sh1ro stars as Cloud9 overcome Imperial in IEM Rio Major elimination series

The Russian team came out victorious after two intense overtime maps against the Brazilian veterans.

Cloud9 have sent Imperial packing from the IEM Rio Major after edging out narrow victories on Overpass and Vertigo, claiming revenge against the Brazilian team who had eliminated them in the Legends Stage of PGL Major Antwerp.

The victory lies in the hands of Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov, who had immense individual impact throughout the series and particularly on Vertigo, continuing his stellar form in the event so far. Sergey "Ax1Le" Rykhtorov remained curiously absent from the server and was a part of the reason Cloud9 struggled, but the team managed to take things over the line thanks to their 21-year-old AWPer.

The series was a heartbreaking end to Imperial's run in their home event, one in which they conceded 13 match points combined between the two maps that were played. Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo, Fernando "fer" Alvarenga, and Lincoln "fnx" Lau are still set to return when play reaches the arena though, hitting the stage for the showmatch as a part of a Luminosity throwback lineup.

sh1ro has been unstoppable in Rio so far, despite Cloud9's struggles

sh1ro got thing started on Overpass, scoring multi-frags en route to his team pushing up to a 5-0 lead. A response finally came in from Imperial on round six, a victory which they chained into a streak of five rounds in order to tie up the game thanks to multi-frag rounds from fer, Vinicius "VINI" Figueiredo, and Marcelo "chelo" Cespedes. The end stages of the half were firmly in control of Cloud9 though, thanks in part to Timofey "interz" Yakushin coming alive to shut down B bombsite attacks and help his team pull ahead 9-6 at the break.

The narrative of the map completely changed once Imperial were on the CT side, a triple kill from chelo in the pistol kicking off a dominant defensive performance from the Brazilian team as they surged into the lead by winning seven rounds in a row.

Cloud9 won two of their own before Imperial managed another two rounds for a 15-11 lead, but four match points were failed to be converted as Vladislav "nafany" Gorshkov's men fought their way to overtime. There, the IEM Dallas champions reigned supreme, winning four in a row to steal away the map victory.

Another imperious showing on the defense from Imperial kicked off Vertigo, with Cloud9 mustering just one round in the span of the first eleven rounds. That finally changed toward the end of the half as the Russian team clawed back four rounds to close the deficit, but they were quickly left staring down match point once again following the side swap as Imperial pushed up to a 15-6 lead following a quad kill from chelo.

sh1ro refused to allow his team to concede the map though, and stepped up massively with the AWP by shutting down Imperial round after round. He was Cloud9's saving grace, crucially denying Imperial the map win and helping recover a number of disadvantages for his team, leading the way in a nine-round spree to force overtime and ending regulation with a 35-21 K-D.

sh1ro's reign of terror continued in overtime, where he was joined by Abay "HObbit" Khassenov in closing out crucial rounds for Cloud9. Imperial fought valiantly to force a second overtime, but were unable to halt the onslaught brought on by the young Russian AWPer, ultimately conceding the map 22-19.

They should not go into retirement, they just got chelo for a lot of money from MIBR and they look like they are having the time of their lives together. Let's just hope fer and FalleN don't throw in the towel now because this team has come a long way since starting as a "last dance" meme. The sad part is that both Imperial and 00Nation could have profited from swapping boltz and cold, both could have way more impact in the opposite team.

I went to bed when it came to OT on Overpass because I knew Imperial would not manage to win it from there. Kinda sad, both they and 00 came so close only to throw away the most important rounds on CT in OT...

As a brazilian, I'm really proud of C9, especially seeing Sh1ro performing so well after the crowd yelling: "ei, sh1ro, vai tomar no cu!" This is reason (and many many more) why people hate us and I'm with them. Brazilian behaviour is a disgrace in general and I despise even more being born in this country. The only brazilian players that I actually like are Kscerato, Taco and Cold so I go a little sad seing cold that dissapointed with the results but I knew they would not stand a chance, just like this overhyped Imperial team. People usually forget that Fer and Fallen are dramaqueens (and Divas, if you will) and keep milking the old days of glory when they are washed up since the SK days. Maybe Fallen is a "good" player but is hard to forget that he destroyed several careers when his team started to underperform, blaming everything on everyone else but him. Now he poses as this almighty flawless god but in fact he is a dirty person that did dirty a lot of his former teammates so I really enjoy seeing he and Fer getting destroyed and be unable to put the blame on others because they are just bad at the game and don't have the level to compete in Tier 1 CS, hell, even in Tier 2 they would struggle. Anyway, proud of Hobbit and Sh1ro, proud everything but the brazilian crowd and brazilian teams. Let's go BIG.

Brazilian fans have always acted with offenses as in the poe example, Argentine football is the same, they offend the players' mother, they tell them to fuck themselves and take their ass, I agree with you that most of these Brazilian people are rude, maybe that's why people think that people think violent or that is fear Brazilian, the good itself, listening to football this reality... the fear of football itself this reality... also made me ashamed to send the sh1ro, total vulgarity, and unfortunately these fans think that, they are rude requests from parents But, I liked to see Imperial, they deserved to win, however, they delivered the game, maybe if there was another player in the place of "Boltz" and Vini this team would be t1, but playing well against Cloud9 shows that they are tier1, the Fallen and the only one that deserves ours, chelo is the new coldzera, I'm sad for the players, what I would like to see at Imperial was Last Dance, that would be, but the champions were divided into two teams and we oerdemos all of us.. . Faith in FURIA, that's all that's left...

Full respect to old trio of Imperial + fnx and legends like cogu, KIKO and many more. These new CS generations of Brazil are awfull, they will destroy every positive art of what legends like FalleN, cogu, bruno, fnx were making last 15-20 years for BR scene Imagine brazilian team was beaten by mongolian team in Major tournament held in Rio, Brazil infront of full crowd 🙂 Thats fact when your future depends on unsocialised instagram CS village talents like chelo, dumau, latto, hen1, kng, lucas, skullz, zevy, yuurih, art, vsm etc. you are nowhere in the process.
