Fragadelphia 17 reaches playoffs

Apeks, TeamOne, and both of Evil Geniuses' squads are in the playoffs.

The Fragadelphia 17 group stage has drawn to a close, giving way to the playoffs where eight teams are set to battle it out for both the trophy and the lion's share of the $100,000 prize pool.

The tournament in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, kicked off on Thursday with the Last Chance Qualifier. A handful of international squads, such as Apeks and TeamOne, fought their way past the domestic competition in that stage, eventually securing group stage berths.

Apeks are still in the title run after a rocky start in the USA

The group stage split sixteen teams into four, equally-sized groups, with the teams coming into play from two different stages. The first eight, who made their way through the aforementioned Last Chance Qualifier, joined the likes of Squirtle Squad and ATK, who received direct invites to the main event thanks to their prior placings in previous Fragadelphia tournaments and their affiliated ESEA Cash Cups.

Unsurprisingly, the bigger names of the grassroots event made light work of their North American counterparts to secure their respective playoff appearances; the favourites all moving through the group stage, as BIG Academy, TeamOne, ATK, and EG White all finished at the top of their groups.

The biggest anomaly to this was Apeks, led by Martin "STYKO" Styk, who had to get their revenge over Squirtle Squad in Group B to clinch a spot in the playoffs after suffering a shock 0-2 opening-round defeat.

The Fragadelphia 17 quarter-finals will begin on Sunday at 16:00 , with the following matchups:

16:00 Germany BIG Academy vs. North America Electrify Steel
16:00 Europe Apeks vs. Other ATK
19:00 Brazil TeamOne vs. United States EG Black
19:00 United States EG White vs. United States Iron Blood

For exclusive content and interviews, alongside more in-depth coverage, Dust2.us is running updates and reporting live from Philadelphia.

I wouldn't say smurfing if they almost lost to Timbermen. Smurfing is when a team is leagues above all the rest. Yet they almost lost to not even the best team here. so therefore they aren't smurfing

they should be below the competition since they are academy. still they only lost 1 map so far and are the best team at the event. i would consider this smurfing NA. even if they lose every game from now on. they still were smurfing in NA. :)))

But that’s not what smurfing is. If they won every match 2-0 with every map being 16-8 or better, then they’d be smurfing. Yes an academy team is supposed to be better than a normal team, but most of the teams here aren’t normal teams, they are semiprofessional teams so it (kinda) evens out

TeamONE are the best team at event and also there are two other academy rosters at the event plus there were academy rosters last frag as well i dont get what your point is

The Americas definitely care, Fragadelphia is one of the last domestic tournaments in the region. Really good to see young guys get LAN experience, especially against the European squads like Apeks

Was Wings Up ranked higher then them? Anyway, they are definitely still one of the best NA teams. Just a lack of participation really has sent them lower since participation is a big part of how the ranking works, especially at lower ranks

frag allows it. At a lot of the smaller frag events, you will get schools that have an A and B team at the same event.
