Virtus.pro criticize ESL ban; allow team to participate in EPL under neutral name

The organization made a firm stance against ESL's ban but decided not to forbid their players from taking part in the upcoming season of ESL Pro League.

On Wednesday, ESL made a stance against Russia's invasion into Ukraine as the organizer unveiled its decision to forbid organizations with ties to the Russian government and those under alleged or confirmed EU sanctions related to the conflict from participating in the upcoming ESL Pro League Season 15.

The players representing said organizations would be allowed to participate under a neutral name, without representing their country and organization or their team's sponsors.

Namely, the TO identified Virtus.pro and Gambit as the two organizations affected out of the 24 teams set to take part in the league. The former's ultimate ownership reportedly tracks to Sogaz Insurance group, which is being sanctioned by the EU, while the latter is owned by Russian telecoms network MTS and by extension Vladimir Yevtushenkov, a Russian billionaire believed to have close ties to the Kremlin.

Virtus.pro allow players to take part in EPL

Virtus.pro has now made a statement addressing ESL's decision, claiming that the organization is "not connected to the government" and that there are no "rational reasons to suspend us from playing from tournaments apart from prejudice and pressure from the outside."

But despite calling the decision "a prime example of cancel culture," the Russian organization decided not to forbid their players from playing in the tournament.

"... we won't respond to this aggression with aggression of our own by forbidding our players to play in this tournament," the statement says. "They spend lots of time to become pro players, and unlike some tournament operators, we are not ready to invalidate someone else's efforts."

"If they decide to play at the tournament, we will support their decision."

ESL Pro League bans "organizations with ties to Russian government" from upcoming season *

Although it seems the decision now lies in the team's hands, it is unclear whether they will participate in ESL Pro League Season 15 or not, and the team has yet to comment on the situation.

Current sanctions placed on Russian airlines around Europe make it difficult for anyone to travel from Russia, and Virtus.pro field at least two players affected, Dzhami "⁠Jame⁠" Ali and Evgenii "⁠FL1T⁠" Lebedev, who are believed to have returned to their home country following the conclusion of IEM Katowice.

ESL Pro League Season 15 will take place at a studio location in Germany. Virtus.pro have been placed in Group B, which is set to kick off on Wednesday, March 16.

It’s russian based orgs, russians can technically still play (like m0nesy for example) cause he is part of G2. I know entropiq isnt part of BLAST, but theoretically if they somehow qualified they would be allowed to play even with 4 russians cause their org is czech. So dont say all ruskis cant play cause that technically isnt true, but i do agree that ESL has appproached this much better than BLAST

Vp statement was big statement and they wanted to say its wrong to ban Russian teams. It is problem in other sports like NHL it has been large speculate that Russian players will not be draft eligible. And if that happen it will ruin so many innocent Russian players career. Especially when the same tournament organizers then talk about how esports is some equal plain where everyone can make their mark. Based VP. I am curious cause USA did not have war for A LONG time (at least in their eyes cause you gotta be in war every few years), when that happens, will ESL cut this? Will ESL cut NA teams with that? Yeah, that's true, no military should sponsor anything. However, to go and ban teams with (alleged) ties to the Russian government like ESL or teams that are russian I guess like blast, but then allow literal government strongarms like the american military (the worst offender when it comes to dodginess in terms of their history) to DIRECTLY sponsor an event. I literally think it could be part of that sponsorship that would cause a conflict of interest here. It allows for political pressure to seep through and overlap the core competiton, which is something ALL competiton suffers from now, even esports sadly. Thorin absoluitely will not truly criticize it, and frankly any political take he has is usually dogshit anyway. His esports takes are pretty good but he beat around the bush on this topic altogether. Also btw, if America isnt directly fighting someone at any given time, they are giving money to people fighting (think Israel, cant w8 for 10yr for mentioning this), and it usually the offending party that they sponsor. HLTV keeps deleting my comments, because I wrote that ESL is owned by Saudi Arabia (who voted in favor of Russia's war) and their totally unpolitical organisation banning Russian teams is simply hypocritical. Apparently ESL's/Saudi-Arabias pockets are deep and they pay HLTV to delete any ESL/Saudi-Arabia related criticism. But hey, as Carmac stated, the ESL won't change, lmao
