How have M4 preferences changed following the silencer nerf?

The BLAST Premier World Final group stage showed some early evidence of a shift of trends in the M4A1-S and M4A4's usage.

It has been nearly a month since Valve released the CS:GO update that nerfed the M4A1-S, reducing its damage at range. In that time many pros, experts, as well as the community shared their thoughts on how it would affect the balance of the game and preferences when it comes to Counter-Terrorist rifles.

Just a few weeks ago, some believed the silencer would remain prevalent, some were still waiting to test out the two options more, while others like Hampus "hampus" Poser went as far as to call the M4A1-S unplayable and claim that the M4A4 was clearly the better choice. Now the BLAST Premier World Final has rolled around, the first top tournament to feature the changes, and we have finally gotten some tangible evidence showing the new trends.

The result? There has been a clear shift already.

The M4A4 has taken over as the preferred choice for the first time since the silenced version received substantial buffs to body damage in September 2021 and became the go-to weapon on the CT side. In the eight matches played during the group stage of the Abu Dhabi event, the A4 was responsible for almost 14% of all kills, while the A1-S has taken a back seat with just below 10%.

This is a result of the majority of players competing at the World Final making the switch to the M4A4. Only 13 of the 41 players in attendance have stayed completely faithful to the M4A1-S, while 22 consistently had the M4A4 in their loadout across all maps they have played so far. Players like Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski, Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken, Robin "ropz" Kool, Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, and Justin "jks" Savage have been using the A4 religiously — outside of situations in which a teammate dropped them the silencer — along with the majority of HEROIC and Vitality.

The only team not to use the M4A4 at all were Outsiders, the team who had the most time to experiment with the new update along with Vitality, as unlike the rest of the field they didn't play at the Fall Final. Likely due to the $200 lower price point and the economic advantages that come with that, AWPers have also typically stuck with the M4A1-S with the exception of Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut and Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev.

Six players — Håvard "rain" Nygaard, Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač, Emil "Magisk" Reif, s1mple, Denis "electroNic" Sharipov, and Ilya "Perfecto" Zalutskiy — dabble in both options. These are the most intriguing cases, as this could mean they think the choice is situational, dependent on what map and position they play. Another explanation could be that they are still undecided or forgot to switch their loadout, as Magisk and electroNic alternated between the two in separate matches on the same map.

rain, for example, used the A1-S on Inferno and Nuke, but he had the A4 in his loadout on Mirage, Anubis, and Ancient. The Norwegian explained his unusual preferences in an interview with HLTV: "I feel like on Nuke it's really nice to have the silencer because you can spam the cross smokes and do a lot of damage. I don't want them to notice where I am all of the time, so that's why I have it there. Same with Inferno, I can spam banana smokes without them seeing my tracers," he said. "On Ancient, it's all close range for me on B site, if you're spamming they know, so it doesn't really matter."

rain on M4s: "It's very balanced now in terms of which one is actually better"

Perhaps the most curious case is huNter-. The Bosnian star rifler played with the A1-S on Nuke and the A4 on Mirage and Ancient, but never bought either on Inferno against FaZe — instead he went with the AUG. Finn "karrigan" Andersen was the only other player who often used the scoped rifle on the CT side during the BLAST group stage, in his case on Mirage and Ancient. The AUG hasn't been a very popular weapon in recent times, dropping off in usage in mid-2020 following a series of nerfs.

The sample at the top level is still rather small, only eight teams and 21 maps in total and no top-tier data on Vertigo and Overpass, so tendencies are still likely to shift further as teams get more playtime with the changes and play more different maps. However, the early signs suggest the long reign of the M4A1-S is over.

Yeah that's the point, just try it out for a bit, like 1 or 2 months, and see the community feedback. If it's positive, let it stay in the game, if it's negative, remove it

I think its better how it is actually. Now you have to think about for which map you choose m4/m4a1, which makes the game more tactical

Yeah but if you had both options avaliable any time you can even change the rifle you're using depending on your position on the map. For example, if you're playing monster on Overpass, which is usually smoked, you can play the a1s and do spam damage without opponents being able to certainly know where you are, and if you change positions to bathrooms or banana you can play the a4 close range and do more damage. Considering everyone could do that, I feel like it'd be a great option, and it also still makes it a tactical option which rifle to use in what kind of situation

That's also a really good point, I didn't think of it. I guess we just have to wait and pray for Valve to add it

i think it should stay as it is. as the other guy said - it makes the game more tactical. you have to think about before the match which m4 you will use in which map and why. Just like rain is now using m4a1s on nuke and inferno for the reason he has stated but uses m4a4 on other maps. You now have to analyze which position on which map you will play so you have to decide which m4 you will use

But if you play spawns like in Dust II you don't really know which position will you play. Also for any casual experience I think it'd be better to have both since you can queue more than 1 map each time and don't have to worry about which one to choose before the game Either way I don't really mind what Valve decide since I suck and play only a4 to have more options to do damage

I agree this are good points, but still in my opinion its better if you have to choose one of them. And you will play the whole map with this weapon. Everything else is to OP and we get the 912541 th ct meta

Yeah that's also true, it's a very ct sided meta already, but maybe adding both m4 and buffing a little bit the galil or the economy or something like that would be balanced enough, we'll see

Thats the problem bro, CS is really complicated if you buff something or nerf something other things get really OP. The game is running fine. CSGO is out now for 10 years and the m4a1 is available for 9 years. I think if this idea would be good they had changed it years ago

I like that it has changed to more map/position dependant, the way it should be. Ideally A4 should be more useful for close combat and 1S should be more useful for longrange defensive smoke spam use. Like Nuke outside play the 1S should be favored, Vertigo ramp should still heavily favor 1S etc but Ancient, many positions on Mirage and Overpass and Inferno should be good with A4 etc. Anubis also feels like a map where it's quite strongly overall more A4-sided.

Of course it does, you can spam the smokes without revealing your position, and you have easier spray pattern on the A1-s, which makes you hit statistically more shots on long range.

Not sure what to do with that '%of kills metric'. Maybe the a4 was played more, which obviously results in more kills. With percentages so close to each other it could even mean that a1 is still better

It says in the body text, that 13/41 use a1-s. This would suggest that the a1-s were more effective, since they got a bigger kill/user... I think this article was too soon and the writer has an agenda. I use A4 myself, if it matters Edit: I didn't account for mixed users, so I am not sure how my math hold after those

The entire article is about what preferences are being shown at the moment, not what gun is actually better - there is no real statistical basis for that at the moment.

Sure, to show what gun is better we have to look a time to kill and take in account the utility of having a silencer and lower prize. But wouldn't it be better to indicate the preferences by showing the exact ratio of a1 usages and a4 usages instead of the kills performed.
2022-12-16 12:31

That doesn't necessarily have to show preference either, the A1-S is cheaper after all, so even if fewer players use it, it's going to be bought more often just by virtue of players having the money available for it more.

Yes, it's still a big factor when we ask about preference, though. I doubt teams are deliberately saving up money on a1-users to drop just in case money gets tight and if you are able to drop your teammate an a1 you most likely would've been able to drop an a4 as well. I think it's safe to say most purchases are decided by the loadout beforehand.

From the eye test, the first buyrounds that are around the $4,000 mark typically have more Famases than M4s on the people who have the A4 equipped, while the A1-S usually enters play earlier thanks to the lower price tag. I don't have the data for this, but that definitely does happen quite a lot in the early rounds especially, from tracking which players have what M4 in the loadout I saw this very commonly that players with the A4 would rather buy a Famas with more utility
2022-12-16 13:50

Also from the eye test though, the FAMAS is not a real gun :) The number of times you see players in strong positions with multi-kill potential squander the opportunity due to losing control of the spray or 5-15 HP left on the target is significant, and the FAMAS is probably a meaningful contribution in that regard. A1S has smaller mag size but substantially better controllability and still better damage in a lot of circumstances despite the increased fall-off. 95 in 5 is not unheard of with a FAMAS, and I'm not sure what range you need to be at for that to happen with an A1S but not common is what I'd expect.

The nerf was honestly dumb, only nerf needed was to add tracers to suppressed M4 or all sup guns. The TTK was good and competitive with AK and M4A4. Adding tracers would've balanced the gun fine, also Valve don't know shit about guns, suppressors don't eliminate BULLET tracers, they eliminate muzzle flash and reduce sound. So adding tracers would've for one made fucking sense and probably would've balanced it the way we wanted.

Like someone suggested it would be good to have both m4s available in buy menu, so that u could literaly buy any m4 u want. U could buy m4a1s the first buy rnd, then decide to buy m4a4 the 2nd buy rnd etc. this would change a bunch in game.

Feels like the ct rounds won are also down lol. I bet this regresses a bit early next year as people realize a1 is still pretty broken. the $200 difference is bringing out a lot of famas in gun rounds based on my observations.
