Cloud9 qualify for IEM Dallas over OG

The Russian squad became the second team to go through the European qualifier after Astralis.

Cloud9 secured their attendance at IEM Dallas 2023 after going through the European closed qualifier and finishing in second place. The Russian squad defeated OG in the consolidation final 2-0 to earn the chance to defend their title from 2022.

Vladislav "nafany" Gorshkov and company lifted the trophy at the inaugural edition of the $250,000 event last year, but were not part of the initial invites so had to make their way through the closed qualifier.

nanfany and company will get the chance to defend their title in Texas

The Russian quintet were directly invited to the online competition and defeated sYnck and Ninjas in Pyjamas on their way to the upper bracket final, where they met Astralis. In a surprising turn of events, the Danes came out victorious to secure the first qualification spot and send Cloud9 to the lower bracket.

Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov was on point in the final series against OG, especially in the opening map as he led his team to a narrow 16-14 win on Mirage thanks to his 1.84 rating and 29-8 K-D. The 21-year-old marksman slowed down on Overpass, ending the series with a 1.52 score across the two maps.

One more team is set to claim a spot at IEM Dallas from the South American qualifier taking place between April 12-13 as 00NATION, 9z, Fluxo, and INTZ battle it out for the last qualifying spot. ESL will also invite one last team based on their position in the organizer's World Ranking.

It still boggles my mind that c9 didn’t get an invitation before EG. I’m an EG black fan but for godsakes c9 LITERALLY won this event last year

i know its crazy... As champions they should get auto invite. If the champions cant have the chance to defend the title then why fight for it in the first place? Useless title if you cant defend it. Trash event.

+1, putting the reigning champions to go through qualifiers is so retarded I can't even

Yes and no? Its arguably about quality of games. Why would a maybe underperforming team get an auto invite and a team that worked 1, maybe 2 years to build a top 10 position not? Also, if a team 1 year later fell off and is absolute garbage, why waste a spot on it? I think it is a good thing they need to go through qualifiers, if anything it proves for overall better game quality.

Not the point that entry was referring to at all. But yes, EG and Nouns are garbage. Arguably liquid is too, but they seem to be able to win and lose from anyone.

kinda weird some teams were just invited like ENCE and that the team that won last edition has to qualify to it

Yeah invite system is kinda wierd. Invites were revealed on 27th February and by the time Ence (who are ESL partners) were only #16 team on esl ranking, while Fnatic, also esl partner and #10 team by the time, had to go through closed qualifier. Faze clan and mouz were invited based on esl ranking for some reason although they partners as well. Vita and Navi declined invites i assume.

instead of some potential strong team qualifying to contest for the title, we get the reigning champions having to emarassly sweat through the qualifiers to the smallest s-tier event on the scene, congrats esl
