Astralis suffer early loss in RMR closed qualifier

LDLC dealt the Danish powerhouse an early blow in the second phase of qualifiers for the BLAST.tv Paris Major.

Astralis lost the opening bout of the Europe RMR closed qualifiers, falling to LDLC after a closely-contested match on Inferno. Arthur "⁠Snobling⁠" Benard and François "⁠amanek⁠" Delaunay spearheaded the French squad's upset victory, while Lukas "⁠gla1ve⁠" Rossander had a match to forget.

The Danes are now 0-1 in the Swiss group and, as the highest-seeded team of that pool, should face off against PGE Turow as the lowest-seeded team next after the Poles lost their opening match to G2.

Astralis have two lives left in the closed qualifier

While such an early loss comes as a worrying sign for Astralis, who missed out on a Major spot for the first time in the organization's history before IEM Rio in October, they still have two lives left.

Three losses in the closed qualifier mean either elimination (teams with 0-3 and 1-3 records) or a place in the Last Chance Qualifier (2-3 record). To advance directly to the next phase of the qualifying process for the Paris Major, the European RMRs, a team requires three wins in the closed qualifier.

The Swiss group is played in best-of-one matches in rounds one and two and, in part, round three, before best-of-three matches are played in qualification and elimination matches.

he doesn't know what he's doing. i think that's why hunden is there. hunden knows how to build teams. glaive doesn't. he never did. all the pieces just fell in together with sheer luck or destiny (if you believe that) with the dominant core when they were winning almost everything. once it broke up they didn't know how to fix it. kind of like being the ultimate driver, but someone else did all the maintenance and car building for you.

The sad fact is, that there aren't many significant danish talents atm. They'll come again, but atm there aren't enough available quality players in the danish scene to build the squad you are hoping for. The best danish players who aren't AWP'ers are BlameF, Stavn, Jabbi, Teses, Sjuush and Staehr. Perhaps Magisk as well. Am I forgetting anyone? Astralis already have two of the best danish players in Blame and Device. The rest of the best danish players are unattainable for Astralis. When Heroic is the powerhouse that they are atm and Sprout won't let Staehr go, it's just not possible for Astralis to build a truly competitive all danish squad. They should have moved quickly when the former CPHFlames squad was for sale. Jabbi and Roej instead of Xyp and Buzz would have been great. Astralis should be ready to pay whatever Sprout wants for Staehr, if they want to compete for real. Buzz is not going to get an infinite number of chances to prove himself, and I hope they will turn to Staehr if/when Buzz gets kicked. Whatever they think of doing with Xyp's contract, I really have no idea, but it sure as hell is not an ideal situation. And to everyone applauding and calling for Konfig... Yes, he has a high ceiling. His top level is almost unmatched by anyone outside top 5-10. Unfortunately he very rarely hits that level. Astralis needs consistency atm, and with respect to all of the good things Konfig is, consistent is not one of them, which is why you can't build a consistently winning and performing team around him. History has shown us exactly this. Flashy highlights doesn't change that.
