NAF on EG: "Liquid is light-years ahead of this organisation"

Keith "NAF" Markovic gave his frank opinion on nearly joining Evil Geniuses in 2022 in an interview with Alex "Mauisnake" Ellenberg.

NAF has been one of the most consistent North American players over the past few years. Not only was he part of the Grand Slam-winning Liquid side of 2019, to this day he still regularly performs against elite European opposition. His team has not always been so strong in recent history however, as they struggled with a roster featuring Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo and Michael "Grim" Wince in 2021.

Such were these troubles that NAF nearly joined Evil Geniuses at the end of 2021, but he ultimately chose to stick with Liquid, and the latest lineup featuring Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis and Josh "oSee" Ohm is back on an upward trajectory after a rocky start to 2023.

NAF gave a damning assessment of Evil Genuises' management

NAF sat down recently for an interview with Mauisnake to give some insight into why the team started 2023 slowly, why the 2021 lineup struggled and how oSee has helped change the tide, and what happened with his near-move to Evil Geniuses in 2022.

The interview kicked off with NAF addressing a range of historical topics, touching on the -FLY part of his tag, his approach to practice when he first started playing, his time on OpTic, and the Liquid Grand Slam win.

The discussion then moved to more recent events, starting with the Canadian providing some information as to how Liquid approached the return from the most recent player break.

"The official break would end on the 16th or 17th and we took a break all the way up until the 10th or 11th, and then played scrims for a little under a week and played BLAST," the rifler detailed.

The short preparation time would help explain Liquid's rocky showing at the BLAST Spring Groups, and he explained further by saying "we had a different mindset going into BLAST, we were like 'if we mess up here, it's not the end of the world, if we want to try new things, now is the time.' We don't want to try things at Katowice, that would be the dumbest thing ever."

Conversation then turned to oSee, and NAF provided his opinions not only on why oSee settled into Liquid well, but why the inexperienced AWPer's addition went better than that of Grim the year prior.

"When oSee first joined the team I think he was a pretty good influence, and just listening to how he would talk and the way he would bring things, he would be more confident," NAF opined. "Whereas when we picked up Grim, we said 'you're just going to play anchor roles, just listen to what people have to say.'"

Mauisnake quipped in reply "it felt like from the outside it was a shut up and don't eff this up for the rest of us," to which NAF responded "that's unfortunately how it was."

NAF went on to emphasise oSee's improvement since he joined, stating that "during the start he was more uncomfortable, he didn't have a lot of experience playing against full tier-one opponents… but as of recently he has been doing really well." He finished by saying "I think we have more oSee to see."

The final leg of the interview began with Mauisnake enquiring about NAF's rumoured potential move to Evil Geniuses at the start of 2022. Not only did the Canadian refuse to hold back as to why he turned down the transfer, but also gave a glimmer of insight as to why Liquid were so dysfunctional in 2021.

"I didn't want to play with Liquid towards the end of 2021" the rifler began. "I was having some issues with how the team was being run, how it operated at times, how some players could act sometimes.

"When I was talking to EG management… that was some of the worst management I think I have ever talked to, probably in my life," NAF continued, providing a damning assessment of the North American organisation.

"They are clearly not handling their team properly at all… I was like: Liquid is light-years ahead of this organisation and I would be an idiot to go and join this team."

To close the interview, NAF gave some thoughts as to his future in Counter-Strike, saying he holds a desire to "maybe play on a European team in the future."

"I think that would be a lot of fun," NAF mused. "You can see the inspiration with Twistzz and what he's done on FaZe, he's done a phenomenal job and I spend a lot of time talking with him… I hope one day I get to play on a top European team."

True, anyway Hunden was not the only coach who cheat. He became the scapegoat. Sure, Hunden was not helping the case with his lack of PR, but gambit was doing the same sneaky stuff (hiring his banned coach as an analyst). Basically, the guy is kinda an asshole, but he is also a mastermind. So, I understand astralis decision. They really needed a fresh mindset.

Anything to backup your claim ? I mean Team Liquid as a Org is doing great not just in CS but miltiple esports, definitely better than COL. Any Players have never said any negative thing about Liquid and in terms of Business, I mean revenve and all Liquid is doing far better then COL. So, what are these multiple reasons on the basis of which why are making this claim of COL > TL ?

I agree. I think he will look elsewhere maybe during the next year, but I doubt no one will buy him with a 2 year contract. I like NAF, he is a great player, but not many teams are paying huge buyout rn. Yekindar, last year and that's it mostly. Headtrick was probably 150K, I guess.

for jks. I doubt so. You have to consider who NAF can remplace. JKS for NAF, I doubt they will do it, specially how G2 is playing. For Faze, on t side, he replaces Ropz and same thing here. Vitality, it is a mix of Magisk and Spinx, Spinx just arrived and Magisk is still solid overall. Mouz, it is Xertion plus JDC. I doubt they will throw Xertion thought. OG is a mess, etc. I don't see where NAF is fitting at the moment.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is EG's last year in CSGO. The entire community is shitting on them right now. Either they will change something or pull out entirely.

EU orgs pay poverty salaries and treat their players like complete disposable dogshit. Fnatic, Astralis, NIP, Heroic, etc. Meanwhile Faze, Cloud9, etc. no complaints. Even Liquid has NA management 1 CEO is NA.

No because he wanted to join stewie in eg. I think it was the drama between elige, grim and stewie

NPC comment from someone mindlessly obsessed with NA. Only Stewie2k was toxic and fighting with everyonr, like a bunch of EU players like Smooya, s0mple, etc.

Me mindlessly obsessed? eh? The time zone disparity is less here for oce-na than oce-eu, but I still dunno what you're trying to imply But I was referring to the liquid drama in order to reflect what I've heard about tier 2-3 NA players. On avg, being toxic as you have said and in general, being somewhat uncooperative.

The truth of the matter is: I do not care. I do not care what the organization does, what they decide to do and what they will do. I do not care. I will still cheer for EG, even if they brought Cerq back! Now, if they sign some random tier 2-3 EU team then they will have lost a fan. But I'm fine with Tier 10 NA or Tier 1 CIS/EU

I like to cheer for a team through its ups and downs, even if they didn't have any ups... Yes, EG is terrible right now, but I always get a good chuckle or laugh when they beat Heroic or whatever and proceed to not qualify for the major. Nothing more than that. Whenever I'm watching Tier 1 CS, I will always choose some side to cheer for naturally. That's all. Though I should clarify, I don't watch EG play Tier 2-3 Tournaments or teams. Unless it's like against BNE or Eternal Fire.

+1 For example i am biggest fan of Astralis org since 2018, i am supporting them not cause name org, but cause players. I am fan of glaive, device, xyp and i was also fan of blamef when he played in col and heroic and i like this current lineup without konfig. But eg? Only Brehze left, right?

I couldn't care less about the players on the team. It's cool to have Brehze and Automatic despite them not performing at Tier 1 standards right now, but unless EG is trying to become Tier 1 or at least compete at somewhat a high level, I probably wouldn't cheer for them. I like Astralis and I always cheered for them through their hardships but it's not like they were confined to just playing at a Tier 3 EU CS level, they were expected to recover and play at the Tier 1 level and that's why I still cheered for them. So, I would probably retract that Tier 10 NA statement as I probably wouldn't find anything fascinating in watching such a game. xD

It’s NA, They are trying to become tier 1 or compete at a high level, I like seeing them go through ups and downs, I like their jerseys. Its rather that I naturally tend to be a fan of them and that such understandings of the reasons why are out of the capabilities of human thought.

I kinda like the underdogs. It’s the same reasons above still. I still cheer for col and liquid in their respective matches but I still like cheering for EG. I feel that I am an outlier.

Can understand that, i dont remember times when i was cheering for dominant team or favorites. Ok, maybe Astralis was dominant 2018-2019, but from 2021 and 2022 we see downfall and they are already good t2 team who can win in my opinion with every team with some luck and a little bit of improvements. But its no more team who can destroy everyone. Just decent team, some people cant understand that its no more old Astralis, its only about name already.

Was on a esea main team with NAF in source and was always way better of a player than he is. Way more competitive and way better of a mindset. Everytime we lost naf would threaten the team saying he was going to quit the game. Never liked him. Funny to see this huge dork thinking he's the best player around. Complete joke
