplished if he had more favorable players and didn't have health issues while at C9. Fnatic rarely exited tournaments (before online) without making playoffs... Even more to his name: fnatic was his first t1 experience straight out of academy and he still did better than many igls with far more experience and better players
