FURIA eliminate NAVI to keep Major dream alive for Brazil

The hometown heroes, backed by a passionate crowd at the Jeunesse Arena, made it through to the semi-finals over the last remaining top five team in the field.

FURIA are through to the IEM Rio Major semi-final after defeating Major favorites Natus Vincere, eliminating the Ukrainian-Russian combine with wins on Ancient (16-10) and Mirage (16-10) after losing NAVI's pick, Nuke (14-16). Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato was the difference maker, the the 23-year-old amassed a 1.37 rating and 70 frags in the series.

The Major now moves into the semi-final stage, with FURIA set to play HEROIC on Saturday at 21:30 for a place in the final. Natus Vincere's exit came off the back of several poor CT sides and a lacking performance from star AWPer Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev, who ended the series at the bottom of the scoreboard with a 0.87 rating.

drop's 29 kills on Mirage got FURIA over the line

Nuke began with the home crowd erupting as FURIA won the first pistol round, but the mood in the arena soon changed after Viktor "sdy" Orudzhev won a 1vs2 clutch in the following force-buy. The early skirmish continued, with the Brazilian squad ending up 4-2 in front as Natus Vincere were forced on an eco. The Ukrainian side's individual brilliance shone through after that, Valeriy "b1t" Vakhovskiy winning a 1vs2 clutch with the AWP before s1mple and Denis "electroNic" Sharipov combined to convert a 2vs5 situation to turn the half on its head. FURIA won just one more round after that, going into their offense one round behind.

Natus Vincere won the second-half pistol round and kept the momentum they built at the end of the first half, finding themselves in a 13-8 lead after b1t stopped the lower site attack with a triple-kill. With the game slipping out of FURIA's hands, KSCERATO showed up with a triple of his own. The crowd willed FURIA on as Andrei "arT" Piovezan and company took a 14-13 lead. With their backs against the wall and armored with just pistols, Natus Vincere won an incredibly unlikely round to tie up the scores once again and break FURIA's streak, as the Ukrainian side won the last three rounds of the half to end up 16-14 winners and take a lead into the second map.

The first half of Ancient was a dominant performance by FURIA, who won the pistol and following conversion to race to a 5-0 lead. Yuri "yuurih" Santos won a 1vs3 clutch to keep the streak going before Natus Vincere finally got on the board. With the Ukrainian side slowly establishing a foothold in the game, arT's MAC10 found two entry kills, which put FURIA in a 10-3 lead. Although Natus Vincere won the final two rounds, they still went into the less-favored T side five rounds behind the Brazilians.

b1t won two 1vs1 clutches at the start of the second half to give his team some hope and force FURIA into a couple of unsuccessful force buys. After the Brazilians got their economy under control they won five in a row to reach six map points. They needed just two to close out the map 16-11 and move to the series on to the decider of Mirage.

The decider began with a couple of close wins for FURIA, the Brazilian team finding themselves 4-0 ahead. Ilya "Perfecto" Zalutskiy delivered Natus Vincere's first round with a triple-kill on the A site, and the close nature of the previous rounds meant that the FURIA economy was in tatters immediately. That enabled Natus Vincere to take control of the half, with their successful mid takes giving them ample time to feel out the map and end on the correct site. The scores were tied all through the half, with FURIA edging out a one-round advantage as they began their offense.

FURIA won another pistol to start the final half of the series, with Natus Vincere soon answering back by winning the first gun round to tie up the scores at 10-10. The Brazilian team harnessed the energy of the home crowd, as they won six rounds in a row on the offense to close out the game 16-10 and book their spot in the semi-final of their home Major.

Since the 7th may of 2017 this has been the first BO3 going to three maps where s1mple actually didn't manage to get a single 1+ rating across all three maps, and only the 6th time in his entire career, insane.

Really insane performance. Got me interested how will it look for zywoo (given that if he's bad we can hardly expect them reaching 3rd map most of the time). You can check here if you want to do it yourself: hltv.org/stats/players/matches/11893/zyw.. The answer is... 0 be it in vit or before, though he was close to not making it a few times :D

But he hasn't won a Katowice, Cologne, Major. Only made it to 3 Major Play-offs and in general hasn't performed in the play-offs of a big event. So if you're trying to argue that ZywOo is better... No

No that was not the point - I was just curious how will it look for him (I also added that for him if he doesn't perform there's even less players that can make up for him missing so when he's bad they just lose 2-0 like at this major e.g.) and I've later checked Niko too. Niko came with 3 series in his career like that (one being a 0-3 bo5). Zywoo made only 2 playoffs of a major too, not 3 even I'm not delusional :D His performances in big playoffs aren't really that bad cause he played so little of them. He was mostly meh vs Avangar at Berlin, okish vs Na'vi a Stockholm (considering what Kyojin was doing on nuke) and last one at lan was Cologne 2k19 when he was amazing and ok in final. Nowhere near s1mple so far but given time it might come - he might have the most load of a fragging of any star prolly cause so rarely anyone in his VIT years popped off to help him. So when he fails people notice it so much - Na'vi could have won yesterday with s1mple playing like that while Vit would prolly just been 2-0'd with zywoo playing like that. Vit literally only won 15.8% of maps when he is at 0 +/- or below and that's even lower than s1mple in Na'vi (17.5%)

But even if you count that, he can't compare to s1mple. Everyone seems to forget but when s1mple was in the beginning of his career, he was carrying bums to deep runs that had no business being there and he rarely dropped off, even in his first years. ZywOo is very good, but he hasn't done what s1mple has, even if you consider time and teammates. ZywOo has had probably better teammates now and done less with them. I know you aren't trying to say he's better, ZywOo just hasn't shown that he can perform like that in the big LAN games, apart from that Cologne run.

I'd say zywoo has always had mostly solid teammates in vit as far as tactics/teamwork goes but the fragging power of that team was often atrocious and even now for some reason they can't get enough of spinx/magisk (if they do this team is a lock to be top3 for 2023 IMO). For his whole time in vit there was like one event that anyone had even the same rating as him even if he was meh (apex at the very first major). He had a great support cast but if he doesn't frag so rarely anyone helps. If spinx was even the 85% of ence spinx (and magisk was more consistent) there would be no question he finally has a team to really win everything and the failures would be more on him. Spinx with 0.93 rating in the last month ain't it. Ha has a way to go but there simply wasn't enough of a help to cover his bad games - it's not strange that having electronic at his team really allowed s1mple to ascend cause he finally had someone that was reliable for his very, very rare meh games. If zywoo gets some of that with spinx we're in for a treat I'd say. Zywoo is far, far in the goat discussion simply cause of those missing playoffs and big titles but skillwise he seems like one of the only peers to s1mple other than maybe niko. Btw that Cologne was absurd how little everyone else fragged while still going into finals - nobody was even at 1 k/d other than him. That's why it seems to me that if only he had someone like electronic we'd be blessed with so many insane games vs s1mple... maybe we'll get it in coming years still :D Cheers for a discussion, have a good day

the cabins is not a bad idea, in dota they usually do in major championships, but nah in cs they need to feel the crowd no matter what the place, specially when there’s almost 18k people shouting to support a team. in quarterfinals, every team who had the crowd support didn’t lose your BO3’s. I know that in some games like fnatic x outsiders there were less people inside the arena but anyway they got the crowd buff

Not denying Furia played well. But to say that with this game Furia deserves the Major, I disagree. But that's more down to just nobody playing great CS. Maybe that changes in the coming games though.

Based on the crowd influence, tomorrow we will watch an amazing match between Furia and Heroic and my guess is that Furia will reach the final. Dealing with opposite crowd pressure is the type of trouble that athletes have to overcome in order to win a tournament. Furia is already familiarized because it's a local team. All the opponents said themselves they've never seen something like it. I see a lot of people getting pissed about the influention of the crowd, but believe me, from Rio on, the bar is raised for Counter Strike Tournaments. In other words, it's the professionalization and localization of Counter Strike.

Scrub behaviour from the crowd booing and middle finger to Navi as they walk off, just total disrespect. Yet here are the low IQ humans on HLTV dissing S1mple because he gave it right back. Brazil is such a fanatical country, it creates an incredible atmosphere, but would be good to have seen them show some respect for the opposition after their team won. S1mple played poor today but I think this is to do with mental struggles as conflict rages in his country.

Now, can you explain how Cloud 9 was challenging the crowd. They got booed and trashed the whole tournament after eliminating Imperial. No teams deserve this much hatred and disrespect towards them just because of winning a game. I would understand people cheering for other teams, but those slurs towards sh1ro and the whole c9 roster during their road to playoff and during quaters was just too much.

The fact that player booths are not used in this level of competition shows the integrity of counter-strike will never be that of any of the other top eSport events. I have not posted on this site for years, but the earlier post about player booths I felt I had to speak on, but obviously, HLTV 404'd it, because they don't like the truth being spoken. Key information on clutch rounds was undeniably swayed by the crowd, I mean just look at the facts, every team in the semi-finals was a crowd favorite, and the crowd cheered for them and give away key information. Yes, the crowd is amazing, but their bias and information-giving attitude were awful. Good teams are out because of this, anyone who says otherwise is just denying the truth.

I know you are saying that in a general lens but just for the record, there were crowds holding "They are at A" and "They are at B" in majors before. That's isn't specific to Rio. IMO the crowd moral nerf was more important than anything in the play-offs. I'm pretty sure circular arena setup affects more the players than the standard one, definitely more intimidating for the players, they probably unconsciously feel extremely vulnerable being in the center, low ground.
2022-11-12 04:25

Totally agree. Isolation booths are a must in this type of competition. Imagine you play a video game where in-game sound and communication is so important and you struggle to hear them.

Casters always pander. Like they pander to simple and zywoo in eco rounds they're gonna lose and they get a headshot. So dumb. I remember machine complaining about how people he said he was pandering on cast and he swore on cast.. unprofessional. Euros finally getting a taste what it's like for the rest of us playing away from home. Understand the game.. not just in the server but out of it. Also I competed against some Estonians on lan back in 2005 at quakecon. They were monsters (great Players.) Players were a bit rude but the manager was awesome.

Yea we did a bootcamp with them, they were watching our screens during the bootcamp.. i couldn't believe it. The LAN center we bootcamped at has all the computers in the corner of the room in an L shape. They won the competition, they were the pride of europe. We finished 5th, first Aussie team to ever go to quakecon. I was a player/captain/manager. Their manager was a cool guy though and was very helpful post competition. Always respected the estonian gamers because of that experience.. been very surprised there arent more in CSGO.

I don't know anything of THAT generation but judging from this generation we have right now some people just think too much of themselves aaand I think over time people just lose interest. I grinded hard like 5 years ago, we had this local team and we won a local lan (not cause we were good, there weren't any decent competitors and we were awful) but just after our first loss we kind of gave up on cs career. A trio of us still plays and hits like 20 hours a month and we are three times as good as we were, but just real life gets in the way. That previous generation that still considered eSports rather a hobby is so satisfying to see, cause you lived your lives and your game of passion was your side hustle (thats how I see it) and that was a magic of the scene, cause people weren't in it for money, until like the international happened.

I'm 40 now and I'll be honest... despite having 100000x more opportunities in EU to play games competitively than we have here in Australia, real life is more important. I was that generation, in it for pride, sacrificing real life, for the love of the game. I guess it maybe means Estonians are more mature, growing up faster than some others. Keep it as a hobby.. following your dreams and raising a family are more important. Continue your bloodline.. thats my advice as an old man.

The fact that the crowd is allowed to see the players’ screens and make so much noise in a game where it’s crucial is insane. It’s not like football or tennis where there is nothing to hide or listen to. Entertaining for sure, but makes the game a joke (which it is cause everyone’s cheating).

Not common for simple to crumble this much. Meanwhile heroic have best chance they ever had to win a major.

i was exited about the brazilian crowd but they are disgusting in the end. death threats, spitting and more like this are not acceptable! from now on navi will only 2-0 furia because of this. ALSO ESL PRODUCTION WITH NO SOUNDPROOF BOOTS????????????? PGL > ESL PRODUCTION!!!

PGL did not have sound proof booth, at least not in stockholm. I know it, i was there and i can even show a picture taken upp close taken from 1m away from the player's tables.

I can't understand the soundproof booths are not used in this type of competition. They are a must. Imagine you play a pro game where in-game sound and communication is so important and you struggle to hear them. So unprofessional organization. This have to be fixed!

It's funny to see ppl overreacting on the crowd thing. Lmfao actually those Teams had never experienced this before, and couldnt beat the Teams they played against, those Teams who won has been playing good and deserve the victory, If you are saying this major is the worse cuz your favorite team Lost you dont know How to lose or like CS.

Guys, you should stop crying about the crowd. As in any sports match indoors (basketball, soccer, football, baseball, etc.) the crowd supports the home team even saying bad words. This doesn't mean disrespect. It's just the way the 99 % of people do. Here in America, I always see this, and the players are mentally prepared for that. S1mple asked for that when he put his hands over his ears before the game, during map 1 and after map 1. Brazilians during this major showed their love not only for him but for a lot of international players like (cadian, zywoo, elige and even s1mple that had a very nice moment singing a brazilian song to the crowd.) Today the crowd will be against cadian, and this doesn't mean that brazilians hate him. It's just a match against a home team. Stop crying and play better!

that crowd have so many bad manners, after 1st map they spit on navi players...many middle fingers....i understand why s1mple show them middle finger at the end also i hope its last time major in brazil, wtf is this idea with portugese language with no translate? Too many technical problems, but NEVER ON FURIA PC seems like 'major is only for brazilians' cause crowd is only on furia matches do we have polish or german language on kato/cologne?
