NAVI CEO: "We hope that we are going to keep [the CS:GO] roster and that the Russia-based players are going to relocate"

Amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Natus Vincere CEO Yevhen Zolotarov commented on the future of the Russian players on his CS:GO roster.

Zolotarov spoke to the Washington Post in an interview conducted amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, discussing the effects of the war on his organization and the stance NAVI is taking in response while it navigates an unpredictable and ever-changing situation in its home country.

The CEO shared that there is a possibility that the Ukrainian organization will part ways with some of the Russia-based players on its payroll, as it looks to cut ties with anyone who lives and pays taxes in the Russian Federation.

"We are not going to work with people who live in Russia and who pay taxes to the Russian Federation," he said.

NAVI CEO hopes the Major-winning team will stick together

This is a big concern mainly for Natus Vincere's CS:GO division, which currently has three Russian players part of the roster in Denis "electroNic" Sharipov, Kirill "Boombl4" Mikhailov, and Ilya "Perfecto" Zalutskiy.

However, Zolotarov shared his belief that the Kyiv-based organization's major rosters will remain the same and stressed that the organization is ready to help relocate players "who don't share the Russian Federation's politics."

When specifically asked about the future of the CS:GO team, the NAVI chief once again repeated those hopes: "We hope that we are going to keep this roster and that the Russia-based players are going to relocate."

The interview comes before Natus Vincere are slated to start their campaign in ESL Pro League Season 15's Group D on Wednesday, which will mark their first appearance since they went out of IEM Katowice in the semi-finals just days after the invasion began.

The issuing of visas as it stands is pretty much halted. Those russians who live in EU have their visas for now, until they expire, and at that point it's pretty much gg, back to Russia. Best option for the russian players in NaVi is to possibly move to Serbia and apply for Serbian dual citizenship which would allow them to travel for the forseeable future. Which is exactly what m0nesy has done.

with the level of corruption of russian and european diplomats you can get a visa in 1 day to almost any country of eu. in some countries you can legalize and stay if you have money. navi players can already announce that they are citizens of an eu country. but they are media people and you understand that this is sus

not really, there is simply no reason to bully the regular russian ppl here, only the oligarchs and political members. The oil/gas problem is blown way out of proportion because people here are just unwilling to save energy both in the industry and most of the citizens. If we would just be more ecological there would not be a problem, also CDU as the main political party for most of the last 20 years has hindered the expansion of renewable energies in germany which was stupid. It should get better now with other parties in charge but it will take time, which sadly the ukrainians don't have right now.

googled. found out information tech companies are apparently being offered generous tax cuts and employees are exempt from conscription. that sounds about right, but i didn't really verify it. however why would anyone who can leave stay though? russians very well versed in information tech are typically those that speak at the very least two languages, and they'd get paid more abroad. if they think their rubles are going to be worth nothing, then they're just gonna leave.

Not for all Russians. Old Russians love Putin because all of sanctions does not affect them directly. They dont traveling, they dont using western goods, they dont using internet so for them nothing changed. They dont have bank accounts so their money isnt frozen. Lack of food is translated this way its a governor faults but not Putin. They got use to it in the past after USSR collapse so they can adapt with ease to this situation. Younger Russians are scared because of arrests and noone of them want to spend life in Gulags. Stalin starved 12 million of Russians befor WW2 so you think Putin cant do it? We need to slowly realize that Russia will be no more in the European society, economy and the only thing we share with them is borders.

And even so, it is a decision many people do every day for many reasons. One of those reasons being work opportunities in foreign country. Even with families. And its not like they can never return to russia. How I understand it, they would have to spend majority of their time in the new country (Serbia) at least in beginning. But after some time (I have no actual idea, lets say a year) they would have double nationality which makes them travelling in and out of russia much easier. And its not even the travelling part which is the issue here, only that they are allowed to pay taxes to another country.

Kazakhs are the same friends for Russia as Belarusians. Hobbit does not have such a low self-esteem to leave for the team, where the former manager publicly stated that he went to cut the Russians, and the current one puts an ultimatum to the Russians to change their citizenship, or they will be fired. No amount of money is worth such humiliation. The Hobbit has everything, he doesn't need to dirty his name with this shit.

Russian orgs can’t effectively play anymore in CSGO or any other sport, just look at the fact that Gambit is selling the roster. So if he goes into a Russian org he can also just stop playing the game, same thing

Why do you feel bad for electronic specifically? He has a choise of move or not to move. If he moves, it sucks for his parents and such relatives who will see the daughter much less. The daughter will not remember a thing, so there is no need for feel sad for her. Then they will do some extra work to figure things out or pay someone to figure things out for them. They can also take the parents with them if willing. On the other hand we have S1mple and B1t and many other guys whose home country is being attacked and bombed to ruins and they have no choise in the matter. They can only follow the events and hope for the best. I just don't understand this logic.

My point is that I don't feel bad for elec just because he has a wife and a kid. In my opinion its the same situation compared to perfecto and boomlb4; do you want to leave to pursue your career or not. Actually when we look at it, shox for example made similar decision this year by moving to usa. Only difference being that the choice wasn't forced upon him to make but he made it himself.

electronic has a family, he and boombl4 will have to make tough decisions in future. Anyway here is NaVi vlog where they are currently staying: youtube.com/watch?v=AZhxQHdn_RQ

Electronic doesnt have a family? This is suppose to be a problem i guess Boombl4 and perfecto could go to Serbia

RIP NAVI I guess. Because there's no way Perfecto, Boombl4, and electronic are relocating. I "understand" the org given their situation but it's not as simple as "relocating". These players have families living in Russia. Electronic has a kid that probably goes to school. In his case, I guess "relocating" would reach his wife and kid. But even then, his wife probably has a job. Boombl4 is married now. Is Perfecto supposed to leave his family behind? Am I getting all of this right? Again, I "understand" NAVI's situation but the org is essentially punishing their (innocent) players, potentially forcing them to leave their dream jobs for no impact or change. And that's only the CSGO division. NAVI has multiple teams that probably consist of many Russian players. Of course I support Ukraine but this is taking it too far.

Is it as easy as changing citizenship to stop paying taxes to Russia? If that prevents them from having to relocate then it’s fine. Otherwise, they’d be simply punishing their players for being Russian.

To be honest, I don’t know how the procedure for changing citizenship is carried out at all and what is needed for this. The only thing i know is that if a person (doesnt matter if he has a RU citizenship or no) stays more than 6 months during the calendar year in Russia, then he is considered a tax resident and should pay taxes for all income he receives, regardless of their source.

Well, that settles it then. They have to relocate, leave friends, families and jobs behind or be fired. It’s wrong.

I think boom and elec will not want to relocate, so NaVi will keep perfecto and replace both with another players, or maybe all 3.

Don't forget about $$$ motivation. Staying in Russia will undoubtedly hurt them financially. Are they ready to literally pay the price? that's an important aspect to include. Family is another aspect. National politics are quite secondary to these aspects. So if they stay, it's most likely not because they support their nation, but because they support their family.

"We have a lot of Russians who have played for NAVI for years, and they understand that everything that is happening on Russian TV is bulls---. I mean, they understand that because they spend a lot of time in Ukraine. They boot camp here. They know us." elec has played in NAVI for 5 years, been to Kyiv multiple times - hard to believe that he will fall for the stupid Putin's propaganda about Ukrainian Nazis.

Another brainwashed Serb saying nonsense. Where did you find Russian civilians in Ukraine? Russian civilians live in Russian Federation, which is a different state - and they need to keep their dirty noses out of sovereign Ukraine.

Where did you find dead 15k Russian civilians in Ukraine? Explaining now: there is a country called Ukraine. The people living in this country are called Ukrainians. PS. Well, now there are actually 15k dead Russians in Ukraine - they are not civilians though, they are foreign invaders.

Reasonable. The players can choose whether to move or not, but an Ukrainian org has every right not to want to pay people who pay taxes in Russia, thus indirectly financing invasion of their own country.

I think NaVi don't have problems with making players other citizenship, because of their money. I think Serbia or some other country like baltian countries for example can be easiest warriants for keeping roster.
