Group stage schedule confirmed for IEM Rio

Seven of the top ten teams in the world are set to clash in Brazil.

The groups for IEM Rio have now been confirmed, as well as the schedule for the group stage of the event. 16 teams are set to do battle across two double elimination groups for the chance to fight for the lion’s share of $250,000 in the Jeunesse Arena.

Group A will host the second-highest ranked team in the event, HEROIC, and the Danes find themselves facing an intriguing matchup with 9INE in their opening match. The Poles have been on a tear so far this year, and all eyes will be focused on how they perform against elite opposition. The other side of the bracket hosts Ninjas in Pyjamas and Natus Vincere, so there is a chance that Daniil "headtr1ck" Valitov may face off against the organization he left to join the Ninjas.

Teams will battle for the chance to play in the Jeunesse Arena

The winners of ESL Pro League, FaZe, find themselves placed in Group B and reside in what many will consider the easier side of the bracket, as their highest-ranked potential opposition before the bracket finals is FURIA. Vitality and Cloud9 have also been placed in Group B, and are likely to face each other in the second round of play.

The group stage of IEM Rio will start with best-of-one opening matches, before moving to best-of-three. The winners of each group will advance directly to the semi-finals, whilst the second and third placed teams will progress to the quarter-finals. The grand final of IEM Rio will be a best-of-five.

The groups and opening matchups for IEM Rio, which kicks off April 17, are:

Group A

Denmark HEROIC vs Poland 9INE (17:15 )
Europe MOUZ vs Germany BIG (17:15 )

Russia Virtus.pro vs Europe Ninjas in Pyjamas (16:00 )
Ukraine Natus Vincere vs Mongolia The MongolZ (16:00 )

Group B

Europe FaZe vs South America 9z (19:45 )
Europe fnatic vs Brazil FURIA (19:45 )

Europe Vitality vs Europe OG (18:30 )
Russia Cloud9 vs Brazil MIBR (18:30 )

Reality: 3 Brazilian teams in the Pro League playoffs, but morally 4 teams because Imperial (The best team in the world) was giving free wins to more unfortunate teams.

I still want to know the genius that thought Rio would be the perfect choice in host a CS major in Brazil. At least go with São Paulo or Brasília.

STFU, you answered you own question " two most known cities AFTER Rio " effing clown. Thank you for confirming the core reason while most events are in Rio : it is the "most well known", most popular tourist city in Brasil, that's why Olympic Games or the Final of the soccer world cup took place there. How ironic is that, btw the way you are playing english teacher but can't even come up with a proper wording like " best-known" ... But I guess clown stoned tulip farmer is so intellectually dishonest that he can't even own his mistake. So trying hard to come up with something :D ps : I'd rather make a typo than having USA levels of geographic knowledge btw dumbo.

the fact that u bring up minute grammatical errors in english on an online website is fucking hilarious man like if u show up to a forum (an actual one where u debate not this shit) and say this i get it, but online we are just monkeys with typewriter (in the sense of the thought experiment) , and you are turning around to the one next to you and saying “you’re a real shitter for having a different model of typewriter than me”. Man in France there is Bouville, Aix-En-Provence and fucking Diagonal Du Vide, mais car jsais cette fait peut je dire q chui fr ou will u just admit ur fallacy

It's always funny to read comments from delusional people how their noob team will qualify or win.. how can they believe it? .. it's like the phrase.. "it's coming home!" all over again!! Than they loose and still say they were the best team but just unlucky haha

BIG against Heroic again in the bracket... It's so hard for teams to get a better seeding when you always play against the top top top teams. If BIG wins first game they have to play against Heroic and then in lower bracket against Navi or virtus pro....
