00:20 Astralis and Movistar Riders eliminated as day one of the Road to Rio European open qualifier ends

The last few games of today's action did not disappoint, as two huge shocks went down.

Astralis, the world No. 4 team, were sent packing by world No. 198 Neon Rangers, who had Vitaly "L1GH7n1nG" Lyubarets to thank for an impressive performance to get them over the line 16-14.

The Danes may well blame a hangover from their BLAST Premier games from earlier in the day, but the other top 10 team eliminated have no such excuse.

World No. 6 Movistar Riders could not overcome François "amanek" Delaunay's LDLC side, losing 12-16 to once again crash out of the qualifier before the second day of play.

That's it for the live post, remember to continue following this open qualifier tomorrow head over to our event page.

23:30 Apeks eliminated as day one of the qualifier nears its end

We are almost at the end of the first day's action, and yet more upsets have occurred.

Richard "shox" Papillon' new squad Apeks find themselves dumped out 16-19 by Genk, the shock upset seeing them fail to make the second day of play.

Mathias "MSL" Lauridsen's TITANS project has also not faired well, falling 13-16 to the 167th seed in the qualifier, Insilio.

Finally, Copenhagen Flames are enduring a rocky start to life with their new roster, being crushed 5-16 by Finest in the round of 64.

22:00 Copenhagen Flames and LDLC taken to OT

A couple more near-misses occurred for high-profile teams in the round of 128.

amanek's new team LDLC had to battle to a 25-22 win over flowstate, and they needed a monster 46-kill performance from Remi "Diviiii" Alexandre to get there.

Copenhagen Flames also had to fight to make the round of 64, squeaking a 19-16 win over STRZELCY V2.

21:50 Astralis survive OT to make round of 128

After failing to progress through the last qualifier, Astralis almost suffered an early exit here after being taken to double OT by Brandbergen Shooters.

Eventually Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander and co. got over the line 22-18.

21:00 f0rest loses out to KRIMZ

Ludvig "HEAP" Alonso and Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg could not secure bragging rights over fnatic, with d00m losing out 3-16 against Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson and co.

Entropiq made short work of Partizan, crushing them 16-3 with Aleksei "El1an" Gusev topping the scoreboard.

Another interesting result saw Aleksi "allu" Jalli's new JANO roster eliminated 13-16 by Atmosphere.

19:45 Mouth-watering matchups await in round of 256

With the first couple of rounds over, some exciting matchups are starting to happen.

Entropiq will be facing off against the new Luka "emi" Vuković-led Partizan squad in what is probably the strongest matchup of the round.

We will also get to see some Swede-on-Swede action, with f0rest's d00m mix taking on fnatic. There are some fascinating storylines at play here, with HEAP playing against the team that opted against signing him, and f0rest taking on an organisation he has a rich history with in 1.6.

19:15 No upsets yet as qualifier continues

The big-name teams remain untouched as the qualifier continues, with teams like Copenhagen Flames and LDLC taking quick 16-0 wins.

Elsewhere, Budapest Five encountered a bizarre bug in their opening game where one of the enemy players ended up outside the map.

17:45 smooya and f0rest enter mix-teams

Benched Heroes and d00m return for the second qualifier, although this time the Swedes will be fielding HEAP instead of Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund.

Owen "smooya" Butterfield and co. were bested by BAKS last time out, whilst d00m were eliminated at the hands of AVANGAR.

Benched Heroes:

United Kingdom Owen "smooya" Butterfield
Russia Eugene "Aunkere" Karyat
Ukraine Rodion "fear" Smyk
Poland Michał "MICHU" Müller
Belgium Nicolas "Keoz" Dgus

d00m:

Sweden Ludvig "HEAP" Alonso
Sweden Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg
Sweden Adam "friberg" Friberg
Sweden Jonas "Lekr0" Olofsson
Sweden Jack "Jackinho" Ström Mattsson

17:16 A quick recap of the first open qualifier

Many of the expected names successfully navigated the first qualifier, teams like Sprout, MOUZ, OG and Falcons, but that does not mean there were not plenty of shocks and upsets.

Aurora, featuring the likes of Viktor "Lack1" Boldyrev and Aleksandr "KaiR0N-" Anashkin, made a surprise run to qualify last time around, taking impressive wins over Astralis and BLUEJAYS in the process.

Astralis had cruised through their first attempt up until being upset by Aurora, and will be hoping for better fortune this time.

Movistar Riders were the other casualty from the top 10, being unceremoniously dumped out of qualifier one by Romanians INFINITE in their first outing without star AWPer Álvaro "SunPayus" García.

Other big-name teams that are back for another bite of the cherry are fnatic, who eliminated Endpoint before being bested by Falcons previously, Entropiq, who lost to Sprout, Copenhagen Flames, who also succumbed to Falcons, and BLUEJAYS, who lost to Aurora in their prior attempt.

17:00 The second European RMR open qualifier begins soon

Five teams locked themselves in for the Road to Rio Europe RMRs a few days ago, and four more spots are up for grabs in the IEM Road to Rio Europe Open Qualifier 2 which kicks off today at 18:00 .

Can Astralis qualify with their second attempt?

Teams will make their way through a single-elimination best-of-one bracket, with the exception being that quarter-final qualification bouts will use best-of-three. As there are only four places for the RMRs on the line in this qualifier there will be no fifth-place decider bracket, but there will still be a third place decider best-of-one for seeding purposes.

Some of the high-profile teams participating in this qualifier are:

The teams who were already qualified for the European RMRs through their finish at the last Major are:

The teams who made it through the last open qualifier were:

#1 Denmark Sprout
#2 France Falcons
#3 Europe MOUZ
#4 Russia Aurora
#5 Europe OG

I mean it's a random bo1 online event It happening twice certainly isn't good, but other good teams also lost. Coaches can't participate either which sucks. Astralis exclusively playing teams they have never played against. How do you anti-strat an opponent you don't know but who definitely know you?

How do you anti-strat a faceit 3.5k elo mix???? Come on dude, you're delusional to think that they lost because they couldn't anti-strat, and you think that every team in the qualifier is watching astralis' demos to study every tendency and outsmarting them on tactical maps such as, mirage XDDD. Not sure to what event you're refering to by "random bo1 event" but this is only a first stage of blast (they are a partner team btw) that's bo1 to seed for later stages that are bo3, IF you however are talking that a QUALIFIER FOR A MAJOR is a random event then i don't know how dumb you must be. Well, i'm gonna be glad if they won't make it since they breed fans like you.

It does matter a lot. Multiple pro players were talking about this. In the Masonic game (Astralis VS Masonic) the danish commentators from Masonic talked about how big of an advantage they had because Astralis had never played Masonic, and that Masonic had been strongly preparing for this match. So clearly some teams are. I said "random" because it feels random that good teams like OG, Heet, Astralis etc. are playing this tournament when they previously qualified for the RMR and or Major, why do they start at the very bottom? Any team, can loose an online bo1. Online CS:GO is just a lot more random. And they have to play 6 in a row, just to get to on bo3 and then qualify. So at that point, who actually qualfies becomes a lot more random. There is overwhelmingly clear evidence of this. HEET literally lost to a team called GERGCHI that aren't even in the top 300. So maybe this system needs a revamp.

With masonic it's different, because teams HAD TIME TO PREPARE since they reached top32, instaed of going from a bo1 into a next one within 10 minutes, you're telling me that neon riders studyied theri ass off in 10 minutes between the games and "outplayed them"? Delusional once again. Good teams deserve to be there because they are houshold names!!!! Astralis went out of challanger stage 2-3 in antwerp, hence they NEED TO QUALIFY again, OG, Fnatic and Heet didn't qualify for major through RMR, why would they get an invite to the rmr for that reason????? Oh wait, how did HEET, OG and fnatic got into the rmr??? OH WHAT, FROM THE BOTTOM??? GEEZ WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT!!!! Astralis was in the antwerp RMR because they got to Legends stage in stockholm which gives you a spot in the next RMR, in antwerp THEY DIDN'T DO THAT so they need to start from the bottom to qualify for RIO. Any team can lose online bo1, that's why your precious team loses to russian aimers that rush a/b and outaim your 500k a year players ON MIRAGE, YOU PLAY MIARGE AGAINST FPL-C GODS AHAHAHHAHAHA. No, it's not random, first qualifier all the teams deserved to be there - Falcons, mouz, sprout, OG, the only odd one is AURORA but they must've studied asstralis all night before the game nearly losing to monte because of that and making KONFIG AND FARLIG SUCK ASS for their game. No, we shouldn't change anything because A TEAM THAT SHOULD'VE WON, DIDN'T SO WE NEED TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM!!!1 Heet lost to top300, asstralis lost to top200, so? What are you trying to say, it's the 10 or so year system that's at fault for astralis being BAD, or heet being bad or movistar being bad or pASHANOJ being good???? BO1 are hard and random but you only care about them when it's your precious asstralis that risk not getting into a major :_(((((( Blocked. #fanlogic

Why play this hard qualifiers when they can play women only tournaments and loot free money
2022-08-21 06:32

Most female teams can't, for the same reason academy can't. Also, it's better to just practice and scrim instead of play completely random bo1 where your coach can't even have an input on real time. These quals are a very shit system

I kinda hope astralis won’t make it through the qualifiers so they finally make changes. I know that they won their group in blast but even that wasn’t convincing at all. In my opinion missing out on all the ex cph flames players was a huge mistake. They should’ve gone for nicoododz at least.

This shows how hard T2-T3 CS is and if those top teams don't get consistent invites, they won't qualify for many of those events. Major is the only event where every team is on an even playing field. If you play well in major circuit, you will get rewarded while if you poorly you will get punished

I mean CS is just too random in my opinion..I don't like you can hit HS from random shots where you crosshair is on a different place for example...its just not alright because that one kill can decide important round where the economy is ruined and it snowballs then etc....yesterday Navi lost on ovp easily and then few hours later won 16:3 or something....like wtf is this
2022-08-21 07:27

most big t1 teams would still qualify but they'd have to adapt to fighting teams that know what they will do while they have no idea what the enemy will do t1 teams go into it with a huge dissadvantage and specially astralis who is doing a quali for the first time

Only Astralis can lose to nonamers AND be 4th in the hltv rankings.

they are not weird, this is EU open Qualifiers, where a lot of bo1's are played, what did you expect? was obvious some tier 1 teams would fall, they are not used to it. anyways, they will most certain qualify

I agree that it's not that unexpected to lose at open qualifiers' bo1 when you are a t1 team vs a stack as the latter can prepare sth vs their eminent opponents but Astralis lost like that twice already and they're top4 team according to HLTV rankings
